Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are highly attractive as energy-storage systems owing to their inherent safety, low cost, and simple assembly processes. However, the growth of Zn dendrites and side reactions at the Zn metal anode significantly degrade their electrochemical performance. To address these challenges, this study introduces a surface modification that increases the lifespan and cycling stability of AZIBs by constructing an artificial zinc sulfide (ZnS) protective layer on the Zn anode.

Article Synopsis
  • * Despite having several other health issues, the patient successfully underwent a laparoscopic radical resection of his rectal cancer, with no complications during surgery.
  • * Follow-up over 24 months showed no recurrence of cancer, suggesting that careful surgical planning can lead to effective treatment even in complex cases like this one.

Potatoes are typically seeded as tubers, and their slow sprouting significantly impacts production. Therefore, the effects of polyacrylamide (20 g·L, 30 g·L, and 40 g·L) as a seed potato dressing on sprouting, seedling growth, and biomass were investigated. The phytohormone content, respiratory intensity, and starch metabolism enzyme activity were analyzed to elucidate the physiological mechanisms involved.

Objective: To report the long-term data of the Triple procedure (medialization laryngoplasty, adduction arytenopexy, and cricothyroid subluxation) regarding complications and revisions in a large cohort of patients.

Study Design: Retrospective case series.

Methods: This study included patients who underwent ≥1 components of the Triple procedure between January 2000 and July 2019.

Pain control after off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (OPCAB) facilitates mobilization and improves outcomes. The efficacy of the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) after cardiac surgery remains controversial. We aimed to investigate the analgesic effects of ESPB after OPCAB.

Background: An increase in the frequency of surgeries among older individuals is observed in some countries. Hypotension is common and exaggerated in older patients and can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Total intravenous anesthesia is commonly administered with propofol, while remimazolam has been suggested as an alternative to propofol because of advantages such as a more stable hemodynamic profile and less respiratory suppression.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of anaerobic blood culture in pediatric patients by comparing the detection rate and distribution of bacteria between aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 11,664 blood cultures obtained from children under the age of 14 between January 2013 and June 2020. The positive rate of total, aerobic, and anaerobic blood culture, as well as the species distribution of each blood culture bottle, were investigated.

Purpose: Comminuted inferior patellar pole fractures are challenging injuries and require adequate treatment due to the extension mechanism of the knee.

Methods: A modified separate vertical fixation by wires and Titanium cables was established according to a finite element biomechanical study. Between September 2018 and May 2021, 18 patients with inferior pole fractures of the patella were retrospectively enrolled in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on developing a fast and accurate screening test for urinary tract infections (UTIs) using the UF-5000, with the goal of improving diagnosis and reducing the time taken for test results.
  • - Researchers analyzed 1,063 urine samples and found that a BACT count above 685.3/µL provided the best diagnostic accuracy, boasting 93.8% sensitivity and 90.2% specificity for UTI detection.
  • - The findings suggest that using both the BACT count and the BACT-Info flag together enhances UTI diagnosis, particularly for Gram-negative bacteria, making it beneficial for guiding empirical treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) strains in Korea after the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), focusing on serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Among the 411 isolates tested, serotype 3 was the most common, with notable antimicrobial resistance rates, especially for erythromycin (80.3%) and penicillin (13.1%).
  • The findings highlight an increase in non-PCV13 serotypes and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, indicating a need for ongoing monitoring to effectively manage and treat infections.

Background: Chronic inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of frailty and loss of physical performance, which are closely associated with sarcopenia. In women, the decline in muscle mass and strength is accelerated after menopause. Thus, we examined the association between high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and relative handgrip strength (HGS) in postmenopausal women.

Background: The autogenous iliac bone graft is the first choice of surgical treatment for long bone non-union. However, many factors limit the use of autogenous bone, such as insufficient bone harvest and complications in the donor site. This study aimed to pilot-test the effectiveness of the cortical allograft strut augmented with Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on long bone non-union in the lower limb.

Background: Impaired wound healing is one of the most noteworthy features and troublesome complications of diabetes mellitus, which arouses a rising global health concern without potent remedies. Thrombin is the major hemostatic agent applied at wound healing initiation and recently gained therapeutic credits in later phases. However, a rare investigation achieved prolonged use of thrombin and probed the detailed mechanism.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is an important pathogen causing neonatal early-onset disease. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of BD Max GBS assay (Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) without enrichment (direct BDM) for detecting GBS using vaginal and rectal specimens in comparison with culture. In total, 716 specimens collected from 358 pregnant women between June 2018 and May 2020 were included in this study.
