A rare case of cutaneous granular cell tumor with unusual Melan-A expression in a child.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare, indolent neoplasms classically characterized by eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, infiltrations of polygonal cells in the collagenous stroma, and pustulo-ovoid bodies of Milian. We describe a case of a 10-year-old female presenting with a GCT of the upper arm, remarkable for positive Melan-A expression without additional melanocytic features. The differentiation between granular cells versus melanocytic neoplasms carries significant implications for clinical management, and such diagnoses should be considered carefully in the setting of unusual immunophenotypes.

A muscarinic receptor antagonist reverses multiple indices of diabetic peripheral neuropathy: preclinical and clinical studies using oxybutynin.

Preclinical studies indicate that diverse muscarinic receptor antagonists, acting via the M sub-type, promote neuritogenesis from sensory neurons in vitro and prevent and/or reverse both structural and functional indices of neuropathy in rodent models of diabetes. We sought to translate this as a potential therapeutic approach against structural and functional indices of diabetic neuropathy using oxybutynin, a muscarinic antagonist approved for clinical use against overactive bladder. Studies were performed using sensory neurons maintained in vitro, rodent models of type 1 or type 2 diabetes and human subjects with type 2 diabetes and confirmed neuropathy.

Impact of influenza and pneumococcal vaccines on HIV persistence and immune dynamics during suppressive antiretroviral therapy.

Objective: We sought to determine if standard influenza and pneumococcal vaccines can be used to stimulate HIV reservoirs during antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Design: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of two clinically recommended vaccines (influenza and pneumococcal).

Methods: Persons with HIV on ART ( N  = 54) were enrolled in the clinical trial.

Introduction: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is commonly used to treat men with locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Men receiving ADT experience numerous side effects and frequently report unmet supportive care needs. An essential part of quality cancer care is survivorship care.

Background: As the population of people with HIV ages, concerns over managing age-related comorbidities, polypharmacy, immune recovery, and drug-drug interactions while maintaining viral suppression have arisen. We present pooled TANGO and SALSA efficacy and safety results dichotomized by age (< 50 and ≥ 50 years).

Methods: Week 48 data from the open-label phase 3 TANGO and SALSA trials evaluating switch to once-daily dolutegravir/lamivudine (DTG/3TC) fixed-dose combination vs continuing current antiretroviral regimen (CAR) were pooled.

A single laccase acts as a key component of environmental sensing in a broad host range fungal pathogen.

Secreted laccases are important enzymes on a broad ecological scale for their role in mediating plant-microbe interactions, but within ascomycete fungi these enzymes have been primarily associated with melanin biosynthesis. In this study, a putatively secreted laccase, Sslac2, was characterized from the broad-host-range plant pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, which is largely unpigmented and is not dependent on melanogenesis for plant infection. Gene knockouts of Sslac2 demonstrate wide ranging developmental phenotypes and are functionally non-pathogenic.

To describe the epidemiologic characteristics of cases of coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis during the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC analyzed case surveillance data for 2019-2021.

Background: Community-based violence intervention (CVI) programs are considered important strategies for preventing community violence and promoting health and safety. Mixed and inconclusive results from some prior CVI evaluations, as well as our general lack of understanding about the reasons for such varied findings, may be explained in part by misalignment of program theories of change and evaluation measures. Furthermore, most prior evaluations have focused solely on deficit-based outcomes; this narrow focus is inconsistent with the premise of CVI and may fail to capture improvements in health and well-being that are on the hypothesized pathway from intervention to violence reduction.

Proposing a new history of grief's medicalisation: A critical discourse analysis.

Conceptualisations of grief have transformed significantly in recent decades, from an experience accepted and expressed in community spaces to a diagnosable clinical phenomenon. Narratives of this transformation tend to focus on grief's relationship to major depression, or on recent nosological changes. This paper examines the possibility of a new narrative for medicalisation by grounding in the networks of language and power created around 'grief' through a critical discourse analysis of psy-discipline articles (n = 70) published between 1975 and 1995.

Calculation of livestock biomass and value by province in Indonesia: Key information to support policymaking.

Accurate estimations of the biomass and value of livestock in Indonesia are of great use in supporting investment decisions by the public and private sector and as a basis for estimating the losses due to animal disease. Biomass and the partial direct use value for key livestock species (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens) for all provinces of Indonesia were derived from secondary data using a novel spreadsheet-based model. Using beef cattle as an example, we also explored the use of a herd dynamics model to validate base data on populations and productivity used to generate biomass values, and these were found to be generally robust.

Distinguishing emotional distress from mental disorder in primary care: a qualitative exploration of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire.

Dermatophytoses are fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that affect approximately 25% of the global population. Occlusive clothing, living in a hot humid environment, poor hygiene, proximity to animals, and crowded living conditions are important risk factors. Dermatophyte infections are named for the anatomic area they infect, and include tinea corporis, cruris, capitis, barbae, faciei, pedis, and manuum.

We optimized a PptT assay, used it to screen 422,740 compounds, and identified raltitrexed, an antineoplastic antimetabolite, as the most potent PptT inhibitor yet reported.

Ultrafast Nanodrum-on-Chip Pixels.

Environmentally friendly, ultrafast display pixels of micrometer sizes are fabricated with nanometer-thick gold films and Si/SiO wafers. The color displayed is due to both the plasmon response of the gold film and the optical interference from the Fabry-Peerot cavity formed by the underlying silicon substrate, the semitransparent gold film and the air gap between them. When an electric potential is applied to the gold film, the electrostatic force induces an attraction between the gold film and the silicon wafer.

Providing Clinical Psychology Training and Trauma-Focused Treatment via Telehealth During COVID-19.

To slow the spread of COVID-19 many mental health providers transitioned to telehealth delivery of trauma-focused treatment for maltreated children. However, these providers faced myriad challenges, including equitable access to equipment and technical demands of telehealth software. Training clinics overseeing pre-doctoral clinical psychology interns experienced the added challenge of providing quality supervision and training via telehealth.

Maintaining the quality of vaccines through the use of standards: Current challenges and future opportunities.

An international hybrid meeting held 21-22 June 2023 in Ottawa, Canada brought together regulators, scientists, and industry experts to discuss a set of principles and best practices in the development and implementation of standards. Although the use of international standards (ISs) and international units (IUs) has been an essential part of ensuring human and animal vaccine quality in the past decades, the types and uses of standards have expanded with technological advances in manufacture and testing of vaccines. The needs of stakeholders are evolving in response to the ever-increasing complexity, diversity, and number of vaccine products as well as increasing efforts to replace animal-based potency tests with in vitro assays that measure relevant quality attributes.

Posttraumatic cognition change trajectories in veterans with PTSD who completed an intensive Cognitive Processing Therapy treatment program.

Negative posttraumatic cognitions (NPCs) have been linked to symptoms of PTSD and are an important target of cognitive behavioral treatments for PTSD, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Yet to be explored are the different change trajectories of NPCs during CPT. Knowledge of such change trajectories could elucidate common NPC change processes within CPT and their relationship to PTSD symptom severity.
