Heterogeneity for 5'nucleotidase has been demonstrated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia [12]. The enzyme is not detectable in the lymphocytes from the majority of patients with this disorder, but normal and even supranormal levels are found in some cases [17]. In the present studies, the properties of this ecto-nucleotidase were investigated in unhomogenized lymphocytes isolated from the blood of normal subjects and patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The diagnostic value of the serum lactic dehydrogenase determination in the evaluation of unexplained thrombocytosis.

Thrombocytosis may reflect a primary myeloproliferative disorder or be a secondary reaction to other pathologic processes. Patients with persistent unexplained thrombocytosis meeting criteria of primary thrombocythemia had elevated levels of serum lactic dehydrogenase, whereas comparable patients with secondary thrombocytosis did not. The findings of an elevated serum lactic dehydrogenase supports the diagnosis of a myeloproliferative syndrome in patients who have unexplained thrombocytosis, and should be useful in the differential diagnosis of this hematologic abnormality.

Induction therapy and intensive consolidation with daunorubicin, cytosine arabinoside, and 6-thioguanine in adult acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia.

Twenty-one patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia were treated with a regimen including daunorubicin, cytosine arabinoside, and 6-thioguanine and 15 patients (71%) achieved a complete remission. Thirteen of the 15 remissions occurred after a single course of therapy and two after two courses of treatment resulting in a rapid time to complete remission. The time from treatment initiation to complete remission was 21-82 days with a median of 29 days.

Human lymphocyte tubulin. Purification and characterization in normal and leukemic cells.

Tubulin has been purified from human blood and tonsil lymphocytes. Using gel filtration, the molecular weight of human lymphocyte tubulin was estimated to be 119000. The protein was shown to consist of two subunits, with molecular weights of 61000 and 58000 comparable to the alpha and beta polypeptides of human brain tubulin.

Children's health outcomes in six different ambulatory care delivery systems.

This study assesses health outcomes across six widely varying delivery settings within one population sample, describing differences between actual and expected illness prevalences among children using each type of setting as a regular source. Illness measures are from independent clinical examinations of the children for anemia, acute and chronic ear problems, hearing loss and vision disorders. Comparisons of actual with expected prevalences based on each setting's patient clientele reveal three systematic patterns: children using solo practitioners had generally higher-than-expected illness prevalences, while those using the prepaid group and hospital outpatient departments had uniformly lower-than-expected prevalences.

Protein kinases in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Phase II study of adriamycin and bleomycin in patients with multiple myeloma.

Twenty-seven patients with far-advanced multiple myeloma, resistant to standard agents, were treated with either adriamycin (eight patients) or bleomycin (19 patients). Adriamycin was given iv at a dose of 60 mg/m2 every 3 weeks and bleomycin was administered im at a dose of 15 mg/m2 weekly. Drug toxicity was modest.

Ulcers of the leg in thalassemia.

Four patients had thalassemia and leg ulcers. In three patients the hematologic diagnosis of thalassemia had not been previously made; the presenting symptom was the leg ulcer. The diagnosis of thalassemia should be considered in patients who have unexplained chronic leg ulcers; the incidence of this complication of thalassemia may be higher than previously reported.

Multiple myeloma with cutaneous involvement.

A 49-year-old man with multiple myeloma, IgA type, contracted cutaneous plasmocytomas. No deposits of immunoglobulin were found in the cutaneous tumor by direct immunofluorescence. The case is an unusual manifestation occurring in multiple myeloma.

Cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase activity in normal and chronic lymphocytic leukemia lymphocytes.

The specific activity of cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase was measured in lymphocytes isolated from the blood of normal subjects, from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and from tonsil tissue. The mean specific activity of cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase in the lymphocytes from patients with untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia was lower than that in lymphocytes from the blood of normal subjects or from tonsils. Cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase levels did not correlate with differences in B- and T-cell lymphocyte subpopulations or with peripheral blood lymphocyte counts.

Biomechanically induced tissue reactions after Al2O3-ceramic hip joint replacement. Experimental and early clinical results.

A biomechanical concept of interface maturation around cement-free implanted alumina-ceramic hip endoprostheses in sheep is explained. Provided there is rigid primary stability of the implant within the bone bed, hard tissue formation along the support areas of the implant is mainly dependent on implant shape and main local stress direction. Three subsequent phases of interface maturation can be distinguished, finally resulting in firm fixation of the implant by mechanical interlocking of supporting bone and ceramic.
