A personal recollection of the development of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) into a structure-determination technique is presented. Because of confusion in the theoretical explanation of the 'Kronig structure', now called EXAFS, the extended XAFS, its explanation remained unresolved for about 40 years. As I was introduced to the EXAFS phenomenon by Farrel Lytle and saw his impressive data, the thought came to me that scattering of the photoelectron from surrounding atoms could be the mechanism of the effect.

Cortical synaptic circuitry develops rapidly in the second postnatal week, simultaneous with experience-dependent turnover of dendritic spines. To relate the emergence of sensory maps to synaptogenesis, we recorded synaptic potentials evoked by whisker deflection in layer 2/3 neurons from postnatal day (P) 12 to 20. The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab has used a sign-selected neutrino beam to perform a search for the lepton number violating process nu(mu)e(-)-->mu(-)nu(e), and to measure the cross section of the standard model inverse muon decay process nu(mu)e(-)-->mu(-)nu(e). NuTeV measures the inverse muon decay asymptotic cross-section slope sigma/E to be (13.8 +/- 1.

Objective: The authors assessed frontotemporal function in patients with geriatric depression, a debilitating and increasingly prevalent disorder that has not been examined with brain activation paradigms.

Method: Six depressed elderly patients and five healthy comparison subjects underwent high-sensitivity [(15)O]H(2)O positron emission tomography scans during a paced word generation task and a resting condition.

Results: Bilateral activation deficits were noted in the dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus and hippocampus of the depressed geriatric patients relative to the comparison subjects.

Management of contaminated dredged material is a significant challenge in the Port of New York and New Jersey as a result of more stringent regional ocean placement regulations with escalating costs for upland placement. One component of an overall management plan can be the application of a decontamination technology followed by creation of a product suitable for beneficial use. This concept is the focus of a project now being carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, the US Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, the US Department of Energy, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and regional university groups that have included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Stevens Institute of Technology.

Background: Tissue remodeling depends on mesenchymal cells (fibroblasts and myofibroblasts) and is a prominent feature of chronic renal-transplant rejection. It is not known whether the mesenchymal cells that participate in remodeling originate locally or from circulating precursor cells.

Functional neuroimaging allows the non-invasive identification of distributed patterns of human brain activity associated with perceptual, congnitive, emotional and behavioral processes, in health and disease. Work in this field is methodologically intensive, requiring an interdisciplinary team of scientists to develop and apply rapidly advancing techniques. We report on the extraction of the structure functions F2 and DeltaxF(3) = xF(nu)(3)-xF(nu;)(3) from CCFR nu(mu)-Fe and nu;(mu)-Fe differential cross sections. The extraction is performed in a physics model-independent (PMI) way. This first measurement of DeltaxF(3), which is useful in testing models of heavy charm production, is higher than current theoretical predictions.

In two experiments, we evaluated the memory characteristics of real and imagined events as they changed over time. Memories of real events were richer than memories of imagined events, and memories of recent events were richer than of events from a week earlier. These differences interacted such that memories of real events performed in week 1 were very similar to memories of events that were imagined in week 2.

Transit time and trailing time in pulsed spin-labeling perfusion imaging are likely to be modulated by local blood flow changes, such as those accompanying brain activation. The majority of transit/trailing time is due to the passage of the tagged blood bolus through the arteriole/capillary regions, because of lower blood flow velocity in these regions. Changes of transit/trailing time during activation could affect the quantification of CBF in functional neuroimaging studies, and are therefore important to characterize.

In patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis, air trapping as evidenced by expiratory high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is not specific for a given stage of disease. Air trapping can occur at the level of the secondary lobule, as well as in distributions suggesting sublobular, subsegmental, and segmental involvement. While air trapping can be a nonspecific finding, it is a common feature in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis and is a supportive diagnostic finding.

The brain's response to a direct immune challenge was examined by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Lipopolysaccharide (bacterial endotoxin) injected acutely into rat striatum induced mRNA expression for inhibitory factor kappaBalpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-6, IL-12 p35, inducible nitric oxide synthase, IL-1 receptor antagonist, and the type 1 IL-1 receptor. A perfusion-based event-related functional MRI method for the study of brain activation is presented. In this method, cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured using a recently developed multislice arterial spin-labeling (ASL) perfusion imaging method with rapid spiral scanning. Temporal resolution of the perfusion measurement was substantially improved by employing intertrial subtraction and stimulus-shifting schemes.
