The muscle synergy concept suggests that the human motor system is organized into functional modules composed of muscles "" toward common task goals. This study offers a nuanced computational perspective to muscle synergies, where muscles interacting across multiple scales have functionally similar, complementary, and independent roles. Making this viewpoint implicit to a methodological approach applying Partial Information Decomposition to large-scale muscle activations, we unveiled nested networks of functionally diverse inter- and intramuscular interactions with distinct functional consequences on task performance.

Previously, we demonstrated a 2-3 fold increase in activity for one Rh-LmrR construct by introducing positive charge in the secondary coordination sphere. In this study, a series of variants was made through site-directed mutagenesis where the negative charge is located in the secondary sphere or outer coordination sphere, with additional variants made with increasingly negative charge in the outer coordination sphere while keeping a positive charge in the secondary sphere.

The discovery of a novel sphingolipid subclass, the (1-deoxy)sphingolipids, which lack the 1-hydroxy group, attracted considerable attention in the last decade, mainly due to their involvement in disease. They differed in their physico-chemical properties from the canonical (or 1-hydroxy) sphingolipids and they were more toxic when accumulated in cells, inducing neurodegeneration and other dysfunctions. (1-Deoxy)ceramides, (1-deoxy)dihydroceramides, and (1- deoxymethyl)dihydroceramides, the latter two containing a saturated sphingoid chain, have been studied in this work using differential scanning calorimetry, confocal fluorescence and atomic force microscopy, to evaluate their behavior in bilayers composed of mixtures of three or four lipids.

Epidemiological studies have found 2 significant factors associated with the increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD): the increased use of acetaminophen in the 1970s when this drug largely replaced the use of aspirin for many patients because of a fear of Reye syndrome, and the agricultural use in the 1990s of the herbicide glyphosate on crops that were genetically modified (GM) to tolerate glyphosate. The incidence of autism in the United States, where acetaminophen is widely available, is more than 1000 times greater than in Cuba, where acetaminophen is available only by prescription. Metabolites of both glyphosate and acetaminophen likely alter the function of the developmental protein sonic hedgehog (SHH).

Here we propose a methodology for the characterization of these motor patterns across individuals of different age groups. Specifically, we employ a bimanual grasp-lift-replace protocol with younger and older adults and combine measurements of muscle activity with grip and load forces to provide a window into the motor strategies supporting effective object lifts. We introduce a tensor decomposition to identify patterns of muscle activity and grip-load force ratios while also characterizing their temporal profiles and relative activation across object weights and participants of different age groups.

Methods: We randomly assigned infants with nonsyndromic isolated cleft palate, in a 1:1 ratio, to undergo standardized primary surgery at 6 months of age (6-month group) or at 12 months of age (12-month group) for closure of the cleft. Standardized assessments of quality-checked video and audio recordings at 1, 3, and 5 years of age were performed independently by speech and language therapists who were unaware of the trial-group assignments.
Objective: A more detailed understanding of unmet organizational support needs and workplace-based best practices for supporting cancer survivors is needed.
Methods: Ninety-four working breast cancer survivors responded to an open-ended survey question regarding the desired types of organizational support that were and were not received during early survivorship. We performed content-analysis of qualitative data.
