Article Synopsis
  • Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) are a significant health risk after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), and cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) is a contributing factor to MACE in these patients.
  • A study involving 131 adult patients who underwent OLT found that those who had ascites and hepatorenal syndrome, along with those meeting the 2005 CCM criteria, were more likely to experience MACE within a year.
  • The 2005 CCM criteria were better predictors of MACE and showed a 34% reversibility post-OLT, while the newer 2019 criteria were less effective and only showed a 57% reversibility rate among fewer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) is prevalent among patients with cirrhosis facing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) evaluation, and traditional stress echocardiograms can miss it.
  • This study involved 88 patients with obstructive CAD and 97 without, using stress echo, CT scans, and cardiac catheterization to evaluate the role of vascular and valvular calcification in detecting CAD.
  • The combination of calcification data from CT and echo with stress echo significantly enhanced CAD detection accuracy (area under the curve improved from 0.58 to 0.73), especially when considering age, gender, and diabetes history (further increased to 0.80).

Objective: To examine the relationship between psychosocial strengths (resilience, self-efficacy beliefs and social support) and perceived severity of COVID-19 and also to gauge the mediating role of self-control among frontline health care professionals of Pakistan.

Methods: A cross-sectional research design was utilized from March to April 2020 from one medical teaching hospital of South Punjab. As it was a single center experience so all the doctors were approached and asked to participate in this research.

Background: Metoclopramide is mainly metabolized by CYP2D6, CYP3A4, CYP2C19, and CYP1A2 enzymes, while cilostazol is also metabolized by CYP3A4, CYP2C19, and CYP1A2 enzymes.

Aim: This study evaluates the effect of cilostazol on the pharmacokinetics of oral metoclopramide.

Methods: This was a randomized, two-phase cross-over pharmacokinetic study separated by a 4-week wash-out time period, 12 healthy non-smoking volunteers received metoclopramide 20 mg as a single oral dose and after 4 weeks, cilostazol 100 mg twice daily for 4 days then with metoclopramide 20 mg on test day.

The present research is focused on cultivation of microalgae strain Chlorella vulgaris for bio-fixation of CO2 coupled with biomass production. In this regard, a single semi-batch vertical tubular photobioreactor and four similar photobioreactors in series have been employed. The concentration of CO2 in the feed stream was varied from 2 to 12 % (v/v) by adjusting CO2 to air ratio.

This communication reports an experimental investigation of integrated CO2 bio-conversion, wastewater treatment, and biomass production by microalgae cultivation. In this regard, the effects of CO2 concentrations on mixotrophic growth kinetics of a microalgae strain (Nannochloropsis oculata) are conducted in a semi-batch photobioreactor. The concentration of CO2 in the feed stream is varied from 4 to 12 mol% by adjusting CO2-to-air ratio.

The oxidative thermal characteristics of two microalgae species biomass Nannochloropsis oculta and Chlorella vulgaris have been investigated. The apparent kinetic parameters for the microalgal biomass oxidation process are estimated by fitting the experimental data to the nth order rate model. Also, the iso-conversional methods Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) were used to evaluate the apparent activation energy.

The in vitro apatite-forming ability of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (70 wt %)-silica sol-gels, with hydroxyl and triethoxysilane end-groups with potential use in bone repair have been assessed using static and dynamic osteoconductivity tests. Diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and microanalysis techniques were used to observe and characterize precipitates formed on the material's surface. An apatite layer was observed to form on both of the composites' surface.
