Background: Extracellular matrix remodeling in the aortic wall results in increased aortic stiffness (AoS) in Marfan syndrome (MFS). Pulsed-wave velocity (PWV) constitutes the best indirect AoS measurement. We aimed to assess PWV in MFS patients using two-dimensional (2D) and Doppler echocardiography.

Current treatments do not alter the underlying disease processes meaning new treatments are required if this imminent epidemic is to be averted. The clinical manifestations of AD are secondary to a substantial loss of cortical neurons.

Effect of aortic stiffness on left ventricular long-axis systolic function in adults with Marfan syndrome.

Introduction: several studies have documented increased aortic stiffness in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) using echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Recent studies have also shown primary myocardial impairment in MFS. We investigated whether left ventricular (LV) function could be further impaired when acting against a stiff vascular system.

Postpartum anxiety, depression and social health: findings from a population-based survey of Australian women.

Background: Whilst the prevalence and correlates of postpartum depression are well established, far less is known about postpartum anxiety. Studies have described the association between socio-demographic factors and postpartum depression, yet few have explored the association between stressors in women's lives around the time of having a baby and maternal psychological morbidity. This study aimed to describe the population prevalence of postpartum depression, anxiety, co-morbid anxiety and depression and social health issues; and to examine the association between postpartum psychological and social health issues experienced in the six months following birth.

A moveable 3-Tesla intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging system.

Background: Based on success with a prototype 1.5T intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) system and the desire for increased signal-to-noise ratio, along with its relationship to image quality and advanced applications, a 3.0T system that uses the same novel moveable magnet configuration was developed.

Maternal cardiac dysfunction and remodeling in women with preeclampsia at term.

Preeclampsia is a disease associated with significant cardiovascular morbidity during pregnancy and in later life. This study was designed to evaluate cardiac function and remodeling in preeclampsia occurring at term. This was a prospective case-control study of 50 term preeclampsia and 50 normal pregnancies assessed by echocardiography and tissue Doppler analysis.

Effect of force feedback from each DOF on the motion accuracy of a surgical tool in performing a robot-assisted tracing task.

In robot-assisted surgery, it may be important to provide force feedback to the hand of the surgeon. Here we examine how force feedback from each degree of freedom (DOF) on a hand controller affects the motion accuracy of a surgical tool. We studied the motion accuracy of a needle-shaped tool in performing a robot-assisted tracing task.

Successful ablation for atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia in a patient with left atrial isomerism.

Left atrial isomerism (LAI) is characterized by the presence of two morphologically identical atria. It is commonly associated with conduction defects. We report a case of LAI presenting with highly symptomatic atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia, which was cured by ablation.

Exploiting the potential of molecular profiling in Parkinson's disease: current practice and future probabilities.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common, heterogeneous syndrome diagnosed clinically by the presence of classical neurological symptoms and the absence of 'red flags' that suggest alternative secondary parkinsonian disorders. Neuropathologically, nigrostriatal loss and the presence of proteinaceous inclusions (Lewy bodies) confirm the diagnosis. For PD, molecular profiling promises much but is yet to deliver in terms of breakthroughs for identifying at-risk individuals, detecting disease at early stages, improving diagnostic certainty, prognosticating future outcomes or providing surrogate markers of therapeutic efficacy.

Paediatric sickle cell disease: pulmonary hypertension but normal vascular resistance.

Background: Adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) and pulmonary hypertension have high mortality but death in SCD children with pulmonary hypertension is rare. The authors hypothesised that pulmonary hypertension in SCD children may be secondary to anaemia-induced high cardiac output rather than pulmonary vascular disease.

Methods: Two independent, validated techniques were used to estimate pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in 50 SCD children and 50 matched controls.

Biomechanics of humerus fracture fixation by locking, cortical, and hybrid plating systems in a cadaver model.

Disease-specific, neurosphere-derived cells as models for brain disorders.

There is a pressing need for patient-derived cell models of brain diseases that are relevant and robust enough to produce the large quantities of cells required for molecular and functional analyses. We describe here a new cell model based on patient-derived cells from the human olfactory mucosa, the organ of smell, which regenerates throughout life from neural stem cells. Olfactory mucosa biopsies were obtained from healthy controls and patients with either schizophrenia, a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder, or Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative disease.

Background And Purpose: The overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its mutated variant EGFRvIII occurs in 50% of glioblastoma multiforme. We developed antibody fragments against EGFR/EGFRvIII for molecular imaging and/or therapeutic targeting applications.

The role of echocardiographic deformation imaging in hypertrophic myopathies.

Echocardiography has a leading role in the routine assessment and diagnosis of hypertrophic ventricles. However, the use of M-mode echocardiography and measurement of global left ventricular function may be misleading. Traditionally, systolic function was thought to be preserved in patients with hypertrophic myopathies until the late stages of the disease, and hypertrophic myopathies were thought to affect the myocardium more diffusely than ischemic heart disease.

Deep vein and intracardiac thrombosis during the post-partum period in Behçet's disease.

A 22-year-old woman presented on the 10th post-partum day with deep vein thrombosis involving the right ilio-femoral and popliteal veins. This thrombosis was refractory to conventional anticoagulation and subsequently over a period of 6 weeks progressed to involve inferior vena cava and right ventricle. A diagnosis of Behçet's disease was made on the clinical grounds of fever, night sweats, and recurrent oral ulcers.

This study explored the perceived needs of health professional and peer facilitators of cancer support groups. Participants were facilitators of support groups affiliated with The Cancer Council Victoria (Australia). Facilitators completed questionnaires assessing their experience of support group facilitation, including training and support needs.

Kawasaki disease presenting as cardiac tamponade with ruptured giant aneurysm of the right coronary artery.

We report a case of a 22-year-old man with Kawasaki disease presenting with features of cardiac tamponade following rupture of giant aneurysm of his right coronary artery. He underwent an emergency operation. Aneurysmal sac was of size 4x4 cm.

Application of intraoperative high-field magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric neurosurgery.

Object: Over the past decade, the use of intraoperative MR (iMR) imaging in the pediatric neurosurgical population has become increasingly accepted as an innovative and important neurosurgical tool. The authors summarize their experience using a mobile 1.5-T iMR imaging unit with integrated neuronavigation with the goal of identifying procedures and/or pathologies in which the application of this technology changed the course of surgery or modified the operative strategy.
