Background: Available data suggest that physicians are accurate in approximately 55% of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) evaluation and management (E/M) coding for their services. This accuracy is relative to observers' or auditors' assigned codes for these services, a group that has not been studied for their consistency in application of the CPT E/M coding guidelines. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of agreement of certified coding specialists in their application of CPT E/M coding guidelines.

Oesophageal cancer rates in women in the UK are more than 3 times higher than in most other European populations. A population-based matched case-control study of histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus in women was carried out in 4 regions in England and Scotland. Interviews were carried out in hospital or at home and topics included: smoking; alcohol; tea and coffee consumption; medical and obstetric history; and diet.

Aggregates of 6-8 cells are first seen at approximately E12.5-12.

Methods: We describe the drug development process based on a review of the literature and Web sites addressing FDA processes and policies.

Background: Limited data are available on physicians' accuracy in coding for their services. The purpose of this study was to determine the current procedural terminology (CPT) evaluation and management coding accuracy of family physicians and define demographic variables associated with coding accuracy.
Methods: Six hundred randomly selected active members of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians were sent six hypothetical progress notes of office visits along with a demographic survey.
There is evidence that patients living in outlying areas have poorer survival from cancer. This study set out to investigate whether they have more advanced disease at diagnosis. Case notes of 1323 patients in north and northeast Scotland who were diagnosed with lung or colorectal cancer in 1995 or 1996 were reviewed.

We have isolated the full-length cDNA of the H-protein gene from the rabbit (Oryctolagus caniculus) by reverse transcription of liver poly-A mRNA and determined its nucleotide sequence (GenBank Acc. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional nine-item questionnaire.
Objectives: To examine the reliability and validity of spousal assessments by evaluating the collateral quality-of-life (QOL) ratings of patients of lower socioeconomic status with metastatic prostate cancer because collateral ratings provide supplemental information when advanced cancer limits patient self-report.
Methods: Patients with Stage D2 prostate cancer (n = 36) of lower socioeconomic status completed validated QOL instruments (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General [FACT-G], European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Quality of Life-30, and Quality of Life Index). Spouses completed a modified FACT-G, and physicians rated performance status using Karnofsky's scale.

The ability of sera to recognise secreted macromolecules of Staphylococcus aureus was examined by ELISA and Western immunoblotting. Individual secreted proteins were also studied using both human sera and sera from rabbits immunised with secreted macromolecules. Patients sera showed a wide range of IgG antibody titres to secreted macromolecules and whole bacteria.

We measured genome-wide changes in transcript levels as a function of age in Drosophila melanogaster and compared these changes with those caused by paraquat, a free-radical generator.

GFP requires no substrate and can be detected in fixed or living cells so is an attractive genetic marker. Tau-tagged GFP labels subcellular structures, including axons and the mitotic machinery, by binding the GFP to microtubules.

To investigate its aetiology, we conducted a multi-centre, population based case-control study in four regions in England and Scotland. We included 74 incident cases in women with histologically confirmed diagnoses of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus, and 74 female controls matched by age and general practice.

Increasing distance from a cancer centre was associated with less chance of diagnosis before death for stomach, breast and colorectal cancers and poorer survival after diagnosis for prostate and lung cancers.

To identify molecules involved in sensory organ development, we conducted a tissue-specific gain-of-function screen. We screened 2293 independent P-element lines established by P.

In 1990, clotrimazole became the first available OTC drug to treat candidal vaginitis. Subsequently several other prescription antifungal medications have also been available in OTC products.

The genes glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) (chromosome 1p13.3) and glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) (22q11.2) code for cytosolic enzymes glutathione S-transferase (GST)-mu and GST-theta, respectively, which are involved in phase 2 metabolism.

Outcomes included a measure of health care providers' diabetes knowledge and the Diabetes Attitude Scale (DAS), a validated measure of attitudes toward diabetes.
Research Design And Methods: A CME program on type 2 diabetes was presented by an expert panel in Chicago during November 1998.
The development of T cells results in a concordance between the specificity of the TCR for MHC class I and class II molecules and the expression of CD8 and CD4 coreceptors. Based on analogy to simple metazoan models of organ development and lineage commitment, we sought to determine whether extracellular signal-related kinase (Erk) mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway signaling acts as an inductive signal for the CD4 lineage. Here, we show that, by altering the intracellular signaling involving the Erk/MAP kinase pathway, T cells with specificity for MHC class I can be diverted to express CD4, and, conversely, T cells with specificity for MHC class II can be diverted to express CD8.
