Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney: A case report.

Introduction: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is rare, representing 2% of all soft tissue tumors and is usually described in the thoracic cavity. Only 105 cases of renal SFT have been reported.

Case Presentation: A 55-year-old men with lower urinary tract symptoms, had a routine renal ultrasound which showed a cortical mass of the left kidney measuring 36 × 23 × 39 mm, with peripheral enhancement, and a central fluid collection on CT.

Building Immigration-Informed, Cross-Sector Coalitions: Findings from the Los Angeles County Health Equity for Immigrants Summit.

In December 2017, the Los Angeles County Office of Immigrant Affairs and Board of Supervisors, alongside local health care and legal providers, convened the Health Equity for Immigrants and Families Summit to advance a vision for immigrant health. We describe the four critical concepts identified by stakeholders to address the varied needs of immigrants in an increasingly anti-immigrant political environment: (1) Recognizing immigration status as a modifiable social determinant of health; (2) Adopting the concept of "Immigration-Informed Care" within health care institutions; (3) Establishing immigration-focused medical-legal partnerships; and (4) Building coordinated systems based on knowledge of local stakeholders, policies, and funding mechanisms.

Fluorescence-enabled assessment of adrenal gland localization and perfusion in posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenal surgery in a preclinical model.

Background: The posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenal access represents a challenge in orientation and working space creation. The aim of this experimental acute study was to evaluate the impact of computer-assisted quantitative fluorescence imaging on adrenal gland identification and assessment of intraoperative remnant perfusion for adrenal resection in the posterior retroperitoneoscopic approach.

Methods: Six pigs underwent simultaneous (n = 5) or sequential (n = 1) bilateral posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (n = 12).

Hybrid fluorescent magnetic gastrojejunostomy: an experimental feasibility study in the porcine model and human cadaver.

Background: Laparoscopic gastrojejunostomies are time consuming and require a specific training. Alternatively, sutureless anastomosis can be achieved using endoscopically delivered magnetic rings. Our aim was to assess the feasibility and reproducibility of an endo-laparoscopic gastrojejunostomy technique, using a pair of magnets coated with a near-infrared fluorescent biocompatible polymeric material.

Inguinal Solitary Fibrous Tumor: A Case Report.

Introduction: A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that may occur in a wide range of sites, more commonly in the pleura. We report a well-documented case of an SFT with malignant histology arising in the inguinal region.

Case Presentation: A 59-year-old man, with an unremarkable medical history, presented with a slow-growing painless mass in the left side of the inguinal region, which he had ignored for 3 years.

HYPerspectral Enhanced Reality (HYPER): a physiology-based surgical guidance tool.

Background: HSI is an optical technology allowing for a real-time, contrast-free snapshot of physiological tissue properties, including oxygenation. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has the potential to quantify the gastrointestinal perfusion intraoperatively. This experimental study evaluates the accuracy of HSI, in order to quantify bowel perfusion, and to obtain a superposition of the hyperspectral information onto real-time images.

1,1-Dimethyl-3-phenylurea (known as fenuron) which is a phenyl urea-based widely used herbicide exhibits interesting structural and conformational properties and a notable biological activity. A detailed analysis on the vibrational, molecular and electronic characteristics of fenuron has been carried out. Potential energy scans (PESs) performed at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory predicted two possible minima corresponding to the optimized anti and synforms resulting from the internal rotation about the N-C bond.

Platelet Selenium Indices as Useful Diagnostic Surrogate for Assessment of Selenium Status in Lambs: an Experimental Comparative Study on the Efficacy of Sodium Selenite vs. Selenium Nanoparticles.

Unlike in human medicine, information on the platelet selenium (Se) concentration and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, as potential biomarkers of Se status, is lacking in the field of veterinary medicine. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of sodium selenite (SeS) and Se nanoparticles (SeN) on platelet Se indices, and compare the results with those of conventional indices of Se status in sheep. An adrenal cystic lymphangioma: A case report of a rare tumor.

Cystic lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor developing from lymphatic endothelial cells, and is usually described in the neck or axilla. We report a new case of an adrenal cystic lymphangioma fortuitously found in a 37-year-old patient. This case report and review of the literature bring new insights into the diagnostic difficulty and management of cystic lymphangioma of the adrenal gland.

Resolving the basal divisions in the stylommatophoran land snails and slugs with special emphasis on the position of the Scolodontidae.

The deep divisions at the base of the stylommatophoran land snails and slugs have proved to be controversial, with the phylogenetic position of the Scolodontidae remaining unresolved. Here we present a phylogenetic analysis of 34 stylommatophoran genera based on a combined dataset (5782 sites) of four loci with the aim of resolving the position of the Scolodontidae and their relationship to the 'achatinoid' and 'non-achatinoid' clades. We also evaluate the phylogenetic utility of different genes and gene partitions.

Principal components analysis of Raman spectral data for screening of Hepatitis C infection.

In the current study, Raman spectroscopy is employed for the identification of the biochemical changes taking place during the development of Hepatitis C. The Raman spectral data acquired from the human blood plasma samples of infected and healthy individuals is analysed by Principal Components Analysis and the Raman spectral markers of the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection are identified. Spectral changes include those associated with nucleic acidsat720 cm, 1077 cm 1678 (CO stretching mode of dGTP of RNA), 1778 cm (RNA), with proteins at 1641 cm(amide-I), 1721 cm(CC stretching of proteins) and lipids at 1738 cm(CO of ester group in lipids).

Ankylosing spondylitis: analysis of gene-gene interactions between β, , and in Han Chinese and Algerian cohorts.

Introduction: Association studies have recently identified the importance of new genetic variants for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in several populations. Our aim was to confirm associations of variants within genes involved in the IL-23 signalling pathway with AS in two ethnically different populations: Han Chinese and Algerian.

Material And Methods: Two case-control studies were performed in separate cohorts: Han Chinese (430 AS patients and 580 controls) and Algerian (130 AS patients and 120 controls).

Droplet flow-assisted heterogeneous electro-Fenton reactor for degradation of beta-blockers: response surface optimization, and mechanism elucidation.

In this study, we report an effective degradation method for trace level beta-blockers (propranolol and acebutolol) in hospital wastewater using a new droplet flow-assisted heterogeneous electro-Fenton reactor (DFEF) system. Biogenic iron-carbon nanocomposites (RHS/C-x% Fe) as eco-friendly and low-cost heterogeneous Fenton catalysts were synthesized from rice husk via hydrolytic sol-gel routes. Here, we demonstrate the use of natural air as a nebulizing agent for fast and continuous catholyte air saturation and Fenton catalyst transfer to the cathode electrode.

Deciphering the Enzymatic Function of the Bovine Enteric Infection-Related Protein YfeJ from Salmonella enterica Serotype Typhimurium.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella can colonize the gastrointestinal system of cattle and can also cause significant food-borne disease in humans. The use of a library of single-gene deletions in Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium allowed identification of several proteins that are under selection in the intestine of cattle. STM2437 ( yfeJ) encodes one of these proteins, and it is currently annotated as a type I glutamine amidotransferase.

Should Immigration Status Information Be Included in a Patient's Health Record?

The documentation of immigration status in patient records poses a challenge to clinicians. On one hand, recording this social determinant of health can facilitate continuity of care and improved communication among clinicians. On the other, it might expose patients or their family members to immediate and unforeseen risks, such as being stigmatized and discriminated against by nonimmigrant-friendly clinicians or being exposed to immigration enforcement if staff contact immigration officials in violation of patient confidentiality.

A selective detection approach for copper(ii) ions using a hydrazone-based colorimetric sensor: spectroscopic and DFT study.

The development of an efficient and miniaturized analytical approach to determine trace levels of toxic ions in aqueous fluids presents a current research challenge. Hydrazone-based chemosensors are considered potential candidates due to their high sensitivity and selectivity towards heavy metal ions. Computational techniques can be properly implemented to elucidate possible modes of ligand-metal interaction and provide an in-depth understanding of the chemistry involved.

Juvenile segmental progeroid syndromes are rare, heterogeneous disorders characterized by signs of premature aging affecting more than one tissue or organ starting in childhood. Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), caused by a recurrent de novo synonymous LMNA mutation resulting in aberrant splicing and generation of a mutant product called progerin, is a prototypical example of such disorders. Here, we performed a joint collaborative study using massively parallel sequencing and targeted Sanger sequencing, aimed at delineating the underlying genetic cause of 14 previously undiagnosed, clinically heterogeneous, non-LMNA-associated juvenile progeroid patients.

Introduction: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) is a particular form of chronic renal suppuration characterized by the destruction of renal parenchyma and its replacement by a granulomatous tissue containing xanthomatous cells.

Objective: To report and describe the main clinical, biological, radiological and therapeutic aspects of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in adults in focal and diffuse forms.

Methods: This was a monocentric retrospective study involving 42 cases of XGPN operated and histologically confirmed between 2005 and 2015.

Background: Arterial blood supply deficiency and venous congestion both play a role in anastomotic complications. Our aim was to evaluate a software-based analysis of the fluorescence signal to recognize the patterns of bowel ischemia.

Methods: In 18 pigs, two clips were applied on the inferior mesenteric artery (group A: n = 6) or vein (group V: n = 6) or on both (group A-V: n = 6).

A survey of Dictyocaulus arnfieldi (Nematoda) infections in equids in Urmia region, Iran.

Dictyocaulus arnfieldi is a lungworm commonly found in equids; however, relatively little is known about it. The aim of the present study was to establish the prevalence of equine lungworms in naturally-infected working and sporting horses, donkeys and mules in rural areas of Urmia, northwest Iran. The fecal samples were collected from 299 working horses, 57 sporting horses, 66 donkeys and 37 mules during the period March 2014 to June 2016.

Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on atrial fibrillation ablation in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Background: The role of catheter ablation (CA) is increasingly recognized as a reasonable therapeutic option in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF).

Hypothesis: We aimed to compare CA to medical therapy in AF patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods: We searched the literature for randomized clinical trials comparing CA to medical therapy in this population.
