The model solution gives analytical mathematical expressions for average values of quantities that can be measured experimentally. The reaction of 1 with HBF4 leads to the trihydride-dihydrogen complex [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(eta2-H2)(NCMe)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (2), which has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on a model complex. Complex 2 reacts with imines such as tBuN=CHPh or PhN=CHPh to afford amine complexes [Ir2(mu-H)(mu-Pz)2H2(NCMe){L}(PiPr3)2]BF4 (L = NH(tBu)CH2Ph, 3; NH(Ph)CH2Ph, 4) through a sequence of proton- and hydride-transfer steps.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn the presence of ligands such as acetonitrile, ethylene, or propylene, the Ir(I) complex [Ir(1,2,5,6-eta-C8H12)(NCMe)(PMe3)]BF4 (1) transforms into the Ir(III) derivatives [Ir(1-kappa-4,5,6-eta-C8H12)(NCMe)(L)(PMe3)]BF4 (L = NCMe, 2; eta2-C2H4, 3; eta2-C3H6, 4), respectively, through a sequence of C-H oxidative addition and insertion elementary steps. The rate of this transformation depends on the nature of L and, in the case of NCMe, the pseudo-first-order rate constants display a dependence upon ligand concentration suggesting the formation of five-coordinate reaction intermediates. A similar reaction between 1 and vinyl acetate affords the Ir(III) complex [Ir(1-kappa-4,5,6-eta-C8H12){kappa-O-eta2-OC(Me)OC2H3}(PMe3)]BF4 (7) via the isolable five-coordinate Ir(I) compound [Ir(1,2,5,6-eta-C8H12){kappa-O-eta2-OC(Me)OC2H3}(PMe3)]BF4 (6).

The loss of the cholinergic function in Alzheimer's disease patients, along with the well-known memory enhancing effect of nicotine, emphasizes the role of cholinergic signalling in memory functions. The hippocampus, a key structure in learning and memory, is endowed with nAChRs localized at pre- and postsynaptic levels.

Some hemorheological parameters constitute risk factors for ischemic cardiovascular events. Most of these hemorheological factors are determined by the erythrocyte intrinsic properties and the high molecular weight plasmatic proteins, especially fibrinogen. In order to ascertain whether a decrease in BMI associated to a LCD, is accompanied by changes in the hemorheological parameters, we determined in 41 morbid obese subjects (32 female, 9 male aged 33+/-10 years) BMI, glucose, plasmatic lipids and apolipoproteins, fibrinogen, blood viscosity (Brookfield viscosimeter), plasma viscosity (Fresenius capillary viscosimeter), erythrocyte aggregation (Myrenne aggregometer), hematocrit and erythrocyte indexes, before starting on a LCD and 1 and 3 months after. During the first month obese subjects received a very low caloric diet (VLCD) (Modifast) providing 458 kcal per day.

The association of hemorheological alterations with morbid obesity remains a question of debate. In order to ascertain whether morbid obese subjects show certain hemorheological alterations which might be involved in the higher thrombotic risk which characterizes these subjects, we determine glucose, plasma lipids, apolipoproteins, fibrinogen, hematocrit, blood viscosity (Brookfield DVIII viscosimeter), both at native and corrected hematocrit of 45%, plasma viscosity (Fresenius capillary viscosimeter), erythrocyte aggregation (Myrenne aggregometer), both at stasis and at 3 s(-1) at 45% hematocrit and erythrocyte indexes in 41 morbid obese subjects (32 female, 9 male aged 33+/-10 years), and in a well matched non-obese control group (40 female, 15 male, aged 32+/-10 years). Mean BMI in the morbid obese group was 44.

Background: Although new immunosuppressive agents have improved the results of renal transplants (RTs), long-term graft loss remains high. We evaluated the impact of different immunosuppressive regimens on patient and graft survival.
Methods: Data from 3365 patients receiving cadaver RTs in Spain during the years 1990, 1994 and 1998 were retrospectively analysed.
During long-term potentiation (LTP) at mossy fibre-granule cell synapses in rat cerebellum synaptic transmission and granule cell intrinsic excitability are enhanced. Although it is clear that changes in granule cell excitability are mediated postsynaptically, there is as yet no direct evidence for the site and mechanism of changes in transmission. To approach this problem, evoked postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) and miniature synaptic currents (mEPSCs) were recorded by patch-clamp in cerebellar slices obtained from P17-P23 rats.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Although studies have shown that mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) with cyclosporine (CsA) and prednisone can reduce the incidence of acute rejection and increase the half-life of the graft, the effects of MMF on established chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) are controversial.
Methods: We studied 121 patients with biopsy-proven CAN, 59 treated with CsA and prednisone and 62 treated with triple-drug therapy with azathioprine. At inclusion, each group received 2 g per day of MMF and azathioprine was stopped.
Background And Objective: To determine vascular risk factor (VRF) profiles in transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke.
Patients And Method: We studied 239 patients with TIA and 1,473 ischemic stroke patients included in a prospective stroke registry over a 10-year period.
Results: Main VRF were: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation.
A patient with severe vomiting following gastric banding developed Wernicke's encephalopathy. All neurological disorders disappeared with thiamine treatment. This complication may be prevented by keen awareness, early diagnosis and treatment, in patients with persistent vomiting.
