Background: LDL cholesterol has a causal role in the development of cardiovascular disease. Improved understanding of the biological mechanisms that underlie the metabolism and regulation of LDL cholesterol might help to identify novel therapeutic targets. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and inhaled steroids alter surfactant protein D (SP-D) levels: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Surfactant protein D (SP-D), an innate immune molecule, plays an important protective role during airway inflammation. Deficiency of this molecule induces emphysematous changes in murine lungs, but its significance in human COPD remains unclear.

Methods: We collected bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from 20 subjects with varying degrees of COPD (8 former smokers and 12 current smokers) and 15 asymptomatic healthy control subjects (5 never smokers, 3 remote former smokers, and 7 current smokers).

One size fits all? Race, gender and body mass index among U.S. adults.

This study examined the extent to which factors presumed to be correlated with body mass index (BMI) vary across four race- and gender-specific groups. Data were drawn from the American Changing Lives Survey to estimate separate multivariate regression models for the total study sample that included African-American males, Caucasian males, African-American females and Caucasian females. The dependant variable of interest was BMI.

Technical evaluation of radiation dose delivered in prostate cancer patients as measured by an implantable MOSFET dosimeter.

Purpose: To perform a comparison of the daily measured dose at depth in tissue with the predicted dose values from treatment plans for 29 prostate cancer patients involved in a clinical trial.

Methods And Materials: Patients from three clinical sites were implanted with one or two dosimeters in or near the prostatic capsule. The implantable device, known as the DVS, is based on a metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) detector.

Fitness costs associated with resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops are expected to delay the evolution of resistance. In a previous study where pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), larvae overwintered in outdoor insectaries, individuals from Bt-resistant strains had lower survival than individuals from Bt-susceptible strains or F1 progeny from crosses between resistant and susceptible adults. To investigate the physiological basis of such recessive cost, diapause duration was experimentally manipulated in the laboratory.

Videoconferencing is a powerful and versatile method for distance learning. Videoconferencing incorporates real-time video and audio into connections with distant sites and, when combined with simultaneous Internet transmission of high-resolution images, enables veterinary educators to expand the classroom to include students and faculty from remote sites. The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) has used videoconferencing to deliver and receive entire courses, virtual rounds, seminars, journal clubs, and small meetings and for in-house transmission from one area of the campus to another.

Psychosocial management of distress in interventional radiology patients with cancer.

Cancer patients experience a wide variety of psychosocial stresses which greatly influence their quality of life. Consistent evaluation and management of the psychosocial wellbeing of cancer patients not only improves patient outcomes but also strengthens relationships between staff and patients and increases staff satisfaction. This article will review the use of a Distress Tool to evaluate and quantify patient psychosocial distress, describe psychosocial interventions to be made within the interventional radiology clinic setting and discuss when to refer patients to an outside psychosocial professional.

Objective: We measured maternal plasma concentrations of alpha- and gamma-tocopherols and examined their relation with measures of fetal growth. We also examined the relation, controlled for associated maternal factors, of diet and supplement use to tocopherol concentrations at week 28 of gestation.

Profiling psychomotor and cognitive aging in four-way cross mice.

In part due to their genetic uniformity and stable characteristics, inbred rodents or their F1 progeny are frequently used to study brain aging. However, it is recognized that focus on a single genotype could lead to generalizations about brain aging that might not apply to the species as a whole, or to the human population. As a potential alternative to uniform genotypes, genetically heterogeneous (HET) mice, produced by a four-way cross, were tested in the current study to determine if they exhibit age-related declines in cognitive and psychomotor function similar to other rodent models of brain aging.

Objective: The single-minded 1 (SIM1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, which plays a critical role in the development of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus. SIM1-deficient mice have a hypocellular PVN and are severely obese with increased food intake.

The efficacy of TAMUS 2032 in preventing a natural outbreak of colibacillosis in broiler chickens in floor pens.

A 42-d floor pen study was conducted with broiler chickens comparing the effects on bird performance of 12 ppm TAMUS 2032 (also known as BT) and 55 ppm bacitracin methylene disalicyclate (BMD) when fed alone or in combination with 99 ppm monensin (MON). Unmedicated and 99 ppm MON treatments were included in the study design. Beginning on d 22 of study, birds in all 6 treatments were subjected to a modulated house temperature and airflow to mimic conditions conducive to outbreaks of colibacillosis.

A POMC variant implicates beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in the control of human energy balance.

The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) plays a critical role in the control of energy balance. Of its two pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived ligands, alpha- and beta-MSH, the majority of attention has focused on alpha-MSH, partly reflecting the absence of beta-MSH in rodents. We screened the POMC gene in 538 patients with severe, early-onset obesity and identified five unrelated probands who were heterozygous for a rare missense variant in the region encoding beta-MSH, Tyr221Cys.

Grb-2-associated binder (Gab)2 is a scaffolding adaptor protein that has been reported to promote growth factor and cytokine receptor signal transduction, but inhibit TCR-mediated signaling events. In this study, we show that ligation of CD28 by its natural ligand B7-1/CD80, induces tyrosine phosphorylation of Gab2 and its coassociation with Src homology phosphatase (SHP)-2 and class IA PI3K in Jurkat cells.
