The UV radiation from these cabinets is reflected on the white ceiling tiles of the clinic and is then redirected toward both staff and patients in the area. This is particularly problematic for clinical technologists who must undertake dosimetry in these areas and have a specific time (often as low as 30 min) before they reach their maximum exposure limit.

We report an efficient route for the synthesis of highly substituted 1-aminonaphthalenes from benzaldehydes. The method employs a stereoselective Still-Gennari modification of the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination to afford ()-benzylidenesuccinonitrile precursors, which undergo Bronsted acid mediated benzannulation to afford 1-aminonaphthalene derivatives in 35-95% yield. The abundance of commercially available benzaldehydes, coupled with the simplicity of our method, enables many previously unexplored naphthalene substitution patterns to become readily accessible.

Relationships of beta-casein genetics with production, fertility, and survival of purebred organic Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to compare β-casein genotype of purebred certified-organic Holstein cows, and their effect on production, fertility, and survival. Holstein cows (n = 1,982) from 13 certified-organic dairy herds from the western, midwestern, and northeastern United States were genomically tested with CLARIFIDE Plus (Zoetis) for β-casein genotype. Two hundred fourteen cows were A1A1 (11%), 848 cows were A1A2 (43%), and 920 cows were A2A2 (46%).

Previous studies have shown that organically raised dairy cows have an increased prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus compared with conventionally raised dairy cows. However, little information exists about the dynamics of intramammary infection (IMI) in primiparous cows during early lactation on organic dairy farms. The objective of this study was to describe the IMI dynamics of primiparous cows on certified organic farms during early lactation.

Precision technologies to improve dairy grazing systems.

Pasture-based dairy herds continue to grow around the world as demand increases for sustainable farming practices. Grazing dairy farmers may benefit from the utilization of precision dairy technologies because these technologies have the potential to improve animal welfare, increase farm efficiency, and reduce costs. Precision dairy technologies have provided novel information about activity, rumination, and grazing behavior of various breeds in pasture-based systems.

Response to ad libitum milk allowance by crossbred dairy and dairy-beef calves in an automated feeding system.

The objective of this study was to compare three-breed rotational crossbred calves sired by Holstein, Jersey, Montbéliarde, Normande, Viking Red, and Limousin bulls with Holstein's calves fed a high milk allowance for growth, milk consumption, health scores, and profitability in an automated group feeding system. Breed groups were Holstein ( = 16), crossbreds of Montbéliarde, Viking Red, and Holstein ( = 24), crossbreds of Jersey, Normande, and Viking Red ( = 6), and Limousin crossbred beef × dairy ( = 45) calves. Calves were randomly assigned within the breed to one of two treatments from September 2019 to June 2020 at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, MN.

Effects of oral white willow bark () and intravenous flunixin meglumine on prostaglandin E in healthy dairy calves.

White willow bark (WWB) is commonly used in combination with other medicinal herbs and analgesics to alleviate inflammatory pain in disbudded calves under organic management, but there is no evidence to confirm an effect of WWB on inflammatory biomarkers in calves. The objective of this study was to determine whether WWB affects the inflammatory biomarker prostaglandin E (PGE) in healthy dairy calves. A randomized crossover trial with 2 periods and 5 treatments was used for this experiment.

Delayed Onset of Peroneal Nerve Palsy After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Peroneal nerve palsy (PNP) and peroneal nerve dysfunction (PND) are rare complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although PND tends to manifest as transient lateral leg paresthesias that are associated with knee motion, PNP has characteristic motor deficits, including loss of ankle dorsiflexion and eversion strength. Although PND can manifest days, weeks, or months after surgery, delayed cases of PNP have not been well documented.

Over the past 30 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has played a key role in shaping the field of patient navigation as a means to address cancer disparities. Through collaborations with organizations like the National Navigation Roundtable and the ACS Cancer Action Network, the ACS is uniquely positioned to help develop sustainable navigation models that directly address disparities in access to quality cancer care. As health systems continue to adapt and change in response to various factors, including an aging population and rapid advances in screening and treatment, it is important to evaluate existing navigation-delivery models and promote those that are sustainable while maximizing reach and impact and providing the greatest return on investment (ROI).

Load Sharing in the Femur Using Strut Allografts: A Biomechanical Study.

Background: Femoral strut allografts are used in revision hip arthroplasty for management of bone loss associated with implant failure or periprosthetic fractures. They have also been used to treat unremitting thigh pain in well-fixed cementless femoral stems, to address the differential in structural stiffness between the stem and femoral shaft. Our study used an in vitro biomechanical model to measure the effect of placement of allografts on femoral strains, to determine their load-sharing capacity.

Objectives: The use of routine remote follow-up of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing exponentially. It has been suggested that online electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) could be used in parallel, to facilitate real-time symptom monitoring aimed at improving outcomes. We tested the feasibility of this approach in a pilot trial of ePROM symptom monitoring versus usual care in patients with advanced CKD not on dialysis.
