30 cylindrical commercially pure titanium fiber porous coated Ti6A14V implants were inserted press-fit into the proximal humeral portion of 30 sheep humeri to determine the systemic effect of recombinant factor XIII and placenta-derived factor XIII concentrate on bone ingrowth and on strength of fixation. For both the recombinant factor XIII and the factor XIII concentrate group the volume fraction of bone ingrowth and the strength of fixation was higher when compared with the control specimens. However the difference was only significant for the factor XIII concentrate group.

There appear to be two clinically distinct syndromes involving this nerve--a lesion of the musculocutaneous before its division into the lateral cutaneous nerve, causing a mixed motor and sensory syndrome, and a lesion of the sensory portion, which causes pure sensory findings of the lower radial aspect of the volar forearm. The diagnosis of the more proximal lesion is made by the findings of biceps weakness with no deltoid or other muscle involvement, with the possible exception of the coracobrachialis.

We proposed five diagnostic criteria for allergic fungal sinusitis including: (1) the demonstration of the characteristic eosinophil-rich allergic mucin visually or histopathologically, (2) a positive fungal stain or culture from the sinus at surgery, and (3) the absence of immunodeficiency or diabetes. With these criteria, seven patients in our metropolitan area with allergic fungal sinusitis were identified in a short period.

Chest pain in children and adolescents is usually of a noncardiac origin; only 5% of cases are due to cardiac problems. With a properly documented history and physical evaluation, one can usually identify the etiology of the chest discomfort or at least rule out any serious difficulties.

Many vitamins and their derivatives, however, are currently being used in the mainstream of medicine as therapeutic modalities.
Methods: A MEDLINE literature search for clinical reviews and original studies on the use of vitamins in medicine was conducted along with a search of the obtained papers' bibliographies.
In brief Corticosteroid injection is a valuable adjunct for treating sports-related inflammation. Unfortunately, these agents are not without toxicities and side effects. It's important, therefore, to choose a corticosteroid appropriate to the patient, the condition, and the size of the affected joint: For example, less soluble agents are generally better for longer-term injuries.

This experiment studied changes in brain activity as subjects performed a variable demand spatial rotation task. The task involved the sequential presentation of a template histogram and a spatially rotated comparison histogram. Task difficulty was manipulated by varying the number of bars and the degree of rotation.

However, it is unclear what percentage of those affected may have discrete medical conditions that are exacerbated by strenuous physical exertion. Perhaps, difficult physical training sessions function as a "stress test" for the colon.

In Experiment 1, hippocampal EEG activity and perforant path LTP were assessed in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. Water deprivation did not affect baseline cell excitability or low-frequency synaptic transmission in the dentate gyrus, but it increased the magnitude of perforant path LTP and elevated the proportion of theta rhythm in the EEG.

At present, the most parsimonious hypothesis is that the essential memory traces for classical conditioning of eyelid closure, limb flexion, and other discrete responses learned with an aversive US are formed in cerebellar cortex and interpositus nucleus. Both sites contain neuronal elements which encode both conditioned and unconditioned stimuli.

While the selection of the most appropriate NSAID should be based on therapeutic efficacy, adverse reaction profile, concurrent therapy, simplicity of dosage regimen, patient acceptance and compliance, cost, and the specific patient's medical profile, prescribing habits are often not based on specific guidelines. The choice of NSAID is further complicated by the wide variety of available agents; over 20 NSAIDs are presently available to the primary care physician.

To investigate phage activity in the rumen, a method for quantifying phage has been developed. By differential centrifugation and ultrafiltration, phage particles were separated and concentrated from ruminal fluid. Linear double-stranded DNA from this fraction containing predominantly tailed phage was isolated and separated by size, using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

Training was accomplished using a 1 kHz tone as the conditioned stimulus (CS) and 1 ml of sweetened water as the unconditioned stimulus (US). The interstimulus interval was 250 ms.

Two simple clinical tests, the external rotational recurvatum test and the posterolateral drawer test, can identify this injury to the arcuate ligament complex. Treatment consists of bracing and physical therapy and, in some cases, surgery.

A "pop" heard or felt at the time of injury, a prolonged course, or a history of several previous injuries are all of concern. Medial tenderness on palpation, positive results on a squeeze test, or markedly positive results on stress testing are also indicators of severe injuries, which may require referral for treatment.

Rabbits were implanted with chronic stimulating electrodes in white matter underlying lobule HVI of the cerebellar cortex. Stimulation elicited movements of the face or neck and, when paired with a tone conditioned stimulus (CS), produced learning comparable to that seen with peripheral unconditioned stimuli (USs). CS-alone trials produced extinction.

The effects of water deprivation on hippocampal responsiveness and behavior during nictitating membrane (NM) conditioning were assessed in 12 New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The results showed that water deprivation produced a significant shift in electroencephalographic (EEG) frequencies such that deprived rabbits had a higher proportion of 2-8 Hz activity than did ad-lib controls. In subsequent NM training, the rabbits took significantly fewer trials to reach criterion (M = 66 vs.

Homogeneous dual exposures administered at 126 R/minute were more effective than those administered at 63 R/minute. Dorsal and dual exposures at 63 R/minute were equally effective, while absorption reduced the effectiveness of ventral exposures.

A case report of impaired exercise tolerance during administration of broxyquinoline-brobenzoxaldine combination in therapeutic doses is presented. The first author of this paper, a 28-year-old healthy male, volunteered as a subject for a prospective study on the neurotoxicity of halogenated hydroxyquinolines and took a course of broxyquinoline-brobenzoxaldine combination. The author, who is a karate enthusiast, observed impairment of exercise tolerance during the course of treatment with the drugs.
