CT lymphangiography of the thoracic duct in mice: direct mesenteric versus popliteal lymph node puncture.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) lymphangiography after direct mesenteric lymph node injection for thoracic duct (TD) visualization in mice.

Methods: Twelve female BALB/c mice were injected with 35 μL of iodinated contrast medium (iomeprol 350 mgI/mL) into the mesenteric (mesenteric group) or popliteal (popliteal group) lymph nodes. CT images were acquired before injection and 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, and 15 min after injection using a micro-CT scanner.

Age distribution and risk factors for Barrett's esophagus by sex at health check-up settings in Japan.

Background: Given the high prevalence of esophageal adenocarcinoma and Barrett's esophagus (BE), a precancerous lesion, among males, it is important to understand the characteristics of BE by sex to develop an effective endoscopic surveillance program in Japan. The present study examined the age distribution and risk factors for BE in the Japanese health check-up cohort by sex.

Methods: The data set at baseline of our preceding multicenter study, comprising a total of 33,478 individuals who underwent upper endoscopic screening at 17 health check-up institutes across Japan, was utilized.

Introduction: Despite a dramatic increase in the incidence of mild-cognitive impairment (MCI) and early dementia, accessible and engaging screening methods for older adults are lacking. Gamification has gained attention in the self-management of various health conditions, making it a promising avenue for dementia screening. This study aimed to evaluate a gamified mobile application for the early detection of cognitive impairment associated with dementia.

Lack of an association between spleen volume and risk of pneumococcal infection in cancer patients: a nested case-control study.

Background: The spleen is a key organ in preventing pneumococcal infection, especially in patients with immunocompromised condition such as those with cancer. Previous studies have shown that a small spleen volume in pneumococcal pneumonia patients is associated with severe disease course. However, it is unknown whether a small spleen increases risk of pneumococcal infection.

Hemodialysis-Related Portal-Systemic Encephalopathy Possibly Associated with Right Femoral Vein Thrombosis: A Case Report.

In hemodialysis-related portal-systemic encephalopathy (HRPSE), transient negative pressure in the inferior vena cava (IVC) during dialysis increases the blood flow through a portal-systemic shunt, leading to encephalopathy. We report the case of a 74-year-old man with a gastrorenal shunt who developed HRPSE for the first time following venous occlusion due to thrombosis around a right femoral tunneled-cuffed hemodialysis catheter. Before the thrombosis dissolved, ammonia levels increased after dialysis.

Comparison of predicted and actual dermatitis generated from computed tomography images and dose distribution maps.

Anticipating the onset, location and severity of radiation dermatitis before radiotherapy can aid in dermatological care. This study developed a method for creation of a prediction diagram for dermatitis and conducted a comparative verification between the prediction diagram and actual patient condition. The prediction diagram involved converting skin doses into 2 Gy fractionated equivalent doses using α/β of 10.

A case of Cushing's syndrome in a pregnant woman associated with hypertension, hypokalemia, and gestational diabetes mellitus.

We report the case of a 33-year-old woman who was referred to the department of endocrinology and diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). She had been hypertensive from 20 weeks of pregnancy. A 75 g oral glucose tolerance test for screening of GDM at 26 weeks of pregnancy revealed positive results at two points: 183 mg/dL at 60 min, and 193 mg/dL at 90 min.

Summary: We present the case of a 50-year-old Japanese woman who was transferred to our hospital with a 2-day history of fever, sore throat, and malaise. She was diagnosed with acromegaly 9 months ago while being treated for diabetic ketoacidosis, for which she underwent pituitary surgery. She was diagnosed with hypopituitarism postoperatively and was prescribed hydrocortisone and levothyroxine.

Effects of human amniotic membrane on the angiogenesis and healing of ischemic wounds in a rat model.

Although the human amniotic membrane (hAM) has been demonstrated to promote angiogenesis, its efficacy in healing ischemic wounds remains unknown. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the potential of hAM as a dressing for treating ischemic wounds. The inferior abdominal wall arteries and veins of male rats were divided, and an ischemic wound was created on each side of the abdominal wall.

Aims: This study identified the distinct magnetic resonance imaging findings of cervical gastric-type adenocarcinoma (GAS) that can help differentiate it from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and usual-type endocervical adenocarcinoma (UEA) and reveal the radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Materials And Methods: All consecutive patients with cervical GAS treated at our hospital from November 2009 to August 2021 were included. The SCC and UEA cases were considered controls.

Background: Tracheostomy procedures inhibit swallowing, although details of subsequent recovery of oral intake remain unknown. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate factors influencing dysphagia improvement in patients with subacute stroke after tracheostomy.

Methods And Results: The study included 117 patients who underwent tracheostomy after subacute stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, or endogenous subarachnoid hemorrhage and received care at 2 convalescent rehabilitation wards in urban and suburban Japan between 2015 and 2022.

Metastatic Pleomorphic Carcinoma of the Lung with Extensive Chromosomal Rearrangements: An Autopsy Case with a Literature Review.

We herein report a 47-year-old man who presented with progressive paraparesis. Imaging revealed a right upper pulmonary nodule, massive bilateral adrenal metastases, thoracolumbar vertebral osteolysis, and subcutaneous nodules. A biopsy of the right buttock nodule revealed a poorly differentiated metastatic carcinoma with high programmed cell death-ligand 1 expression and extensive chromosomal rearrangements.

Bipolar disorder and Lewy body dementia: case report and literature review.

Depressive episodes with psychotic symptoms are prevalent among the older adults, emphasizing the need to differentiate them from dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), in which depressive and psychotic symptoms commonly coexist. In contrast, psychotic symptoms occur more frequently in depressive episodes of bipolar disorder (BD) than in major depressive disorder (MDD). Although MDD is a significant risk factor for dementia, studies exploring the relationship between BD and dementia are lacking.

Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus Initially Diagnosed As Cluster Headache, Complicated by Delayed Eruption.

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) manifests as a consequence of the reactivation of the Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and primarily affects the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. Identification of the vesicular eruption is central to the diagnostic process; however, the delayed manifestation of this cutaneous phenomenon poses a challenge to timely and accurate diagnosis. This report elucidates the case of a 61-year-old Japanese male with painful trigeminal neuropathy attributed to VZV that was initially diagnosed as cluster headache, mainly due to the delayed cutaneous eruption.

Various types of hemostatic agents are used to manage bleeding in surgery. Many such agents are animal products, which carry the risk of secondary infection. The aim of this study is to develop a novel hemostatic agent from a non-animal source that quickly stops bleeding, is easy to use, and has no risk of infection.
