[Managing the basic health unit in tuberculosis control: a field of challenges].

In this study we analyzed the management of Basic Health Units in terms of Tuberculosis (TB) control in a city in the interior of São Paulo state. Fourteen managers participated in the study. A closed questionnaire was administered and an open question was also applied.

Irreversible blindness in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus.

Blindness caused by severe vasculitis or uveitis is rare in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) patients. In a 27-year period, 5367 patients were followed at our Paediatric Rheumatology Division and 263 (4.9%) patients had JSLE (American College of Rheumatology criteria).

Heat stress impairs performance parameters, induces intestinal injury, and decreases macrophage activity in broiler chickens.

Studies on environmental consequences of stress on animal production have grown substantially in the last few years for economic and animal welfare reasons. Physiological, hormonal, and immunological deficits as well as increases in animals' susceptibility to diseases have been reported after different stressors in broiler chickens. The aim of the current experiment is to describe the effects of 2 different heat stressors (31 +/- 1 and 36 +/- 1 degrees C/10 h per d) applied to broiler chickens from d 35 to 42 of life on the corticosterone serum levels, performance parameters, intestinal histology, and peritoneal macrophage activity, correlating and discussing the obtained data under a neuroimmune perspective.

Effects of ghrelin, GH-releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6) and GHRH on GH, ACTH and cortisol release in hyperthyroidism before and after treatment.

In thyrotoxicosis GH responses to stimuli are diminished and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is hyperactive. There are no data on ghrelin or GHRP-6-induced GH, ACTH and cortisol release in treated hyperthyroidism. We, therefore, evaluated these responses in 10 thyrotoxic patients before treatment and in 7 of them after treatment.

Maternal and developmental toxicity of ayahuasca in Wistar rats.

Introduction: Ayahuasca is a psychotropic plant beverage initially used by shamans throughout the Amazon region during traditional religious cult. In recent years, ayahuasca has also been used in ceremonies of a number of modern syncretic religious groups, including pregnant women. However, no documented study has been performed to evaluate the risk of developmental toxicity of ayahuasca.

Histologic and immunohistochemical evaluation of intestinal innervation in dogs with and without intussusception.

Objective: To assess viability of innervation in bowel segments appearing macroscopically viable from dogs with intussusception.

Animals: 7 dogs without gastrointestinal dysfunction that had been euthanized for reasons unrelated to the study (control dogs) and 13 dogs with intussusception that underwent enterectomy and intestinal anastomosis (affected dogs).

Procedures: A total of 31 samples of intestinal tissue were obtained from the control dogs; 28 samples were obtained from affected dogs during surgery.

Occurrence and composition of class 1 and class 2 integrons in clinical and environmental O1 and non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae strains from the Brazilian Amazon.

This study identified and characterised class 1 and 2 integrons in clinical and environmental Vibrio cholerae O1 and non-O1/non-O139 strains isolated from the Brazilian Amazon. The aadA2 and aadA7 gene cassettes were found in class 1 integrons in two genotypes of environmental V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139.

Effects of ghrelin, growth hormone-releasing peptide-6, and growth hormone-releasing hormone on growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and cortisol release in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), growth hormone (GH) responses to provocative stimuli are normal or exaggerated, whereas the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis has been less studied. Ghrelin is a GH secretagogue that also increases adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels, similarly to GH-releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6). Ghrelin's effects in patients with T1DM have not been evaluated.

Changes in bone mass, biomechanical properties, and microarchitecture of calcium- and iron-deficient rats fed diets supplemented with inulin-type fructans.

Feeding mineral-deficient diets enhances absorptive efficiency as an attempt of the body to compensate for the lack of an essential nutrient. Under certain circumstances, it does not succeed; and nutritional deficiency is produced. Our hypothesis was that inulin-type fructans (ITF), which are known to affect mineral absorption, could increase Ca and Fe bioavailability in Ca- and Fe-deficient rats.

Radiometric survey of teletherapy treatment rooms in Brazil.

The Brazilian national regulatory authority, National Commission of Nuclear Energy, requires that dose rates in the vicinity of teletherapy treatment rooms do not exceed the permissible limits for workers as well as members of the public, depending on the place considered. At the end of 2005, the Brazilian national regulatory authority reduced the permissible dose limit for controlled areas from 1000 to 400 microSv week(-1). Therefore, the aim of this work is to verify the adequacy of structural shielding to this new limit for telecobalt units that had their sources changed and clinic linear accelerators (ALs) installed before the end of 2005.

The effects of the Brazilian regulatory inspection programme on nuclear medicine facilities.

This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of the regulatory inspections carried out by the Brazilian regulatory body in the area of nuclear medicine. The main aspects observed during the inspections are presented as well as the time evolution of the non-compliances, according to their occurrence by type. We also evaluate factors concerning the working of the nuclear medicine facility responsible for solving the non-compliances.

Conventional ventricular stimulation effects on patients with normal ventricular function.

Background: The stimulation of the right ventricle (RV) may be deleterious in patients with ventricular dysfunction; however there is little evidence about the impact of this stimulation in patients with normal ventricular function.

Objectives: To assess the clinical and laboratory evolution of patients with normal ventricular function submitted to implant of artificial cardiac pacemaker (PM).

Methods: 16 patients enrolled according to the following inclusion criteria: normal ventricular function defined by echocardiogram and presence of upper ventricular stimulation > 90% (generator telemetry assessment) submitted to a PM implant were prospectively studied.

Partial restoration of GH responsiveness to ghrelin in Cushing's disease after 6 months of ketoconazole treatment: comparison with GHRP-6 and GHRH.

Objective: In Cushing's disease (CD), GH responsiveness to several stimuli, including ghrelin, GHRP-6, and GHRH, is blunted. Recovery of GH secretion after remission of hypercortisolism after transsphenoidal surgery, radiotherapy, or adrenalectomy is controversial. There are no studies evaluating the effect of primary clinical treatment with ketoconazole on GH secretion in CD.

[The concepts of bonding and the relation with tuberculosis control].

This study analyzed the concepts of bonding that guide the practice of Family Health Program (FHP) teams in terms of tuberculosis (TB) control measures in the public health setting, in the city of Bayeux, Paraiba, Brazil. Using a qualitative approach, the study involved 37 health care professionals. Data collection took place using the focal group technique, in April 2007.

Mathematical modelling of hydrogen sulphide emission and removal in aerobic biofilters comprising chemical oxidation.

Four different empirical expressions have been compared for estimating the removal of hydrogen sulphide (H(2)S) from wastewater by chemical oxidation during its treatment in an aerated biofilter. The relative importance of this removal process is considered in a mass balance proposed by an emission model. Two of the four models investigated were able to predict the mean H(2)S removed fraction within a confidence interval of 95% and they demonstrated good agreement with experimental data.

Low doses of monocrotaline in rats cause diminished bone marrow cellularity and compromised nitric oxide production by peritoneal macrophages.

Monocrotaline (MCT) is a pyrrolizidine alkaloid found in a variety of plants. The main symptoms of MCT toxicosis in livestock are related to hepato- and nephrotoxicity; in rodents and humans, the induction of a pulmonary hypertensive state that progresses to cor pulmonale has received much attention. Although studies have shown that MCT can cause effects on cellular functions that would be critical to those of lymphocytes/macrophages during a normal immune response, no immunotoxicological study on MCT have yet to ever be performed.

Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) responsiveness to ghrelin increases after 6 months of ketoconazole use in patients with Cushing's disease: comparison with GH-releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6).

Background: In Cushing's disease (CD), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)/cortisol responses to growth hormone secretagogues (GHS), such as ghrelin and GHRP-6, are exaggerated. The effect of clinical treatment of hypercortisolism with ketoconazole on ACTH secretion in CD is controversial. There are no studies evaluating ACTH/cortisol responses to GHS after prolonged ketoconazole use in these patients.

Solid-state experimental and theoretical investigation of the ammonium salt of croconate violet, a pseudo-oxocarbon ion.

The present work describes the crystal structure, vibrational spectra, and theoretical calculations of ammonium salts of 3,5-bis-(dicyanomethylene)cyclopentane-1,2,4-trionate, (NH(4))(2)(C(11)N(4)O(3)) [(NH(4))(2)CV], also known as ammonium croconate violet. This compound crystallizes in triclinic P1 and contains two water molecules per unit formula. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds involving water molecules and ammonium cations, giving rise to a 3D polymeric arrangement.

[The information system and tuberculosis control on prioritary cities of Paraiba - Brazil].

This article had the purpose to understand the perception of the coordinators of the Tuberculosis Control Program regarding the use of the Notification Aggravation Information System - Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN) as an instrument of the DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment) Strategy. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews, with eight coordinators of the Tuberculosis Control Program in six cities of the state of Paraiba. The results showed that the cities use the SINAN to evaluate actions to control tuberculosis, pointing to difficulties such as failure to fill out the tuberculosis notification sheets, precarious computer infrastructure, insufficient qualification of human resources, lack of integration between professionals from different sectors and deficiencies in the information flow between healthcare units and cities.

Bullying, burnout, and mental health amongst Portuguese nurses.

Bullying is a concept commonly used to describe situations in which an individual is persistently treated in an abusive manner over a period of time, with a feeling of not being able to counterattack or defend him-or herself against the abuse. In this study we investigated both the prevalence of bullying in Portuguese nurses and the relationship between the symptoms of burnout and mental health in nurses who report being bullied. Participants were 107 nurses of the Portuguese Public Health System.

Subclinical encephalopathy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Background: Clinical and experimental evidence suggests that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with a variety of mental symptoms that range from cognitive slowing to mental confusion and dementia.

Purpose: To test the hypothesis that COPD leads to cognitive impairment in the absence of acute confusion or dementia.

Method: The global cognitive status of 30 patients with COPD without dementia or acute confusion and 34 controls was assessed with a Brazilian version of the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE).
