Sustained Maternal Smoking Triggers Endothelial-Mediated Oxidative Stress in the Umbilical Cord Vessels, Resulting in Vascular Dysfunction.

Nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability is fundamental in the regulation of redox balance and functionality of the endothelium, especially in the case of the umbilical cord (UC), which has no innervation. The analysis of UC vessel-related complications could serve as a useful tool in the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to neonatal cardiovascular disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the mechanisms that rule the severity of prenatal endothelial dysfunction, induced by the long-term effect of maternal smoking.

The scientific literature of coronavirus-disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly expanding. There is a growing evidence on the discrepancy between clinical symptoms and radiologic findings in many patients. This case report gives details about a patient with only mild symptoms but relatively severe radiological findings.

Ketamine decreases cell viability of bone explants and impairs bone healing in rats.

Background: Ketamine is a widely used anesthetic in experimental medicine. We have also used ketamine for surgical interventions and imaging in rats and found significantly impaired ossification between identically performed experiments, which only differed in the number of anesthetic events. In order to investigate this phenomenon, we estimated the absorbed ionizing radiation and also studied whether ketamine administration has disadvantageous effect on bone cell viability.

SPACE DOSIMETRY MEASUREMENTS IN THE STRATOSPHERE USING DIFFERENT ACTIVE AND PASSIVE DOSIMETRY SYSTEMS.

Several measurements have been performed on the cosmic radiation field from the surface of the Earth up to the maximum altitudes of research aeroplanes. However, there is only limited information about that between 15 and 30 km altitudes. In order to study the radiation environment in the stratosphere, an experiment was built by students from Hungarian universities that flew on board the BEXUS (Balloon Experiments for University Students) stratospheric balloon in Northern Sweden, from the ESRANGE Space Center.

CALIBRATION OF A WHOLE BODY COUNTER FOR 241Am WITH THE LLNL CHEST PHANTOM.

An occupational incorporation event occurred at the Radioactive Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility in December 2013 at Püspökszilágy, Hungary. Internal contamination due to (241)Am was discovered by a regular routine whole body counting measurement at the Centre for Energy Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. After that, a whole body counter was calibrated for an organ counting geometry.

Impact of the insulin and glucose content of the postoperative fluid on the outcome after pediatric cardiac surgery.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the insulin and glucose content of the maintenance fluid in influencing the outcomes of pediatric patients undergoing heart surgery.

Methods: A total of 2063 consecutive pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery were screened between 2003 and 2008. A dextrose and an insulin propensity-matched group were constructed.

Unexpected Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in an adult presenting with intermittent upper intestinal obstruction. A case report.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disease, belonging to the hamartomatous polyposis syndromes. It is characterized by multiple hamartomatous polyps of the gastrointestinal tract associated with oral and anal mucocutaneous pigmentations. We report the case of an adult patient diagnosed with an atypical form of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, thereby emphasizing the different possible syndrome phenotypes and the difficulty of their diagnosis.

Down syndrome and postoperative complications after paediatric cardiac surgery: a propensity-matched analysis.

Objectives: The incidence of congenital heart disease is ~50%, mostly related to endocardial cushion defects. The aim of our study was to investigate the postoperative complications that occur after paediatric cardiac surgery.

Methods: Our perioperative data were analysed in paediatric patients with Down syndrome undergoing cardiac surgery.

Hydatid cyst of the pancreas causing portal hypertension.

Pancreatic localization of hydatid cyst is uncommon. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman who presented with abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting. The diagnosis of pancreatic cyst with splenomegaly and portal hypertension was supported on ultrasound, CT-scan and endoscopic ultrasound.

Gastric stromal tumor: a rare cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a subset of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors, though relatively rare in absolute terms. They are characterized by a remarkable cellular variability and their malignant potential is sometimes difficult to predict. We report a case of gastric stromal tumor in a 66 year old patient with a long history of anemia and intermitent upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Effect of cyclophosphamide in active nonviral cirrhosis.

The immunologic effects of cyclophosphamide were studied in 16 patients with active nonviral liver cirrhosis with a view to improving the pathogenetic treatment of these diseases. The clearance of colloidal particles by Kupffer cells in collagen disease.

The Kupffer cells clearance of colloidal 198Au particles with a diameter of 200-300 A was estimated in 14 subjects with different collagen diseases: 7 without previous treatment and 7 under immunodepressive treatment compared to 10 controls. No difference between the subjects with collagen disease and controls was observed. The group with collagen disease under immunodepressive treatment has lower Kupffer cells clearance for colloidal gold particles than non-treated patients, without statistical significance.

Histologic changes in the guinea pig gastrointestinal tract following 1 weeks' administration of chlorpromazine, haloperidol or atropine.

A comparison was made between the toxic effects of chronic chlorpromazine, haloperidol or atropine on the guinea pig intestinal tract. Chlorpromazine, administered at a dose of 30 mg/kg/day, IP for 7 days, produced marked pathologic changes in the guinea pig cecum, consisting of inflammation, edema and hemorrhage. None of these effects were noted when haloperidol, 2 or 10 mg/kg/day or atropine 30 mg/kg/day were similarly administered.

Significance of serum aminograms in diagnosis and prognosis of liver diseases.

The diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of various liver diseases are still frequently equivocal despite the various liver function tests and invasive procedures presently available to the clinician. The introduction of the Beckman Amino Acid Analyzer Model 119 Cl, greatly facilitated the determination of the individual amino acids in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, and the data thus obtained seem to help in the differentiation of some of the commoner types of liver disease. These data indicate that changes in the concentration of some of the aromatic amino acids (AAA) and branched chain amino acids (BCAA) are helpful in the diagnosis, evaluation of the severity of the hepatic morphologic changes, and prognosis of the type of liver disease.

Histologic grading of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands.

Seventy-nine patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in salivary glands were studied to determine whether a correlation existed between the morphologic features of the tumor and the prognosis. Three histologic grades were established: Grade I, tumors with tubular and cribriform areas but without solid components; Grade II, cribriform tumors that were either pure or mixed with less than 30% of solid areas; and Grade III, tumors with a predominantly solid pattern. Cumulative survival rates at 15 years were 39%, 26%, and 5%, for Grades I, II, and III, respectively.

Congestive heart failure as cause of fulminant hepatic failure.

In this patient with long-standing cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure the syndrome of fulminant hepatic failure developed on two occasions; he recovered both times. There was no evidence of viral or toxic hepatitis as a cause of his liver failure. We conclude that in this case, aggravation of long-standing congestive heart failure may have led to severe hepatocellular necrosis with signs of encephalopathy not commonly observed.

Immunoglobulins in submassive hepatic necrosis.

The presence of submassive hepatic necrosis in acute liver injury of viral or toxic etiology in liver biopsy specimens is of great diagnostic and prognostic significance. Liver biopsy, however, cannot be performed in some of these patients due to an abnormal coagulation profile. Hence, other noninvasive methods for diagnosis of submassive hepatic necrosis would be helpful.

The efficacy and toxicity of perfluoroctylbromide in myelography were studied in dogs. Perfluoroctylbromide moves freely in intrathecal space and provides satisfactory radiopacity for diagnosis of subarachnoid structures. The outstanding feature of this substance is its low toxicity.
