Imaging with CT, MRI, or fluorodeoxyglucose F 18-positron emission tomography is often an important complement to laryngoscopy for diagnosis and management of laryngeal pathology. At most centers, CT is the most popular modality for general laryngeal imaging given its widespread availability, ease of acquisition, and familiarity to clinicians, whereas MRI and positron emission tomography are used as problem-solving tools. Frequent indications for laryngeal imaging include cancer staging, suspected submucosal abnormalities, vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal trauma, and laryngotracheal stenosis.

Although cerebral vascular malformations are traditionally considered to be congenital lesions, they often become clinically evident in the 3rd to 4th decades of life, leading to the assumption of a long silent clinical period. The P2X(7) receptor (P2X(7)R) is an ATP-gated ion channel expressed by monocytes and macrophages. To directly address the role of this receptor in interleukin (IL)-1 beta post-translational processing, we have generated a P2X(7)R-deficient mouse line. P2X(7)R(-/-) macrophages respond to lipopolysaccharide and produce levels of cyclooxygenase-2 and pro-IL-1 beta comparable with those generated by wild-type cells.

Purpose: DNA damage-inducible genes, such as gadd153, gadd45, p21 and c-jun, have previously been shown to be induced by the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin. A multidisciplinary audit evaluating the quality of care of patients with a primary diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was performed at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The audit served to evaluate the treatment and care of diabetic patients, in both the inpatient and ambulatory care settings, and also to identify interaction problems involving patient care among physicians, nurses, dieticians, and social workers.
