Introduction: Over a half century ago, a component of glucagon was found to have potent gastrointestinal effects. Shortly after proglucagon was sequenced, its component peptides were characterized, and glucagon-like polypeptide-2 (GLP-2) was noted to have the most potent intestinotrophic properties improving fluid and electrolyte balance in experimental animals and humans.

Areas Covered: Glucagon-like polypeptide-1 (GLP-1) slows small intestinal motility more effectively, but its intestinotrophic properties are weaker.

We deploy optical microscopy with and without an applied magnetic field to characterize the three-dimensional morphology and measure the line tension of twist disclinations in twisted nematic liquid crystal (LC) sample cells. Twist disclinations are generated by quenching the LC, 5CB (4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl), into the nematic phase; 5CB is confined between substrates with in-plane anchoring directions perpendicular to one another. The disclinations form loops separating domains of opposite twist handedness.

We study the director configurations of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) droplets with homeotropic anchoring in a magnetic field and report observation of a magnetic-field-driven transition from a deformed radial to an axial-with-defect configuration. Magnetic-field-induced transitions in NLC droplets differ fundamentally from the traditional planar Freedericksz transition due to the spherical droplet geometry and resulting topological defect. This transition has been studied theoretically, but the director configurations and mechanism of defect evolution in an applied magnetic field have yet to be observed experimentally.

High-precision nanomaterials to entrap DNA-binding molecules are sought after for applications such as controlled drug delivery and scaffold-assisted structural biology. Here, we engineered protein-DNA cocrystals to serve as scaffolds for DNA-binding molecules. The designed cocrystals, isoreticular cocrystals, contain DNA-binding protein and cognate DNA blocks where the DNA-DNA junctions stack end-to-end.

Introduction: Dietary intake of whole grains and legumes and adequate physical activity (PA) have been associated with reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A single-blinded, two-arm, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial was implemented to evaluate the impact of a 12-week dietary intervention of rice bran + navy bean supplementation and PA education on metabolite profiles and the gut microbiome among individuals at high risk of CRC.

We evaluated the application and clinical impact of multi-gene pharmacogenetic testing in oncology palliative medicine. In a single-arm pilot trial, cancer patients with uncontrolled pain were assessed in a palliative medicine clinic at baseline and received pharmacogenetic testing. Results were used as applicable up to the final visit (day 30).

Purpose: Approximately 30% of patients with cancer who have pain have symptomatic improvement within 1 month using conventional pain management strategies. Engaging clinical pharmacists in palliative medicine (PM) and use of pharmacogenomic testing may improve cancer pain management.

Methods: Adult patients with cancer with uncontrolled pain had baseline assessments performed by PM providers using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale.

Anthropometric indices are widely used to assess the health and nutritional status of children. We tested the hypothesis that the 2007 World Health Organization (WHO) reference for assessment of malnutrition in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) overestimates the prevalence of severe malnutrition when compared to a previously constructed SCA-specific reference. We applied the WHO and SCA-specific references to children with SCA aged 5-12 years living in northern Nigeria (Primary Prevention of Stroke in Children with SCA in sub-Saharan Africa (SPRING) trial) to determine the difference in prevalence of severe malnutrition defined as body mass index (BMI) -score <-3 and whether severe malnutrition was associated with lower mean hemoglobin levels or abnormal transcranial Doppler measurements (>200 cm/s).

Background: Most science categories are hierarchically organized, with various high-level divisions comprising numerous subtypes. If we suppose that one's goal is to teach students to classify at the high level, past research has provided mixed evidence about whether an effective strategy is to require simultaneous classification learning of the subtypes. This past research was limited, however, either because authentic science categories were not tested, or because the procedures did not allow participants to form strong associations between subtype-level and high-level category names.

Background: Noncompliance in use of anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be a factor in medication failure. Few studies have evaluated the contribution of depressive symptoms to medication noncompliance in anti-TNF therapies.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed in a single-center tertiary care IBD center for patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis starting anti-TNF therapy over a 2-year period.
