The density matrix quantum Monte Carlo (DMQMC) set of methods stochastically samples the exact N-body density matrix for interacting electrons at finite temperature. We introduce a simple modification to the interaction picture DMQMC (IP-DMQMC) method that overcomes the limitation of only sampling one inverse temperature point at a time, instead allowing for the sampling of a temperature range within a single calculation, thereby reducing the computational cost. At the target inverse temperature, instead of ending the simulation, we incorporate a change of picture away from the interaction picture.

Cerium and its derivatives have been used as remedies for wounds since the early 20th century. Cerium nitrate has attracted most attention in the treatment of deep burns, followed later by reports of its antimicrobial properties. Its ability to mimic and replace calcium is presumed to be a major mechanism of its beneficial action.

Despite the promise of past research on anxiety sensitivity (AS) and posttraumatic stress, extant work is limited, given (1) most studies consist of non-Hispanic White and middle-aged samples, (2) few have demonstrated incremental validity to general emotional traits and social determinants of health, and (3) limited work has characterized how AS relates to specific Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters among those with (probable) PTSD. The current study evaluated the role of AS in relation to PTSD symptom clusters among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of young adults with probable PTSD. Participants included young adults who met the clinical cut-off for probable PTSD per the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale.

Background: Previous research has observed positive associations between perceived quality of social support and mental well-being. Having access to functional social support that provides sources of care, compassion and helpful information have shown to be beneficial for mental health. However, there is a need to identify the psychological processes through which functional social support can elicit therapeutic outcomes on mental well-being.

Objective: Three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems are increasingly being used in health care settings for quantifying body size and shape. The potential exists to provide similar phenotyping capabilities outside of professional settings using smartphone applications (apps). The current study aim was to compare waist, hip, upper arm, and midthigh circumference measurements acquired by a free downloadable app (MeThreeSixty; Size Stream, Cary, North Carolina) and a conventional 20-camera 3D system (SS20; Size Stream) with those measured with a flexible tape at the same anatomic sites.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (surgery to remove one ovary and fallopian tube) is a more cost-effective approach than monitoring for asymptomatic endometriomas in women, considering the different risks associated with each option.
  • Researchers created a cost-effectiveness model to evaluate long-term outcomes for premenopausal women with two ovaries who do not want to have children, comparing mortality rates from ovarian cancer and risks related to surgical menopause.
  • Results indicate that the surgical option could potentially offer better outcomes, but the study also emphasizes the importance of considering financial impacts and the patient's specific circumstances before deciding on the treatment approach.

Background: High phytoestrogen intake during adolescence is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Breast density (BD) is a strong predictor of breast cancer and can be considered an early marker. We aim to assess the association between the mean habitual intake of isoflavones, lignans, and total phytoestrogens intake during puberty until 2 years after menarche onset and absolute fibroglandular volume (AFGV) and percentage of fibroglandular volume (%FGV) in Hispanic girls at the end of puberty.

Background: The quality of radiotherapy delivery has been shown to significantly impact clinical outcomes including patient survival. To identify errors, institutions perform Patient Specific Quality Assurance (PSQA) assessing each individual radiotherapy plan prior to starting patient treatments. Externally administered Dosimetry Audits have found problems despite institutions passing their own PSQA.

Research suggests that assault-related injuries known by the police significantly differ from those known by healthcare providers, but the magnitude and nature of these differences are poorly understood. To address this gap, our study examined the empirical differences between assault-related injuries reported to police and treated by healthcare providers. In June of 2021, we analyzed the National Crime Victimization Survey (1993-2019) to estimate the prevalence of police reporting and healthcare use among 5093 nonfatal victimizations that caused injury and were either reported to the police or treated by healthcare in the United States.

Introduction: Prior evidence indicates that predictors of older adult falls vary by indoor-outdoor location of the falls. While a subset of United States' studies reports this finding using primary data from a single geographic area, other secondary analyses of falls across the country do not distinguish between the two fall locations. Consequently, evidence at the national level on risk factors specific to indoor vs outdoor falls is lacking.

Salinization of soils and freshwater resources by natural processes and/or human activities has become an increasing issue that affects environmental services and socioeconomic relations. In addition, salinization jeopardizes agroecosystems, inducing salt stress in most cultivated plants (nutrient deficiency, pH and oxidative stress, biomass reduction), and directly affects the quality and quantity of food production. Depending on the type of salt/stress (alkaline or pH-neutral), specific approaches and solutions should be applied to ameliorate the situation on-site.

Lithium salts are used in the treatment of mood disorders, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. It has been shown to prolong life span in several phyla; however, not yet in budding yeast. In our study, we investigate the influence of lithium on yeast cells' viability by characterizing protein aggregate formation, cell volume, and molecular crowding in the context of stress adaptation.

Since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019, there have been global public health initiatives that have advocated for the community use of face masks to reduce spread of the virus. Although the community use of facial coverings has been deemed essential for public health, there have been calls for enquiries to ascertain how face masks may impact non-verbal methods of communication. This study aimed to ascertain how the brief observations of faces in opaque facial coverings could impact facial emotion recognition.

Deep-brain microscopy is strongly limited by the size of the imaging probe, both in terms of achievable resolution and potential trauma due to surgery. Here, we show that a segment of an ultra-thin multi-mode fiber (cannula) can replace the bulky microscope objective inside the brain. By creating a self-consistent deep neural network that is trained to reconstruct anthropocentric images from the raw signal transported by the cannula, we demonstrate a single-cell resolution (< 10μm), depth sectioning resolution of 40 μm, and field of view of 200 μm, all with green-fluorescent-protein labelled neurons imaged at depths as large as 1.

Combining classifier systems potentially improves predictive accuracy, but outcomes have proven impossible to predict. Classification most commonly improves when the classifiers are "sufficiently good" (generalized as " ") and "sufficiently different" (generalized as " "), but the individual and joint quantitative influence of these factors on the final outcome remains unknown. We resolve these issues.

Objectives: The experiences of women like me, diagnosed with HIV before the development of effective antiretrovirals, tend to be neglected and overlooked. Research, policy and services can better serve us if our lived experiences are known and understood within a contextual framework. This small study revisited published personal experience stories by women diagnosed with HIV before 1992 in order to examine what the women said and why.
