Article Synopsis
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are complex organic molecules with multiple interconnected aromatic rings, commonly found in space.
  • Researchers discovered 1-cyanopyrene, a specific type of PAH derived from pyrene, in the dense cloud TMC-1 using the Green Bank Telescope.
  • The findings imply that PAHs, particularly pyrene, play a significant role in contributing carbon to young planetary systems, suggesting they originate from cold molecular clouds.

Copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) chemistry is reported for the construction of previously unknown 5-(1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)-4,5'-bithiazoles from 2-bromo-1-(thiazol-5-yl)ethanones. These novel triazolobithiazoles are shown to have cystic fibrosis (CF) corrector activity and, compared to the benchmark bithiazole CF corrector corr-4a, improved logP values (4.5 vs 5.

Study Objective: To determine whether shoulder and head elevation, such that the patient's ear lies at or higher than the sternum ("ramp"), improves laryngoscopic grade in adult patients of various body mass index (BMI) values.

Design: Prospective, unblinded study, with patients and laryngoscopists acting as their own controls.

Setting: Operating room of a university-affiliated hospital.

Dynamic isoelectric/anisotropy binding ligand assay (DIABLA) is a new method to identify proteins in a complex sample that bind to a molecule of interest. This is accomplished by first using capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) to separate the proteins in a capillary based on their isoelectric point. This separation is performed while the compound being tested is present in the separation buffer.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder with a spectrum of manifestations including neurological symptoms, premature arteriosclerosis, and venous and arterial thrombosis. Most patients are heterozygous for multiple MTHFR substitutions; small minorities are homozygous for mutations at this locus. Among these mutations, the C677T polymorphism is the most deleterious.

A large splenic cyst is revealed in the patient during a general work-up for possible cholecytitis and cholelithiases. The size of the splenic cyst measured by ultrasonogram is 84 x 76 x 77 mm. The patient has no symptoms from her splenic cyst, and has had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy for diseased gall bladder.
