Background: Emergency Department (ED) visits and health care costs are increasing globally, but little is known about contributing factors of ED resource consumption. This study aims to analyse and to predict the total ED resource consumption out of the patient and consultation characteristics in order to execute performance analysis and evaluate quality improvements.
Methods: Characteristics of ED visits of a large Swiss university hospital were summarized according to acute patient condition factors (e.
Background: Targeted genetic testing is a tool to identify women at increased risk of gynaecological cancer.
Objective: This systematic review evaluates the results and quality of cost-effectiveness modeling studies that assessed targeted genetic-based screen-and-treat strategies to prevent breast and ovarian cancer.
Methods: Using MEDLINE and databases of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, we searched for health economic modeling evaluations of targeted genetic-based screen-and-treat strategies to prevent inheritable breast and ovarian cancer (until August 2020).
Smiles that vary in muscular configuration also vary in how they are perceived. Previous research suggests that "Duchenne smiles," indicated by the combined actions of the orbicularis oculi (cheek raiser) and the zygomaticus major muscles (lip corner puller), signal enjoyment. This research has compared perceptions of Duchenne smiles with non-Duchenne smiles among individuals voluntarily innervating or inhibiting the orbicularis oculi muscle.

However, standardized protocols for their generation are limited. Particularly, cost-effectiveness considerations of cell production protocols are of importance for conducting clinical studies.

Both constructive interference in steady state (CISS) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted volume-interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) sequences are frequently used. The aim of the present study was to compare the accuracy and interrater reliability of these sequences in predicting optic canal invasion by TSMs.

We integrated a new PROM for transition-age youth with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Patient-Reported Outcome (PEDI-PRO), with a computer-delivered survey platform (Accessible Testing Learning and Assessment System) to enhance cognitive accessibility.
Objective: To evaluate the usability of the PEDI-PRO software and to investigate its reliability and acceptability to transition-age youth with IDD.
Background: Frailty is a common characteristic of patients undergoing transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR). It is unclear whether the physical vulnerability of frail patients translates into increased procedural health care utilization.
Methods And Results: Frailty was assessed using the Fried criteria in 229 patients undergoing TMVR using the MitraClip system at our institution and associations with total costs and costs by cost centers within the hospital incurred during periprocedural hospitalization were examined.
Introduction: Systems medicine is based on approaches taken from systems biology, omics research, bio-informatics and network theory. It promises to facilitate a better understanding of the causes of diseases, detection at an earlier stage, and the use of tailor-made approaches to prevention and therapy. This study provides information on how systems medicine could be incorporated into the German healthcare system.

Minimum datasets for routine data collection in healthcare facilities participating in DIPLOMATIC (initially in Malawi) were designed to assist understanding of baseline maternal and neonatal care processes and outcomes, and facilitate evaluation of improvement interventions and pragmatic clinical trials.
Design: Published and grey literature was reviewed alongside extensive in-country consultation to define relevant clinical best practice guidance, and the existing local data and reporting infrastructure, to identify requirements for the minimum datasets.
Background: Providing patient-centered care (PCC) during the last year of life (LYOL) can be challenging due to the complexity of the patients' medical, social and psychological needs, especially in case of chronic illnesses. Assessing PCC can be helpful in identifying areas for improvements. Since not all patients can be surveyed, a questionnaire for proxy informants was developed in order to retrospectively assess patient-centeredness in care during the whole LYOL.

These are the first X-ray diffraction results obtained non-invasively from objects within a mummy. The CT data showed human remains of a 5-year-old child, consistent with the female (but not the age) depicted on the portrait.

In cases where the targeted patients are unable to express their own perspective, for example, due to them being too young or suffering from severe impairments, proxies can serve as substitutes. Proxies are frequently used in care planning and consent.

This study aimed to explain the high rate of soil organic matter (SOM) mineralisation and CO release from humid temperate rainforest soils under oxygen-limited conditions. The investigated mechanisms challenge the traditional view that SOM mineralisation in rainforest is slow due to anaerobic (micro)environments under high precipitation and explain intensive CO release even under oxygen limitation.

To implement patient-centered care in health and social care organizations successfully, particular organizational preconditions need to be considered. Findings on the implementation of patient-centered care and its preconditions are rare and insufficiently account for the organizational context to explain differences.

Approach And Results: Patients with iCCA from the European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma (ENS-CCA) and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries with survival/staging (AJCC v.7) data were eligible.
Objective: To determine the risk of spontaneous and medically indicated preterm birth associated with mode of birth in previous term-born pregnancy.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Setting: Two UK maternity units.
Objectives: Following the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus and the subsequent global spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), health systems and the populations who use them have faced unprecedented challenges. We aimed to measure the impact of COVID-19 on the uptake of hospital-based care at a national level.
Design: The study period (weeks ending 5 January to 28 June 2020) encompassed the pandemic announcement by the World Health Organization and the initiation of the UK lockdown.
Objectives: Copy-number variations (CNVs) are large-scale deletions or duplications of DNA that have required specialized detection methods, such as microarray-based genomic hybridization or multiplex ligation probe amplification. However, recent advances in bioinformatics have made it possible to detect CNVs from next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) data. Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) 5 is a subtype of autosomal-dominant diabetes that is often caused by heterozygous deletions involving the HNF1B gene on chromosome 17q12.
