Objectives: Immune regulatory mechanisms may limit the immunopathologic condition of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and suppress cellular immune responses in the host. We investigated the CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) circulating regulatory T cells (T(reg)) in patients with cavity multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) before and after surgery.
Methods: We compared the proportion of T(reg) cells in 13 patients with cavity MDR-TB pre- and postoperatively and in 10 healthy control subjects by flow cytometry using three specific markers in peripheral blood lymphocytes: cell-surface CD4 and CD25 expression and intracellular FoxP3 expression.

Objective: To describe the mortality of colorectal and anal cancer in the Chinese population during 2004 - 2005.
Methods: Mortality of colorectal and anal cancer from The 3rd National Death Retrospective Sampling Survey (2004 - 2005) were analyzed, with that the total population was 142 660 482 person-year and the number of death cases was 10 586. Crude death rate, age-standardized death rate by Chinese standard population (CASR) and world standard population (WASR), the constitute proportion to all cancer deaths and rank of cancer death were calculated and compared with The 1st (during 1973 - 1975) and The 2nd (during 1990 - 1992) National Death Retrospective Surveys.

Objective: To describe geographical distribution and its transition of mortality of cancers in China.
Methods: The information of 2 513 949 310 person years were collected in 1973-1975 and 142 660 482 person years in 2004-2005 respectively. Being standardizing the death rates of these two survey with 2000 national census population, the changes of mortality of main cancers was observed and the geographic distribution of cancers in 2004-2005 was analyzed.
Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) isolated from one of the Chinese herbs, Astragalus mongholicus, are known to have a variety of immunomodulatory activities. However, it is not yet clear whether APS can induce the activation and differentiation of dendritic cells (DCs) and subsequently activate T cells.
Aim Of The Study: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of APS on the differentiation of splenic DCs and its influence on T cell-mediated immunity through interleukin (IL)-12-producing CD11c(high)CD45RB(low) DCs in vitro.
Background: Extracting and visualizing of protein-protein interaction (PPI) from text literatures are a meaningful topic in protein science. It assists the identification of interactions among proteins. There is a lack of tools to extract PPI, visualize and classify the results.

Traditional Chinese compound medicines are less inclined to induce bacterial resistance in the clinical setting because of their multi-acting mechanisms. However, most current research is limited to bacteriostasis in vitro using single extracts or formulations.

Methods: With method of cross sectional survey, 6339 married women at age of 25 to 54 years were selected randomly in 137 communities of 12 districts or counties in Beijing from March 2007 to September 2008. The cervical smear cytology and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of cervical secretion were detected.
The involvement of the cholinergic system in learning and memory in honeybees has been well established using olfactory conditioning. We examined the effect of Methyl Parathion (MeP), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor of the organo-phosphate family, on the learning and recall of visual and olfactory discrimination tasks in honeybees. One of our expectations was to observe the effects induced by both the nicotinic and muscarinic systems, as the blocking of acetylcholinesterase should induce an increase in the activity of both systems.

Objective: To study the immunologic mechanism in pathogenesis of the acute pancreatitis (AP) and the intervention effects of sandostatin and magnolol.
Methods: Ninety BALB/c mice were divided into negative control group, caerulein-induced model group, sandostatin-treatment group, magnolol-treatment group, combined sandostatin- and magnolol-treatment group by means of random number table, with 18 mice in each group. AP model was reproduced by seven intraperitoneal injections of caerulein at an interval of 1 hour.
Despite a good understanding of the process that initiates and promotes host inflammation induced by acute injury, little is known about the host immune cells responsible for the inhibition of inflammatory response to thermal injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effect of naturally existing CD11c(low)CD45RB(high) dendritic cells (CD11c(low)CD45RB(high) DCs) on acute severe inflammatory response and mortality rate in burned mice. Changes in the percentage of distinct subsets of splenic DCs and production of cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, CCL-2) as well as CC chemokine (CCL)-2 were measured by FACS at various time points.

Tumor classification is an important application domain of gene expression data. Because of its characteristics of high dimensionality and small sample size (SSS), and a great number of redundant genes not related to tumor phenotypes, various feature extraction or gene selection methods have been applied to gene expression data analysis. Wavelet packet transforms (WPT) and neighborhood rough sets (NRS) are effective tools to extract and select features.
