Hiring new dermatology faculty at academic medical centers (AMCs) can be a difficult process. Academic dermatology departments, however, must have the financial freedom to nimbly respond to the needs of their community. To determine the downstream revenue and profitability produced by dermatology faculty, a retrospective review of charges and expenses downstream of professional services was performed to assess dermatology faculty and nurse practitioners from January 2019 to December 2020 at a single AMC in the southern United States.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze a nationwide database of malpractice lawsuits involving pediatric surgical patients to identify contributing factors in liability claims.

Methods: Using the CRICO (Controlled Risk Insurance Company Strategies' Comparative Benchmarking System) database, malpractice claims involving patients ≤18 y old were reviewed from 2008 to 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression.

Background: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a potential adjunct in pediatric trauma patients with noncompressible truncal and pelvic hemorrhage; however, there are little data evaluating the anatomic considerations of REBOA in children. Telehealth expands the capacity to care for patients in rural and underserved settings. Gelsolin (GSN) has been implicated in inflammatory reactions in asthmatic patients and may be a marker for acute or chronic reactions in synovial tissue. Detection of increased levels of GSN in synovial fluid could differentiate between aseptic loosening (low GSN) and hypersensitivity reaction (high GSN). Synovial fluid from both knees of 7 cadaver specimens with unilateral TKA was analyzed using ELISA for GSN levels.

Background: Arginine-depleting therapy with pegylated arginine deiminase (ADI-PEG20) was reported to have activity in advanced melanoma in early phase I-II trial, and clinical trials are currently underway in other cancers. The single-chain 28 kDa human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) protease catalytic domain containing the A143Q mutation has been kinetically and conformationally characterized. The specific activity of the HCMV A143Q protease (HCMVp) increases as the protease concentration increases, suggesting that this protease oligomerizes at high protein concentration to form a more active species. Both cross-linking and light-scattering studies of HCMVp show the existence of a homodimer with an apparent molecular mass of 56 kDa under low ionic strength and high protein concentration.

Net photosynthesis, growth, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation absorbance were determined for the first leaf of Cucurbita pepo L. exposed to two levels of UV-B irradiation and a UV-B radiation-free control treatment. Absorbance by extracted flavonoid pigments and other UV-B radiation-absorbing compounds from the first leaves increased with time and level of UV-B radiation impinging on leaf surfaces.
