Thermal neutrons generated in the body during proton beam therapy (PBT) can be used to cause boron neutron capture reactions and have recently been proposed as neutron capture enhanced PBT (NCEPBT). However, the cell killing effect of NCEPBT remains underexplored. Here, we show an increase in the cell killing effect of NCEPBT.

We have demonstrated localized surface plasmon (LSP)-enhanced cathodoluminescence (CL) from an atomic layer deposition (ALD)-grown Al2O3/ZnO/Al2O3 heterostructure to develop a bright nanometer-scale light source for an electron beam excitation-assisted (EXA) optical microscope. Three types of metals, Ag, Al, and Au, were compared, and an 181-fold enhancement of CL emission was achieved with Ag nanoparticles (NPs), with the plasmon resonance wavelength close to the emission wavelength energy of ZnO. The enhanced emission is plausibly attributed to LSP/exciton coupling.

Background: Urine albumin (UA) is an important biomarker of chronic kidney disease. Current in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVD-MDs) for measuring UA are not standardized, and median results among IVD-MDs differ by approximately 45%. Since fixed decision values are used to interpret UA, higher-order reference measurement procedures (RMPs) are needed for metrological traceability.

In this study, we present an innovative approach for creating hierarchical meso/nanoporous Pt films using dynamic soft templating. The fabrication process, called dynamic soft templating, involves Pt electrodeposition within a specialized bicontinuous microemulsion (BME) system characterized by a sophisticated three-dimensional network comprising water and oil phases, surfactants, and cosurfactants. Pt electrodeposition exclusively occurs in the water phase of the BME.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research shows a link between gut microbiota and sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC), but its relationship with hereditary Lynch Syndrome (LS) is not well understood.
  • A study examined the gut microbiota and metabolites in 71 Japanese LS patients compared to 437 non-LS controls, revealing that LS patients have lower microbial diversity and specific metabolite profiles.
  • The findings indicate that gut microbiota may be more actively involved in tumor formation in LS patients than in those with sporadic CRC.

Background: Proton beams deposit energy along their path, abruptly stopping and generating various radioactive particles, including positrons, along their trajectory. In comparison with traditional proton beam therapy, scanning proton beam therapy is effective in delivering proton beams to irregularly shaped tumors, reducing excessive radiation exposure to the alimentary tract during the treatment of liver cancer.

Methods: In this study, we utilized positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging to assess the total amount of radiation to the alimentary tract during liver cancer treatment with proton beam therapy, involving the administration of complex irradiation in 13 patients.

A novel NH gas sensor is introduced, employing polyaniline (PANI) with a unique structure called a graft film. The preparation method was simple: polydopamine (PD) was coated on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and PANI graft chains were grown on its surface. This distinctive three-layer sensor showed a response value of 12 for 50 ppm NH in a dry atmosphere at 50 °C.

Event cameras respond to scene dynamics and provide signals naturally suitable for motion estimation with advantages, such as high dynamic range. The emerging field of event-based vision motivates a revisit of fundamental computer vision tasks related to motion, such as optical flow and depth estimation. However, state-of-the-art event-based optical flow methods tend to originate in frame-based deep-learning methods, which require several adaptations (data conversion, loss function, etc.

Schlieren imaging is an optical technique to observe the flow of transparent media, such as air or water, without any particle seeding. However, conventional frame-based techniques require both high spatial and temporal resolution cameras, which impose bright illumination and expensive computation limitations. Event cameras offer potential advantages (high dynamic range, high temporal resolution, and data efficiency) to overcome such limitations due to their bio-inspired sensing principle.
