Three hundred and twenty-one consecutive couples were investigated for infertility at Hvidovre University Hospital in the period from November 1977 to June 1985. The male partners were evaluated in two ways: the classical semen analysis, and the ability of sperm to penetrate fresh hen egg white, the P-test. A Cox regression analysis was used to describe the relation between these variables and fecundability, i.

Using the Cox proportional hazard regression model on one material (group I = 765, 1950 to 1951) we have identified four variables of semen analysis with significant prognostic information about fertility. The four variables were combined into a model for establishing the probability of the individual male to achieve pregnancy as a function of time. This model is tested first on another material (group II = 321, 1977 to 1985).

The relationship between male infertility and the pepsinogen C content in semen has been investigated. The activation of the seminal pepsinogen C in the vagina has been studied under physiological conditions. Samples of semen from 48 vasectomized males and from 46 males of infertile couples were analyzed for pepsinogen C by radioimmunoassay.

Between 1979 and 1985, 25 consecutive, unselected women (age 28-40 years, median 34) underwent microsurgical tubo-tubal anastomosis for reversal of sterilization. The overall pregnancy rate was 44%. The incidence of pregnancy was correlated to the tubal length after reversal.

A method combining Janus green B and Thymol blue stains the anterior part of the head, the nuclear membrane, middle piece, and tail of spermatozoa light green and the nucleus deep purple. The method provides excellent stained preparations for the evaluation of sperm morphology by phase contrast microscopy. It produces significantly less abnormal spermatozoa compared with the Papanicolaou stain.

In recent years prostaglandins have been used to induce abortion. The effect is due to the ability of the prostaglandins to cause uterine contractions. Intraamniotic hypertonic saline interrupts pregnancy by terminating the foetus and destroying the placenta.
