Ranpirnase Reduces HIV-1 Infection and Associated Inflammatory Changes in a Human Colorectal Explant Model.

Ranpirnase (RNP) is a low molecular weight type III endoribonuclease, which demonstrates broad antiviral and antitumor properties. We sought to characterize the antiviral activity of RNP against HIV-1 and to determine whether RNP modulates local inflammatory changes associated with HIV infection in the colorectal explant model. Colorectal explants were incubated for 2 h with HIV-1, in the presence of increasing concentrations of RNP (0-60 μg/mL).

When encountering an excess of information, people are able to selectively remember high-value information by strategically allocating attention during the encoding period, termed value-directed remembering. This has been demonstrated in both the episodic verbal and visuospatial memory domains. Importantly, the allocation of attention also plays a crucial role in the binding of identity and location information in visuospatial memory.

Time domain diffuse correlation spectroscopy: modeling the effects of laser coherence length and instrument response function.

Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is an optical technique that non-invasively quantifies an index of blood flow (BF) by measuring the temporal autocorrelation function of the intensity fluctuations of light diffusely remitted from the tissue. Traditional DCS measurements use continuous wave (CW) lasers with coherence lengths longer than the photon path lengths in the sample to ensure that the diffusely remitted light is coherent and generates a speckle pattern. Recently, we proposed time domain DCS (TD-DCS) to allow measurements of the speckle fluctuations for specific path lengths of light through the tissue, which has the distinct advantage of permitting an analysis of selected long path lengths of light to improve the depth sensitivity of the measurement.

The Effect of Electroencephalography Leads on Image Quality in Cerebral Perfusion SPECT and F-FDG PET/CT.

Cerebral perfusion SPECT and F-FDG PET/CT are commonly performed diagnostic procedures for patients with epilepsy. Individuals undergoing these tests are often inpatients with electroencephalography leads. We have routinely removed these leads because of concern that they would lead to imaging artifacts.

Background: Immune checkpoint blockade therapy has shown promising results in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab in this patient population.

Methods: KEYNOTE-224 is a non-randomised, multicentre, open-label, phase 2 trial that is set in 47 medical centres and hospitals across ten countries.

Genome-scale metabolic models have become the tool of choice for the global analysis of microorganism metabolism, and their reconstruction has attained high standards of quality and reliability. Improvements in this area have been accompanied by the development of some major platforms and databases, and an explosion of individual bioinformatics methods. Consequently, many recent models result from "à la carte" pipelines, combining the use of platforms, individual tools and biological expertise to enhance the quality of the reconstruction.

A Randomized Phase II Open-Label Multi-Institution Study of the Combination of Bevacizumab and Erlotinib Compared to Sorafenib in the First-Line Treatment of Patients with Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Objectives: To investigate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of the combination of bevacizumab (B) and erlotinib (E) compared to sorafenib (S) as first-line treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: A total of 90 patients with advanced HCC, Child-Pugh class A-B7 cirrhosis, and no prior systemic therapy were randomly assigned (1: 1) to receive either 10 mg/kg B intravenously every 14 days and 150 mg E orally daily (n = 47) (B+E) or 400 mg S orally twice daily (n = 43). The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS).

Background: Recent literature suggests that living in a rural setting may be associated with adverse cancer outcomes. This study examines the burden of travel from home to cancer center for clinical trial (CT) enrollees.

Materials And Methods: Patients from the University of California San Francisco Clinical Trial Management System database who enrolled in a cancer CT for a breast, genitourinary, or gastrointestinal malignancy between 1993 and 2014 were included.

Memory for important item-location associations in younger and older adults.

Older adults typically experience memory impairments for verbal and visuospatial episodic information, which are most pronounced for associative information. Although some age-related verbal memory deficits may be reduced by selectively focusing on high-value item information, the binding of items to locations in visuospatial memory involves different processes that are impaired in older adults. In the current study, we examined whether age-related impairment in visuospatial binding could be alleviated by strategic focus on important information and whether varying study time and presentation formats would affect such selectivity.

A Phase II Trial of Selinexor, an Oral Selective Inhibitor of Nuclear Export Compound, in Abiraterone- and/or Enzalutamide-Refractory Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

Lessons Learned: In abiraterone- and/or enzalutamide-refractory metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients, selinexor led to prostate-specific antigen and/or radiographic responses in a subset of patients, indicating clinical activity in this indication.Despite twice-a-week dosing and maximal symptomatic management, selinexor was associated with significant anorexia, nausea, and fatigue in mCRPC patients refractory to second-generation anti-androgen therapies, limiting further clinical development in this patient population.This study highlights the challenge of primary endpoint selection for phase II studies in the post-abiraterone and/or post-enzalutamide mCRPC space.

[Individual patient satisfaction in 'Gesundes Kinzigtal': Interim results of a trend study].

Introduction: The integrated health care pilot model "Gesundes Kinzigtal" (GK) is recognized as a reference model for integrated healthcare in Germany. The aim of GK is to improve the health of the insured persons and, at the same time, to decrease their healthcare costs compared to usual care. The evaluation of GK has so far shown that GK might reach this aim.

Detection of femoroplasty on pre- and post-arthroscopic comparison radiographs following treatment of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome: multi-reader accuracy and agreement study.

Objective: To assess diagnostic accuracy and agreement among radiologists in detecting femoroplasty on pre- and post-arthroscopic comparison frog lateral and anteroposterior (AP) pelvic radiographs after treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, 86 patients underwent hip arthroscopy (52 with and 34 without femoroplasty) for treatment of FAI syndrome. Three radiologists blinded to clinical data and chronological order of the pre- and post-arthroscopic comparison radiographs independently examined AP pelvis and frog lateral radiographs to detect femoroplasty changes.

The contribution of mastery to mental health and purpose in life among female veterans with disabilities in Israel.

Self-report questionnaires assessing mental health, purpose in life (PIL) and mastery were administered to 61 female veterans with disabilities (FVWD) and compared 72 demographically matched women in control group without disabilities to learn about use of personal resources in promoting well-being and resilience. Age range was 20-82, average age was 48.87.

Direct and Indirect Effects of Psychological Distress on Stress-Induced Smoking.

Objective: Numerous studies have modeled the effects of stress in the laboratory, demonstrating that smokers who are exposed to experimental stressors exhibit significant increases in acute psychological distress. Whether these stress reactions are predictive of stress-induced smoking during an actual quit attempt, however, has not been examined. Furthermore, the possibility that such effects are particularly strong among smokers with higher ambient levels of distress has not been addressed.
