Influence of magnetic convection on separation efficiency in magnetophoretic microfluidic processes: a combined simulation and experimental study.

This work explores the complex hydrodynamics in magnetophoretic microfluidic processes, focusing on the interplay of forces and particle concentrations. The study employs a combined simulation and experimental approach to investigate the impact of magnetophoresis on magneto-responsive nanoparticles (MNPs) and their environment, including non-magneto-responsive nanoparticles (non-MNPs) in a microfluidic system. Our findings reveal that the motion of MNPs induces a hydrodynamic convective motion of non-MNPs, significantly affecting the separation efficiency and purity of the particles.

Hospitalization Following Outpatient Diagnosis of Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Adults.

Importance: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory tract infections among adults and is estimated to cause approximately 159 000 hospitalizations among adults aged 65 years and older in the US each year. Estimates of hospitalization among adults with outpatient medically attended RSV (MA-RSV) infections are required to design interventional studies that aim to prevent hospitalization.

Objective: To assess absolute risk of 28-day, all-cause hospitalization following outpatient MA-RSV infections in adults.

Immersed boundary method for dynamic simulation of polarizable colloids of arbitrary shape in explicit ion electrolytes.

We develop a computational method for modeling electrostatic interactions of arbitrarily shaped, polarizable objects on colloidal length scales, including colloids/nanoparticles, polymers, and surfactants, dispersed in explicit ion electrolytes and nonionic solvents. Our method computes the nonuniform polarization charge distribution induced in a colloidal particle by both externally applied electric fields and local electric fields arising from other charged objects in the dispersion. This leads to expressions for electrostatic energies, forces, and torques that enable efficient molecular dynamics and Brownian dynamics simulations of colloidal dispersions in electrolytes, which can be harnessed to accurately predict structural and transport properties.

Combined hypoglossal and lingual nerve palsy: An unrecognized complication after orotracheal intubation for general anaesthesia. A case report of a day surgery patient and a literature review.

Cranial nerve injury after orotracheal intubation is a rare complication, which has varied etiology. We present a case of combined unilateral hypoglossal and lingual nerve palsy after orotracheal intubation. The current literature was reviewed for the diagnostic, treatment, follow-up, and preventive measures of this complication.

The development of international wound debridement best practice recommendations: Consensus between nurses specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada and the society of tissue viability.

Unlabelled: Debridement is an important component of wound management and can improve outcomes for patients. Debridement needs to be done by an appropriately trained health professional, but the scope of practice, credentials, training, competencies, and regulatory requirements regarding wound debridement can differ. Best Practice Recommendations were created to positively influence patient safety related to all methods of debridement, across the continuum of care, and to be implemented widely by nurses at all professional levels in Canada.

Objective: Blockade of activin 2 receptor (ACVR2) signaling has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and aid in weight loss. Inhibition of ACVR2 signaling restores cardiac function in multiple heart failure models. However, its potential in the treatment of obesity-related cardiometabolic disease remains unknown.

Wound care in older people: overcoming the challenges of assessment and management.

Age-related skin changes lead to increased susceptibility to skin damage and delayed wound healing, which is exacerbated by comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. In some cases, wound healing is not achievable or realistic and this needs to be reflected in the wound management plan. To improve outcomes and experience in older people presenting with wounds it is important to select wound management products that protect the wound bed and surrounding skin, minimise trauma, reduce symptoms and/or promote healing.

Purpose: The open Trillat Procedure described to treat recurrent shoulder instability, has a renewed interest with the advent of arthroscopy. The suprascapular nerve (SSN) is theoretically at risk during the drilling of the scapula near the spinoglenoid notch. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the screw securing the coracoid transfer and the SSN during open Trillat Procedure and define a safe zone for the SSN.

This study estimated adherence to two quality indicators (QIs) to optimize NSAID safety: add proton pump inhibitors (PPI) to NSAIDs for patients with gastrointestinal (GI) risk (QI #1 NSAID-PPI) and avoid oral NSAIDs in chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage G4 or G5 (QI #2 NSAID-CKD).

Opioid receptor antagonism and neural response to monetary rewards: Pilot studies in light and heavy alcohol users.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a prevalent condition associated with high degree of comorbidity and mortality. Among the few approved pharmacotherapies for AUD, two involve opioid receptor antagonism. Naltrexone and nalmefene are thought to act via opioid receptor blockage to reduce neural response to alcohol and drug-associated cues and consumption, but there have been limited efforts to characterize these effects in humans.

While data-driven models provide accessible alternatives to expensive first-principles models and less accurate empirical models in many engineering disciplines, the development of similar models for complex fluids has lagged. The diversity of techniques for characterizing non-Newtonian fluid dynamics creates a challenge for classical machine learning approaches, which require uniformly structured training data.

Background: Guidelines support area-under-the-curve (AUC) monitoring for vancomycin dosing which may lower overall doses and reduce acute kidney injury (AKI).

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare incidence of AKI across 3 vancomycin dosing modalities: AUC-targeted Bayesian pharmacokinetic software, AUC-targeted empiric dosing nomogram, and trough-guided dosing using clinical pharmacists' judgment.

Methods: This retrospective study included adult patients with a pharmacy dosing consult who received ≥1 dose of vancomycin and ≥1 serum vancomycin level documented between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019.

Mice are the most commonly used laboratory animal, yet there are limited studies which investigate the effects of repeated handling on their welfare and scientific outcomes. Furthermore, simple methods to evaluate distress in mice are lacking, and specialized behavioral or biochemical tests are often required. Here, two groups of CD1 mice were exposed to either traditional laboratory handling methods or a training protocol with cup lifting for 3 and 5 weeks.

A clinical science guide for reviewing the cross-cultural rigor of assessments in an alcohol training clinic.

A standard component of service delivery in alcohol treatment clinics is evidence-based assessment (EBA). Although EBA is essential for selecting appropriate treatment modalities for alcohol use and associated problems, there are limitations in existing EBAs concerning evidence of cultural equivalence and utility among individuals seeking alcohol treatment. However, training in EBA, addictions, and clinical applications with diverse populations all are gaps in clinical training in doctoral programs in clinical psychology.
