Background: To evaluate the benefits of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in cancer patients it is relevant to understand the adaptive immune response elicited after vaccination. Patients affected by hematologic malignancies are frequently immune-compromised and show a decreased seroconversion rate compared to other cancer patients or controls. Therefore, vaccine-induced cellular immune responses in these patients might have an important protective role and need a detailed evaluation.

In a pilot study, we studied 100 adult patients after cardiac surgery. On intensive care unit admission, we measured biomarkers in urine (midkine, IL-6, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin [NGAL], hepcidin-25) and plasma (creatinine, urea, B-type natriuretic peptide, lactate, C-reactive protein, leukocytes, IL-6, NGAL, hepcidin-25) to predict postoperative severe fluid overload.

Early after cardiac surgery, the predictive ability for AKI-RRT even of one of the most extensively evaluated novel urinary biomarkers, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), appears to be only moderate. We aimed to determine whether the NGAL/hepcidin-25 ratio (urinary concentrations of NGAL divided by that of hepcidin-25) early after surgery may compare favorably to NGAL for identification of high-risk patients after cardiac surgery.

We explored the predictive value of plasma NGAL, plasma hepcidin-25, and the plasma NGAL:hepcidin-25 ratio for major adverse kidney events (MAKE) after cardiac surgery.
Methods: We compared the predictive value of plasma NGAL, hepcidin-25, and plasma NGAL:hepcidin-25 with that of serum creatinine (Cr) and urinary output and protein for primary-endpoint MAKE (acute kidney injury [AKI] stages 2 and 3, persistent AKI >48 hours, acute dialysis, and in-hospital mortality) and secondary-endpoint AKI in 100 cardiac surgery patients at intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
A number of physiological changes are known to occur with aging, including increased fat mass, increased insulin resistance, and changes in the levels of circulating biomarkers such as lipids, growth factors, and hormones. Here, we present protocols for physiometric assessments, as well as measurements of circulating biomarkers of hormonal and growth factor function in individuals over the age range of 18-52 years. We also test for potential gender differences in the outcome measures.

Background: Anemia is the most common medical disease in the world and is an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency (ID) is the main cause for anemia and constitutes a potentially preventable condition with great impact on surgical outcome.
Introduction: Observational studies have demonstrated an association between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Cohort studies and pilot trials have suggested promising beneficial effects of vitamin D replacement in the critical ill, at least in patients with severe vitamin D deficiency. As vitamin D is a simple, low-cost and safe intervention, it has potential to improve survival in critically ill patients.

We assessed the effect of urinary biomarkers linked to suspected pathogenesis of cardiac surgery-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) on the performance of the Cleveland Score, a risk assessment model for postoperative adverse kidney events.
Methods: This pilot study included 100 patients who underwent open-heart surgery.

Preoperative anemia is independently associated with increased morbidity and mortality and represents the strongest predictor for transfusion of red blood cells. Iron deficiency anemia is the most frequent form of anemia and could easily be treated by supplementation with iron. Patient Blood Management (PBM) focusses on prevention and management of anemia to optimize the patient and reduce unnecessary allogeneic blood products.

Cell salvage is an effective method to reduce allogeneic blood transfusion. A main advantage of cell salvage is the prevention of storage-related damage to the erythrocytes.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, double-blind, multicenter, randomized trial (RIPHeart). We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 1170 patients of both genders (871 males, 299 females) from the RIPHeart-Study cohort.
Aim: To assess weather doctors' clinical risk-assessment for major adverse kidney events (MAKE) and acute kidney injury (AKI) after open-heart surgery would improve when being informed about neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) test result at ICU admission.
Patients & Methods: Clinical risk-assessment for MAKE and AKI were performed with and without providing NGAL test result and compared in an exploratory- and a validation-cohort using reclassification metrics, exemplary category-free net reclassification improvement (cfNRI).
Results: Exploratory cohort: doctors' prediction of MAKE (cfNRI = 0.
Background: Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has been suggested to protect against certain forms of organ injury after cardiac surgery. Previously, we reported the main results of RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study, a multicenter trial randomizing 1403 cardiac surgery patients receiving either RIPC or sham-RIPC.
Methods And Results: In this follow-up paper, we present 1-year follow-up of the composite primary end point and its individual components (all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke and acute renal failure), in a sub-group of patients, intraoperative myocardial dysfunction assessed by transesophageal echocardiography and the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction 5 to 7 days and 3 months after surgery.
Current pathophysiological models of schizophrenia suggest that stress contributes to the etiology and trajectory of the disorder. We investigated if allostatic load (AL), an integrative index of neuroendocrine, immune and metabolic dysregulation in response to chronic stress, is elevated in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and first-episode psychosis (FEP) and related to psychotic symptoms and social and occupational functioning. Additionally, we assessed the temporal dynamics of AL in response to treatment with second-generation antipsychotics.

Methods: Patients enrolled (N = 200), originated a German multicenter study (NCT00672334). Standard risk injury, failure, loss, and end-stage renal disease classification (RIFLE) criteria (including serum creatinine and urine output) and urinary kidney biomarker test result (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, midkine, interleukin 6, and proteinuria) were used for diagnosis of postoperative AKI.
There is evidence for insulin resistance in drug-naïve first-episode schizophrenia (Sz) patients. We have tested whether impaired insulin homeostasis is also present in first-episode patients with major depression (MD) and if this can be discerned from stress-related and medication effects. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was determined in a cross-sectional cohort study of acute first-episode drug-naïve patients with MD (n = 18) or Sz (n = 24), and healthy controls (C, n = 43).

The major complication of allo-HSCT is graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD), a progressive inflammatory illness characterized by donor immune cells attacking the organs of the recipient. Current GVHD prevention and treatment strategies use immune suppressive drugs and/or anti-T cell reagents these can lead to increased risk of infections and tumor relapse.

However, it is not known if angiogenesis has an active role during the initiation of inflammation or if it is merely a secondary effect occurring in response to stimuli by tissue-infiltrating leukocytes. Here, we show that angiogenesis precedes leukocyte infiltration in experimental models of inflammatory bowel disease and acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

Considering that cerebral disconnectivity through oligodendrocyte dysfunction has been implicated in schizophrenia, it is important to determine the effect of these drugs on oligodendrocyte energy metabolism and myelin lipid production. Effects of clozapine and haloperidol on glucose and myelin lipid metabolism were evaluated and compared in cultured OLN-93 oligodendrocytes.
