The Many Roles of Cholesterol in Sepsis: A Review.

The biological functions of cholesterol are diverse, ranging from cell membrane integrity, cell membrane signaling, and immunity to the synthesis of steroid and sex hormones, vitamin D, bile acids, and oxysterols. Multiple studies have demonstrated hypocholesterolemia in sepsis, the degree of which is an excellent prognosticator of poor outcomes. However, the clinical significance of hypocholesterolemia has been largely unrecognized.

Influenza clinical testing and oseltamivir treatment in hospitalized children with acute respiratory illness, 2015-2016.

Background: Antiviral treatment is recommended for all hospitalized children with suspected or confirmed influenza, regardless of their risk profile. Few data exist on adherence to these recommendations, so we sought to determine factors associated with influenza testing and antiviral treatment in children.

Methods: Hospitalized children <18 years of age with acute respiratory illness (ARI) were enrolled through active surveillance at pediatric medical centers in seven cities between 11/1/2015 and 6/30/2016; clinical information was obtained from parent interview and chart review.

Early Residual Fluid-Free Status and Long-Term BCVA Outcomes: A Treatment Agnostic, Post Hoc Analysis of Pooled HAWK and HARRIER Data.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine associations between early residual fluid (ERF)-free status and improved long-term visual outcomes.

Design: This was a retrospective clinical cohort study from a post hoc analysis of 2 phase III clinical trials' data.

Methods: Independent of treatment allocation, patients from the multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-masked HAWK and HARRIER trials who received either brolucizumab 6 mg or aflibercept 2 mg were split into 2 cohorts depending on the presence or absence of ERF at week 12.

Clinical Influenza Testing Practices in Hospitalized Children at United States Medical Centers, 2015-2018.

At nine US hospitals that enrolled children hospitalized with acute respiratory illness (ARI) during 2015-2016 through 2017-2018 influenza seasons, 50% of children with ARI received clinician-initiated testing for influenza and 35% of cases went undiagnosed due to lack of clinician-initiated testing. Marked heterogeneity in testing practice was observed across sites.

Parathyroid Gland Autofluorescence Characteristics in Patients With Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Objective: Near-infrared imaging for intraoperative parathyroid gland (PG) detection has recently commanded significant attention. The PTeye (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) is a probe-based system for near-infrared autofluorescent evaluation of PGs. This study was designed to evaluate the capabilities of the PTeye in the setting of surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism.

Methods: We performed a systematic review, meta-analysis, trial sequential analysis (TSA), and meta-regression of RCTs to evaluate the benefit of convalescent plasma for COVID-19. The primary outcome was 28-30 day mortality.

Background: Early sexual debut among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adolescents has been associated with an increased risk of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, along with an increased risk of having multiple lifetime sexual partners, and engaging in greater frequency of sex, substance abuse, and lack of condom use. A major protective factor against early sexual debut among AI/AN youth is the familial system. Interventions aiming to improve parent-child communication and parental warmth toward adolescent sexual health topics were reported to contribute to positive youth sexual health outcomes, specifically among minority youth.

Potato consumption is not associated with elevated cardiometabolic risk in adolescent girls.

We examined the association between potato consumption in two different age periods during adolescence and risk of obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction in White and Black girls. We used data from the biracial prospective National Growth and Health Study. Average potato consumption was derived from multiple 3-d food records in two age periods, 9-11 and 9-17 years, and included white and sweet potatoes from all sources.

Corticosteroids in adult respiratory distress syndrome - an inconvenient truth?

Objectives: Recent studies have demonstrated mortality benefits from corticosteroid use in COVID-19 patients requiring respiratory support. However, clinical practice may warrant the use of corticosteroids outside the context of a clinical trial. Such data are rarely, if ever, reported.

Matriculating Students' Opinions on Cadaveric Dissection: Maintaining Tradition in Changing Times.

As medical education advances, cadaveric dissection is no longer the sole modality to teach anatomy. In light of this, there is limited data regarding how incoming medical students perceive the importance of cadaveric dissection and whether they continue to desire the experience as they consider matriculating to medical school.
