: Music-based intervention has been advocated as a nonpharmacologic approach for the perioperative control of pain and anxiety in surgical patients. However, its impact on patients with preoperative anxiety has not been clearly established. Our study aimed to examine the impact of music-based intervention administered before, during, and after surgery on postoperative opioid consumption and pain levels, as well as preoperative anxiety, depression, and pain catastrophizing.

Survival improvements of marine mammals in zoological institutions mirror historical advances in human longevity.

An intense public debate has fuelled governmental bans on marine mammals held in zoological institutions. The debate rests on the assumption that survival in zoological institutions has been and remains lower than in the wild, albeit the scientific evidence in support of this notion is equivocal. Here, we used statistical methods previously applied to assess historical improvements in human lifespan and data on 8864 individuals of four marine mammal species (harbour seal, ; California sea lion, ; polar bear, ; common bottlenose dolphin, ) held in zoos from 1829 to 2020.

Molecular Mechanisms Responsible for Diabetogenic Effects of COVID-19 Infection-Induction of Autoimmune Dysregulation and Metabolic Disturbances.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a significant association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and diabetes, whereby individuals with diabetes are more susceptible to severe disease and higher mortality rates. Interestingly, recent findings suggest a reciprocal relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes, wherein COVID-19 may contribute to developing new-onset diabetes and worsen existing metabolic abnormalities. This narrative review aims to shed light on the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying the diabetogenic effects of COVID-19.

Management of Glycemia during Acute Aerobic and Resistance Training in Patients with Diabetes Type 1: A Croatian Pilot Study.

(1) Background: The increased risk of developing hypoglycemia and worsening of glycemic stability during exercise is a major cause of concern for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). (2) Aim: This pilot study aimed to assess glycemic stability and hypoglycemic episodes during and after aerobic versus resistance exercises using a flash glucose monitoring system in patients with T1DM. (3) Participants and Methods: We conducted a randomized crossover prospective study including 14 adult patients with T1DM.

Understanding the Geography of Rape through the Integration of Data: Case Study of a Prolific, Mobile Serial Stranger Rapist Identified through Rape Kits.

Environmental criminological research on rape series is an understudied field due largely to deficiencies in official and publicly available data. Additionally, little is known about the spatial patterns of rapists with a large number of stranger rapes. With a unique integration and application of spatial, temporal, behavioral, forensic, investigative, and personal history data, we explore the geography of rape of a prolific, mobile serial stranger rapist identified through initiatives to address thousands of previously untested rape kits in two U.

Tunable multimodal adhesion of 3D, nanocrystalline CoFeO pollen replicas.

3D replicas of sunflower pollen microparticles, comprised of a multicomponent magnetic spinel ferrite (CoFeO) with tailorable adhesive properties, have been synthesized for the first time via a conformal layer-by-layer (LbL) surface sol-gel (SSG) deposition process followed by organic pyrolysis and oxide compound formation at a peak temperature of 600 °C-900 °C. These high-fidelity ferrite pollen replicas exhibited multimodal (van der Waals, vdW, and magnetic) adhesion that could be tuned via control of the CoFeO nanoparticle and crystal sizes. The CoFeO pollen replicas exhibited a non-monotonic change in short-range (~10 nm) vdW adhesion with an increase in the peak firing temperature, which was consistent with the counteracting effects of particle coarsening on the size and number of nanoparticles present on the sharp tips of the echini (spines) on the pollen replica surfaces.

Atypical Histiocytoid Cells in Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: An Underrecognized Cytologic Pattern.

Objectives: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of head and neck lymph nodes (LNs) is useful in diagnosing metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and most commonly shows classic cytologic features of PTC. Metastatic PTC, however, may occasionally present with a pattern unfamiliar to most pathologists: atypical histiocytoid cells (AHCs).

Methods: All PTC thyroidectomy specimens with associated FNA of LNs were retrieved from our files for 2007 to 2013.

Background And Objective: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection remains a leading cause of childhood hearing loss. Currently universal CMV screening at birth does not exist in the United States. An alternative approach could be testing infants who do not pass their newborn hearing screening (NHS) for cCMV.

Hearing Loss Detection in Schools and Early Child Care Settings: An Overview of School-Age Hearing Screening Practices.

The school nurse is the key figure in successful school screening programs. A student with unidentified and unmet health care needs is unlikely to perform at their full potential, both academically and socially. The purpose of the article is to serve as a resource, providing guidance, strategies, and a discussion of available equipment to assist with successful screening programs.

Time consumed by microscopic and nonmicroscopic tasks in image-assisted gynecologic screening: Implications for workload assessment.

Background: Gynecologic screening cytology is a complex task that includes microscopic activities and nonmicroscopic activities. The authors sought to determine the amount and percentage of time that cytotechnologists spend on those activities using the ThinPrep imaging system.

Methods: In arm 1, a total of 550 consecutive unselected slides were reviewed by 11 cytotechnologists, and the time used for individual subtasks of the screening process was recorded.

Attachment-based family therapy and emotion-focused therapy for unresolved anger: The role of productive emotional processing.

A growing body of research suggests that emotional processing is a central and common change mechanism across various types of therapies (Diener & Hilsenroth, 2009; Foa, Huppert, & Cahill, 2006; Greenberg, 2011). This study examined whether 10 weeks of attachment-based family therapy (ABFT), characterized by the use of in-session young adult-parent dialogues, were more effective than 10 weeks of individual emotion-focused therapy (EFT), characterized by the use of imaginal dialogues, in terms of facilitating productive emotional processing among a sample of 32 young adults presenting with unresolved anger toward a parent. This study also examined whether greater amounts of productive emotional processing predicted more favorable treatment outcomes.

Safety and Efficacy of Rocuronium With Sugammadex Reversal Versus Succinylcholine in Outpatient Surgery-A Multicenter, Randomized, Safety Assessor-Blinded Trial.

Complex surgical procedures are increasingly performed in an outpatient setting, with emphasis on rapid recovery and case turnover. In this study, the combination of rocuronium for neuromuscular blockade (NMB) reversed by single-dose sugammadex was compared with succinylcholine followed by spontaneous recovery in outpatient surgery. This multicenter, randomized, safety assessor-blinded study enrolled adults undergoing a short elective outpatient surgical procedure requiring NMB and tracheal intubation.

Hydration of Kr(aq) in Dilute and Concentrated Solutions.

Molecular dynamics simulations of water with both multi-Kr and single Kr atomic solutes are carried out to implement quasi-chemical theory evaluation of the hydration free energy of Kr(aq). This approach obtains free energy differences reflecting Kr-Kr interactions at higher concentrations. Those differences are negative changes in hydration free energies with increasing concentrations at constant pressure.

The increases in potassium concentrations are greater with succinylcholine than with rocuronium-sugammadex in outpatient surgery: a randomized, multicentre trial.

Background: Succinylcholine provides rapid onset of neuromuscular blockade and short duration of action, but its administration may be associated with hyperkalemia. Rocuronium is not known to increase potassium concentration, has fast onset of activity, and can be rapidly reversed by sugammadex. This study evaluated changes in plasma potassium concentrations in patients randomized either to rocuronium followed by sugammadex reversal or to succinylcholine in ambulatory surgery.

Background And Objectives: Although serious complications of otitis media (OM) such as brain abscess are rare, sequelae of OM such as tympanic membrane perforation and atelectatic tympanic membrane are quite common. Inner ear sequelae can cause hearing loss and speech and language problems. The objectives of this article are to provide a state-of-the-art review on recent articles on complications and sequelae of OM in different anatomic locations, from the tympanic membrane to intracranial sites, as well as hearing loss and speech and language development.

Chemisorption of cyanogen chloride by spinel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles.

Spinel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles, MnFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and CoFe2O4, were synthesized and used as gas-phase adsorbents for the removal of cyanogen chloride from dry air. Fixed-bed adsorption breakthrough experiments show adsorption wave behavior at the leading edge of the breakthrough curve that is not typical of physically adsorbed species. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate that CK is reacting with the spinel ferrite surface and forming a carbamate species.

Objectives: To identify and describe the findings of children who passed their newborn hearing screen (NHS) and were subsequently found to have childhood hearing loss.

Setting: Academic tertiary care center.

Design: Retrospective medical chart review.

Adsorption of sulfur dioxide by CoFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles and corresponding changes in magnetism.

Adsorption of sulfur dioxide on 10 nm CoFe(2)O(4) spinel ferrite nanoparticles was examined. Adsorption loadings of sulfur dioxide at breakthrough conditions were determined to be approximately 0.62 mol/kg, which is significant given the 150 m(2)/g surface area of the nanoparticles.

[Epidemiology and classification of diabetic foot syndrome].

The diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is an important complication of diabetes mellitus resulting in severe undesired consequences, such as amputation, disability and reduced quality of life. In Germany there are approximately 300,000 patients with lesions of the foot caused by diabetes of which approximately 50% have to be amputated within 4 years of diagnosis. To achieve a reduction of the amputation rate it is necessary to identify the main causes.

A constant entropy increase model for the selection of parallel tempering ensembles.

The present paper explores a simple approach to the question of parallel tempering temperature selection. We argue that to optimize the performance of parallel tempering it is reasonable to require that the increase in entropy between successive temperatures be uniform over the entire ensemble. An estimate of the system's heat capacity, obtained either from experiment, a preliminary simulation, or a suitable physical model, thus provides a means for generating the desired tempering ensemble.

Improved osseointegration of PTFEP-coated titanium implants.

Background: Clinical success of bone implants is critically related to the interaction between the implant surface and the surrounding tissue. The polymer poly(bis(trifluoroethoxy)phosphazene) (PTFEP) is a promising, highly biocompatible surface coating which also inhibits the adsorption of granulocytes, macrophages, inflammatory cells, bacteria, and platelets. However, there is limited clinical experience of PTFEP as a coating for bone implants.
