Homodimers of immunoglobulin VL domains are minimal models of antibodies in that they display an ensemble of six hypervariable loops. Bence Jones protein REI is a mixture of a complete kappa light chain and the corresponding variable domain (REIV). The known three-dimensional structure of the REIV dimer (Epp et al.

In this paper an analysis is presented of factors accounting for differences in levels of boredom and activities of residents of homes for the aged. Eighty respondents in two homes for the aged were interviewed. Results indicate that residents with a positive perception of the participatory climate report lower levels of boredom but do not participate in activities more often than other residents.

The highest reported prevalence of celiac disease (gluten-sensitive enteropathy) is found in the West of Ireland. Recent genetic data have suggested that major histocompatibility complex-linked loci may have a dominant genetic effect for disease susceptibility in this population compared with a recessive effect in other groups. To further understand the role of the MHC in celiac disease in the West of Ireland, we analyzed markers for 22 MHC haplotypes from celiac patients and compared them with 18 nontransmitted haplotypes found in the parents of celiac children, and with reported haplotypes from other populations.

The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) is a widely used health status measure, known to be valid and reliable. After the final development and testing in 1978, however, in which several methodological aspects were investigated, no descriptions of research projects that systematically evaluate the methodological and theoretical aspects of the instrument were found. In this article a review is presented of literature on the SIP.

A population-based, case-control study of sporadic salmonellosis was conducted in 1988 and 1989 in four northern California counties. The study included 120 patients and 265 control subjects. Conditional logistic regression analysis (adjusted for age) revealed that patients were more likely to consume undercooked chicken prior to the onset of disease (odds ratio [OR], 23.

In this paper, an analysis is presented of professional and bureaucratic predictors of physician satisfaction. Results from 210 physicians in 17 medical departments of university hospitals support the hypotheses that both professional attitudes and formal structuring of work activities have a positive effect on physician satisfaction. It is shown that behavior formalization, preference for professional autonomy and the time spent on patient care activities within medical departments are positive predictors of satisfaction with work environment, while 'traditional' professional attitudes like craftsmanship and client service have more impact on satisfaction with patient demand.

One hundred and seven cystine-containing urinary calculi from 1 female and 101 male dogs were analyzed. Cystine-containing calculi accounted for 2% (107 of 5,375) of all canine urinary calculi submitted to the urinary stone analysis laboratory from July 1981 through December 1989. Male dogs that formed cystine calculi were compared with 3 other canine populations to determine whether certain breeds were apparently at increased or decreased risk for cystine calculus formation.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, using a single restriction enzyme TaqI-multiple-probe system for HLA-DRB1-DQB1 and -DQA1, was used to determine HLA-DR and -DQ frequencies in 56 unrelated celiac patients and 47 unrelated controls from the west of Ireland. In addition, HLA-DPB1 allelic frequencies were determined in the same group of patients and controls by using the technique of enzymatic DNA amplification of the polymorphic second exon of HLA-DPB1 genes in conjunction with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probing. The results suggest that HLA-DQ rather than HLA-DR is more important in conferring susceptibility to celiac disease.

Membrane proteins have a significantly higher Trp content than do soluble proteins. This is especially true for the M and L subunits of the photosynthetic reaction center from purple bacteria. The Trp residues are not uniformly distributed through the membrane but are concentrated at the periplasmic side of the complex.

The monomer-dimer equilibria of the dimeric phospholipases A2 from Crotalus atrox and Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus venoms were examined chromatographically as a function of pH and in the presence versus absence of the essential cofactor, calcium ion. At neutral pH without calcium, the subunits of both enzymes reequilibrated sufficiently slowly that dimer and monomer were separated by size exclusion chromatography. At pH 4.

The effect of 2 minutes of apnea during endotracheal intubation on intracranial pressure (ICP), compliance, and cerebral blood volume (CBV) was studied in 19 adult dogs during normo-, hypo-, and hypercapnia. The compliance was measured from the cisterna magna in response to an intrathecal bolus injection (pressure-volume index). CBV was monitored by radiolabeled red blood cell activity.

A two gene model has been proposed to explain the inheritance of coeliac disease (CD). One gene is on chromosome 6 in the MHC complex (HLA associated). It has been suggested the second gene is located on chromosome 14, in or near the region encoding for immunoglobulin heavy chain allotypes (Gm types).

A prospective study was undertaken on a California dairy from 1984 to 1987 to examine factors associated with contact transmission of bovine leukemia virus in cows. Two approaches were used to model the probability of infection. First, the expected number of new infections per pen-month was assumed to follow a binomial distribution.

Although coeliac disease (CD) is strongly associated with the HLA alleles B8 and DR3, the genetic basis of this illness remains obscure. Recent studies show that at least two unlinked loci are involved. Most studies agree on recessivity at the HLA-unlinked locus but differ with respect to dominance or recessivity at the HLA-linked disease susceptibility locus.

An electric field of alternating polarity applied in a direction transverse to the direction of solute transport is used as the basis of a method for the separation of biological macromolecules. The method derives directly from the ability of an electric field to induce movement of a charged macromolecule and from the physics of laminar fluid flow; no adsorptive immobile phase component is involved. The method is simulated by computer for the case of solute molecules in a solvent flowing through a narrow chamber of rectangular cross section.

Brucellosis vaccination and dehorning were examined for an association with bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in heifers on a California dairy between April 1984 and June 1987. Between December 1985 and June 1986, weaned heifers were dehorned using the gouge method at the time of brucellosis vaccination. Using logistic regression, the estimated probability for a nondehorned heifer to seroconvert within three months after brucellosis vaccination (0.

A three-year prospective study involving 244 calves was undertaken on a California dairy to evaluate the protective role of colostral antibodies against bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in calves. Calves were followed from birth to the time they left their individual hutch (TLIH), at about 90 days of age. The probability of being infected at TLIH and the daily risk of infection between birth and TLIH were modelled using the logistic and the Cox models, respectively.

Based on a study of 20 medical departments (general surgery, internal medicine, radiology) an analysis is presented of variables which may account for differences in work satisfaction. The results show: (a) (experienced) work load correlates negatively with work satisfaction; (b) satisfied physicians define their medical domain more broadly than dissatisfied physicians. Besides, they do not regard their salary as an important aspect of their work.

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedures provide size-exclusion chromatography with sufficient speed that the elution characteristics of mixtures of interacting macromolecules are potentially determined by the kinetics of association and dissociation. However, few studies have yet addressed the consequences of interaction kinetics on HPLC analyses or evaluated the potential application of HPLC methods for the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of macromolecular interaction kinetics. An earlier simulation of small-zone chromatography of interacting molecules (Stevens, F.
