Thyroid disease in ANCA-associated vasculitis: a clinical and epidemiological study.

Objectives: To describe clinical and laboratory characteristics and outcomes in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and thyroid disease (TD). We also aimed to calculate incidence and identify predictors of TD in two large cohorts of patients with AAV.

Methods: The study comprised 644 patients with AAV in a population-based cohort from southern Sweden (n=325) and a cohort from a specialised vasculitis centre in Cambridge, UK (n=319).

Not all mindfulness is equal: certain facets of mindfulness have important implications for well-being and mental health across the lifespan.

The connections between the five facets of mindfulness, well-being, and mental health across the lifespan have traditionally been investigated using variable-centered approaches. Less research has investigated these relationships from a person-centered, profile-based approach. In this work, we aimed to identify the profiles of mindfulness in a Canadian lifespan sample (14 to 90 years of age) and investigate how these profiles compared on age, well-being, and mental health.

Using implementation science to decrease variation and high opioid administration in a surgical ICU.

Background: High doses and prolonged duration of opioids are associated with tolerance, dependence, and increased mortality. Unfortunately, despite recent efforts to curb outpatient opioid prescribing because of the ongoing epidemic, utilization remains high in the intensive care setting, with intubated patients commonly receiving infusions with a potency much higher than doses required to achieve pain control. We attempted to use implementation science techniques to monitor and reduce excessive opioid prescribing in ventilated patients in our surgical intensive care unit (SICU).

Breast density knowledge and willingness to delay treatment for pre-operative breast cancer imaging among women with a personal history of breast cancer.

Background: Following a breast cancer diagnosis, it is uncertain whether women's breast density knowledge influences their willingness to undergo pre-operative imaging to detect additional cancer in their breasts. We evaluated women's breast density knowledge and their willingness to delay treatment for pre-operative testing.

Methods: We surveyed women identified in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium aged ≥ 18 years, with first breast cancer diagnosed within the prior 6-18 months, who had at least one breast density measurement within the 5 years prior to their diagnosis.

Protocol for nanoscale thermal mapping of electronic devices using atomic force microscopy with phase change material.

In this protocol, we present a facile nanoscale thermal mapping technique for electronic devices by use of atomic force microscopy and a phase change material GeSbTe. We describe steps for GeSbTe thin film coating, GeSbTe temperature calibration, thermal mapping by varying heater power, and thermal mapping by varying heating time. The protocol can be applied for resolving surface temperatures of various operational microelectronic devices with a nanoscale precision.

Testing the Resilience, Physiological Plasticity and Mechanisms Underlying Upper Temperature Limits of Antarctic Marine Ectotherms.

Antarctic marine ectotherms live in the constant cold and are characterised by limited resilience to elevated temperature. Here we tested three of the central paradigms underlying this resilience. Firstly, we assessed the ability of eight species, from seven classes representing a range of functional groups, to survive, for 100 to 303 days, at temperatures 0 to 4 °C above previously calculated long-term temperature limits.

Changes in the number of new takeaway food outlets associated with adoption of management zones around schools: A natural experimental evaluation in England.

By the end of 2017, 35 local authorities (LAs) across England had adopted takeaway management zones (or "exclusion zones") around schools as a means to curb proliferation of new takeaways. In this nationwide, natural experimental study, we evaluated the impact of management zones on takeaway retail, including unintended displacement of takeaways to areas immediately beyond management zones, and impacts on chain fast-food outlets. We used uncontrolled interrupted time series analyses to estimate changes from up to six years pre- and post-adoption of takeaway management zones around schools.

Delays in blood collection and drug toxicology results among crash-involved drivers arrested for impaired driving.

Objective: The concentration of drugs in a driver's system can change between an impaired driving arrest or crash and the collection of a biological specimen for drug testing. Accordingly, delays in specimen collection can result in the loss of critical information that has the potential to affect impaired driving prosecution. The objectives of the study were: (1) to identify factors that influence the time between impaired-driving violations and specimen collections (time-to-collection) among crash-involved drivers, and (2) to consider how such delays affect measured concentrations of drugs, particularly with respect to common drug per se limits.

Stripping versus ligation of vas deferens in microscopic denervation of spermatic cord in men with chronic orchialgia: A multicenter study.

Background: Microdenervation of the spermatic cord (MSCD) is an effective treatment modality for men with intractable scrotal content pain. For patients not interested in preserving fertility, some centers advocate ligation of the vas during denervation, while others prefer stripping of the vas deferens to preserve the vasal artery, hence preserving vasculature to the testis and possibly decreasing post-operative congestion pain.

Objective: To compare outcomes of patients with chronic orchialgia, who underwent MSCD by either stripping or ligating the vas deferens.

However, conventional chemical strategies face challenges in regulating the four electron-proton processes of OER. Herein, we investigate alpha-manganese dioxide (α-MnO) with typical Mn-O-Mn-HO motifs as a model for adjusting proton coupling.

Rapid Metabolism Underlying Subtherapeutic Serum Levels of Atypical Antipsychotics Preceding Clozapine Treatment: A Retrospective Analysis of Real-World Data.

Introduction: Adequate antipsychotic treatment intensity is required before diagnosing resistant schizophrenia and initiating clozapine treatment. We aimed to investigate potential rapid drug metabolism underlying low dose-adjusted serum concentration (CD) of non-clozapine atypical antipsychotics preceding clozapine treatment.

Methods: Patients using non-clozapine, atypical antipsychotics (aripiprazole, risperidone, olanzapine, or quetiapine) within 1 year before starting clozapine were included in this study from a therapeutic drug monitoring service in Oslo, Norway, between 2005 and 2023.

Risk factors for colonization with extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales among hospitalized patients in Guatemala: An Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals (ARCH) study.

Objectives: The spread of extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESCrE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) has resulted in increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs worldwide. To identify the factors associated with ESCrE and CRE colonization within hospitals, we enrolled hospitalized patients at a regional hospital located in Guatemala.

Methods: Stool samples were collected from randomly selected patients using a cross-sectional study design (March-September, 2021), and samples were tested for the presence of ESCrE and CRE.

Catatonia associated with pediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome.

Objective: To ascertain the presence of catatonia in cases of pediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (PPCMS).

Method: A systematic review of PPCMS case reports of patients aged 0-17 years with sufficient clinical information to extract catatonic phenomena was undertaken following PRISMA guidelines. Standardized catatonia rating scales were applied to selected cases retrospectively to ascertain whether diagnostic criteria for catatonia were met.
