Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an important emerging infectious disease which caused by SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV), and the study of its pathogenesis is needed for the treatment and prevention of this disease. To study the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV using reverse genetics technology, by in vitro ligation using 7 contiguous cDNAs that span the entire genome of the SARS-CoV BJ01 strain, a genomic full-length cDNA was assembled, then using T7 RiboMAX Large Scale RNA Production Systems with the genomic full-length cDNA as template, the RNA transcript was attained. The typical SARS-CoV-resulted cell pathogenic effects were observed when RNA transcript was electroporated into Vero E6 cells.

The relationships between variables in a proposed model for the quality of nursing care provided in the home were examined using a cross-sectional correlational design. Sixty patients discharged from a home-care agency were interviewed in their homes using instruments to measure the model's 7 variables. It was proposed that nursing care provided is related to 3 aspects of the interpersonal process--affective support, health information adequacy, and decisional control--and that these 3 variables are related to 3 outcomes--adherence, symptoms, and well-being.

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV)-induced, host cell apoptosis mediates secondary necrosis by an ill-understood process. In this study, redspotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) is shown to induce mitochondria-mediated necrotic cell death in GL-av cells (fish cells) via cytochrome c release, and anti-apoptotic proteins are shown to protect these cells from death. Western blots revealed that cytochrome c release coincided with disruption of mitochondrial ultrastructure and preceded necrosis, but did not correlate with caspases activation.

Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is clinically heterogeneous with prognostically and biologically distinct subtypes. Although racial differences in frequency of different types of childhood ALL have been reported, many are confounded by selected or limited population samples. The Malaysia-Singapore (MA-SPORE) Leukemia Study Group provided a unique platform for the study of the frequency of major subgroups of childhood ALL in a large cohort of unselected multiethnic Asian children.

The adsorption and oxidation of 1-butanol in alkaline media on a platinum electrode were investigated mainly by EQCM and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the electrooxidation of 1-butanol is closely relative to solution acidity. Since no chemically adsorbed species, such as CO, were evidenced by in situ FTIR spectroscopy, the adsorption of 1-butanol or its dissociative products on Pt surface is suggested by EQCM and CV data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of a fusion gene (hVEGF(165)-FH) on preventing restenosis in injured carotid arteries of rabbits.
  • Researchers created a plasmid vector to express the fusion gene and then tested it on rabbits, injecting different groups with either the fusion gene or a control.
  • Results indicated that the experimental groups showed significantly less restenosis compared to controls at both one and three weeks post-treatment, despite no major differences in blood clotting metrics among the groups.

Either phagocytosis of macrophage to pathogen or pathogen-induced invasion into non-professional phagocytes, such as epithelial cells, require actin cytoskeletal rearrangements and remodeling of the plasma membrane, which are regulated precisely by monogeric GTPase and the correlated proteins. As a key signaling molecule in the cell, phosphotidicphospholipase D (PLD) regulates or interacts directly with cellular actin cytoskeleton rearrangement. Phospholipase D plays an important role in FcgammaRI and C-reactive protein-mediated phagocytosis and phosphorylated cofilin, a ADF (actin depolymerizing factor) is able to bind to phospholipase D and stimulate it; meanwhile, the Listeria-induced actin cytoskeleton rearrangement during the infection is controlled by the phosphorylation of cofilin.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and the viral nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) plays a crucial role in viral latency. Three EBNA1 subtypes, P-ala, V-thr and V-val have been detected from healthy carriers in Guangzhou area. A close relation of V-val EBNA1 with NPC was suggested by its preference to infect NPC cells.

Three commercialized ELISA kits for the detection of antibodies to the non-structural proteins (NSPs) of FMD virus were compared, using sera from uninfected, vaccinated, challenged and naturally infected pigs. The kinetics of the antibody response to NSPs was compared on sequential serum samples in swine from challenge studies and outbreaks. The results showed that ELISA A (UBI) and ELISA B (CEDI) had better sensitivity than that of the 3ABC recombinant protein-based ELISA C (Chekit).
