Patau Syndrome (PS), characterized as a lethal disease, allows less than 15% survival over the first year of life. Most deaths owe to brain and heart disorders, more so due to septal defects because of altered gene regulations. We ascertained the cytogenetic basis of PS first, followed by molecular analysis and docking studies.

We report 2 extreme preterm neonates who developed cardiac tamponade secondary to perforation of the myocardium by the percutaneous silastic central venous catheters, which were inserted for parental nutrition. Percutaneous pericardiocentesis was performed and pericardial effusion was aspirated, later proved by analysis to be total parental nutrition. The lines were removed and the patients successfully resuscitated and survived, both were sent home in good condition.

Urinary bladder perforation due to bladder catheterization in neonates is a rare iatrogenic complication. It has been reported secondary to various causes and a variety of surgical settings in neonates. A case of urinary bladder perforation due to catheterization in a premature baby with Down syndrome, who presented with progressive renal failure and mild-to-moderate ascites, is reported.

Objective: To determine whether a rebound in serum bilirubin level occurs within 24 hours after discontinuation of phototherapy in term infants with hyperbilirubinemia.

Methods: A retrospective medical record review of term infants with hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy who were admitted over 24 months, June 1999 to December 2001, at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was completed. Total serum bilirubin levels (TSB) at and up to 24 hours after termination of phototherapy (follow-up levels) were recorded.
