Understanding the relationship between freezing of gait and other progressive supranuclear palsy features.

Introduction: Freezing of gait (FoG) leads to falls and reduces quality of life, but little is known about FoG in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). This study aim was to identify the clinical parameters associated with FoG in PSP patients.

Methods: 349 patients meeting the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Society for PSP (NINDS-SPSP) clinical diagnostic criteria were divided into two groups: PSP with FoG (n = 159) and PSP without FoG (n = 190).

TOWARD AN OBJECTIVE METHOD TO CLASSIFY TREMOR DOMINANT AND POSTURAL INSTABILITY AND GAIT DIFFICULTY SUBTYPES OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE: A PILOT STUDY.

Discriminating the two subtypes of tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability/gait difficulty (PIGD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) at early stage is highly valuable and crucial for progression treatment of disease for caregivers. However, there is no objective method or a subtype-specific biomarker yet available for identifying these two subtypes. A computational approach in frequency domain could be a good candidate to introduce biomarker since PD tremor had frequency range of 3-7 Hz.

LOWER EXTREMITY MUSCLE FATIGUE INFLUENCES NONLINEAR VARIABILITY IN TRUNK ACCELERATIONS.

Lower extremity fatigue has been associated with decline in postural stability, alteration of normal walking patterns and increased fall risk. Effects of lower extremity fatigue on amount of movement variability as assessed by linear variability such as standard deviation and root mean square is well known but there is lack of information about how fatigue influences nonlinear temporal structure of variability in healthy human gait. In this study ten subjects (5 males and 5 females) were asked to perform treadmill walking for three minutes with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor affixed at their trunk level, thereafter the participants conducted squatting exercises and fatigue was induced as per standard fatigue protocol.

Motor Subtypes of Parkinson's Disease Can Be Identified by Frequency Component of Postural Stability.

Parkinson's disease (PD) can be divided into two subtypes based on clinical features-namely tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD). This categorization is important at the early stage of PD, since identifying the subtypes can help to predict the clinical progression of the disease. Accordingly, correctly diagnosing subtypes is critical in initiating appropriate early interventions and tracking the progression of the disease.

Towards Real-Time Detection of Freezing of Gait Using Wavelet Transform on Wireless Accelerometer Data.

Injuries associated with fall incidences continue to pose a significant burden to persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) both in terms of human suffering and economic loss. Freezing of gait (FOG), which is one of the symptoms of PD, is a common cause of falls in this population. Although a significant amount of work has been performed to characterize/detect FOG using both qualitative and quantitative methods, there remains paucity of data regarding real-time detection of FOG, such as the requirements for minimum sensor nodes, sensor placement locations, and appropriate sampling period and update time.
