The need for models that recapitulate liver physiology is perceived for drug development, study of liver disease and bioartificial liver support. The bipotent cell line HepaRG constitutes an efficient surrogate of liver function, yet its differentiated status relies on high concentrations of DMSO, which may compromise the study of drug metabolism and limit the applicability of this hepatic model. Herein, we present a three-dimensional (3D) strategy for the differentiation of HepaRG based on alginate microencapsulation of cell spheroids and culture in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-free conditions.

Using a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, about 3800 Ξ(b)(0) → Ξ(c)(+)π(-), Ξ(c)(+)) → pK(-)π(+) signal decays are reconstructed. From this sample, the first measurement of the Ξ(b)(0) baryon lifetime is made, relative to that of the Λ(b)(0) baryon. The mass differences M(Ξ(b)(0))-M(Λ(b)(0)) and M(Ξ(c)(+))-M(Λ(c)(+)) are also measured with precision more than 4 times better than the current world averages.

We synthesized a series of hybrid nanomaterials combining organic dyes with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) based on three different azobenzenes: monoazobenzene (4-phenylazophenol), bis-azobenzene (Disperse Yellow 7 and Fast Garnet derivative), and push-pull azobenzene (Disperse Red 1) via hydrosilylation coupling. The azo-functionalized POSS compounds possess high thermal stability, and their branched architecture resulted in effective suppression of molecular aggregation and allowed for direct imaging of individual dye-POSS structures with expected molecular dimensions. Stable, uniform, smooth, and ultrathin nanocomposite films with mixed silica-organic composition and relatively low refractive indices can be fabricated from all azo-POSS branched conjugates.

Resonant structures in B^{0}→ψ^{'}π^{-}K^{+} decays are analyzed by performing a four-dimensional fit of the decay amplitude, using pp collision data corresponding to 3  fb^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. The data cannot be described with K^{+}π^{-} resonances alone, which is confirmed with a model-independent approach. A highly significant Z(4430)^{-}→ψ^{'}π^{-} component is required, thus confirming the existence of this state.

A search for heavy Majorana neutrinos produced in the B- → π+ μ- μ- decay mode is performed using 3  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC. Neutrinos with masses in the range 250 to 5000 MeV and lifetimes from zero to 1000 ps are probed. In the absence of a signal, upper limits are set on the branching fraction B(B- → π+ μ- μ-) as functions of neutrino mass and lifetime.

Decays of B(s)(0) and B(0) mesons into J/ψ π+π-π+π- final states, produced in pp collisions at the LHC, are investigated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb-1 collected with the LHCb detector. B(s)(0) → J/ψ f1(1285) decays are seen for the first time, and the branching fractions are measured. Using these rates, the f1(1285) mixing angle between strange and nonstrange components of its wave function in the qq structure model is determined to be ±(24.

Operative treatment of pancreatic pseudocysts coincides with the indices of the blood coagulation system change, which are characterized as a hypercoagulative. These disorders are noted in 12-24 h postoperatively, their rate is reducing substantially while application of pentoxyphylline. Most significant lowering of intraoperative hypercoagulation was noted while application of endoscopic drainage with the pseudocysts cavity stenting.

Measurements of charm mixing parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of D0 → K+ π- to D0 → K- π+ rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. The analysis uses data, corresponding to 3  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, from proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the limit of charge-parity (CP ) symmetry, the mixing parameters are determined to be x'2=(5.

Charged particle multiplicities are studied in proton-proton collisions in the forward region at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text]TeV with data collected by the LHCb detector. The forward spectrometer allows access to a kinematic range of [Formula: see text] in pseudorapidity, momenta greater than [Formula: see text] and transverse momenta greater than [Formula: see text]. The measurements are performed using events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic acceptance.

Blood plasma proteomes obtained from 77 lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients (Stages I-III) and 67 healthy controls (all males) were analyzed by using the label-free liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the search of potential cancer biomarkers. All plasma samples were depleted of 14 highly-abundant plasma proteins by immune-affinity column chromatography before LC-MS/MS. We identified and quantified 809 differential proteins with molecular weights from 6.

A broad peaking structure is observed in the dimuon spectrum of B+ → K+ μ+ μ- decays in the kinematic region where the kaon has a low recoil against the dimuon system. The structure is consistent with interference between the B+ → K+ μ+ μ- decay and a resonance and has a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations. The mean and width of the resonance are measured to be 4191(-8)(+9)  MeV/c2 and 65(-16)(+22)  MeV/c2, respectively, where the uncertainties include statistical and systematic contributions.

The results of a self-consistent kinetic model of heating the solar corona and accelerating the fast solar wind are presented for plasma flowing in a nonuniform magnetic field configuration of near-Sun conditions. The model is based on a scale separation between the large transit or inhomogeneity scales and the small dissipation scales. The macroscale instability of the marginally stable particle distribution function compliments the resonant frequency sweeping dissipation of transient Alfvén waves by their induced emission in inhomogeneous streaming plasma that provides enough energy for keeping the plasma temperature decaying not faster than r(-1) in close agreement with in situ heliospheric observations.

Currently, there are no reliable biomarkers of blood plasma for early detection of prostate cancer (PC), a one of the most common malignancies in men. This study developed, universalized and tested a new standardized methodology of detection of prostate cancer biomarkers--profiling of low-molecular weight proteome of blood plasma (1-17 kDa). This approach includes three main components: a preliminary sample preparation, time-of-flight mass spectrometry with an matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization ALDI-TOF-MS), and the processing of data using bioinformatics software package.
