Purpose: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) are two important hypoxic markers associated with the radioresistance of cancers including laryngeal carcinoma. We evaluated whether the simultaneous inhibition of GLUT-1 and HIF-1α expression improved the radiosensitivity of laryngeal carcinoma. We explored whether the expression of HIF-1α and GLUT-1 was correlated with 2'-deoxy-2'-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG) uptake and whether 18F-FDG positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) was appropriate for early evaluation of the response of laryngeal carcinoma to targeted treatment in vivo.

However, studies integrating the expression of mRNAs and lncRNAs to predict the survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) are still limited, hitherto. In current work, we identified survival related mRNAs and lncRNAs in three datasets (TCGA dataset, E-TABM-302, GSE41613).

Materials And Methods: In this study, we analyzed the high-resolution allele and haplotype frequencies at the HLA-A, -B and -DRB1 loci in the Liaoning Han population and analyzed its relationships with other populations.

Protective effects of hydrogen sulfide against angiotensin II-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress in HUVECs.

The inhibitory effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on angiotensin II (AngII)-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) dysfunction remain to be elucidated. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been detected in endothelial dysfunction (ED). The present study aimed to determine whether H2S may exert an inhibitory effect on AngII‑induced ER stress.

Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Bathing with Chinese Medicine Taohong Siwu Decoction () for Treatment of Diffuse Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Objective: To examine the efficacy and safety of bathing therapy with Taohong Siwu Decoction (, TSD) in the treatment of early-stage, mild-moderate diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc).

Methods: This randomized, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 148 men and women (18-60 years) with dcSSc (disease duration 12 months) and baseline modified Rodnan skin score (MRSS) 10. Patients were randomized into a TSD group (71 cases bathing with TSD plus oral prednisone) or control group (71 cases bathing with placebo plus oral prednisone).

Generation of double-scale pulses in a LD-pumped Yb:phosphate solid-state laser.

We have demonstrated a generation of double-scale in a laser diode (LD)-pumped Yb:phosphate solid-state laser. The double-scale pulse with a spectrum bandwidth of 4.6 nm is obtained at a central wavelength of 1030 nm with maximum output power of 377 mW and 80 MHz repetition rate.

The role of hypoxia inducible factor in nasal inflammations.

Objective: Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is considered an important transcription factor due to its roles in glycolysis, angiogenesis, cell differentiation, apoptosis, and other cellular pathways. It takes the role in various physiological and pathological states, such as solid tumors, vascular injury, and atherosclerotic lesion progression. In recent studies, HIF is found as a master regulator of body inflammation and immunity, not only in hypoxia but also in normoxia.

Warburg effect, hexokinase-II, and radioresistance of laryngeal carcinoma.

Radiotherapy is now widely used as a part of multidisciplinary treatment approaches for advanced laryngeal carcinoma and preservation of laryngeal function. However, the mechanism of the radioresistance is still unclear. Some studies have revealed that the Warburg effect promotes the radioresistance of various malignant tumors, including laryngeal carcinoma.

Hydrogen sulfide suppresses angiotensin II-stimulated endothelin-1 generation and subsequent cytotoxicity-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress in endothelial cells via NF-κB.

The effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway in angiotensin II (AngII)-induced endothelin-1 (ET-1) expression and subsequent cytotoxicity remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that H2S protects human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) against AngII‑stimulated ET‑1 generation and subsequent cytotoxicity‑induced endoplasmic reticulum stress via the NF‑κB signaling pathway. The results of the present study demonstrated that AngII significantly upregulated the expression levels of ET‑1, glucose‑regulated protein 78, CCAAT‑enhancer‑binding protein homologous protein, phosphorylated (p)‑p65 and inducible nitric oxide synthase; stimulated nitric oxide production; suppressed the expression and activity of cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE), a H2S synthetase; and decreased cell viability.

[Efficacy Observation of Chinese Herbal Fumigation Combined Western Drugs for Treating Sys- temic Sclerosis Complicated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension].

Objective To observe the therapeutic efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal fumigation combined with leflunomide (LEF) and prednisone (Pred) in treatment of systemic sclerosis (SSc) complicated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Methods Totally 99 SSc patients complicated early PAH were randomly assigned to the Western drugs group (WD, 49 cases) and the integrative medicine group (IM, 50 cases). Patients in the WD group took LEF (20 mg) and Pred (15 mg) , once per day.

Severe Mechanical Hemolysis After Transcatheter Closure of a Traumatic Ventricular Septal Defect Using the Amplatzer Atrial Septal Occluder.

Traumatic ventricular septal defect (VSD) resulting from chest trauma, either penetrating or blunt, is a relatively rare occurrence. Herein, we describe the case of a previously healthy 26-year-old man who presented with congestive heart failure, which was secondary to a large traumatic VSD following violent blunt chest trauma. The traumatic VSD was initially closed percutaneously using an Amplatzer atrial septal defect occluder.

Role of atopy in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: does an atopic condition affect the severity and recurrence of disease?

Background: The role of atopy in chronic rhinosinusitis is unclear: it is particularly controversial in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Methods: A prospective study of 210 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps was performed. Patient demographics, visual analogue scale scores, Lund-Kennedy endoscopy scores, Lund-Mackay computed tomography scores, serum total immunoglobulin E levels, serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels and Phadiatop test findings were analysed.

Enhanced exo-inulinase activity and stability by fusion of an inulin-binding module.

In this study, an inulin-binding module from Bacillus macerans was successfully fused to an exo-inulinase from Kluyveromyces marxianus, creating a hybrid functional enzyme. The recombinant exo-inulinase (rINU), the hybrid enzyme (rINUIBM), and the recombinant inulin-binding module (rIBM) were, respectively, heterologously expressed and biochemically characterized. It was found that both the inulinase activity and the catalytic efficiency (k cat/K m(app)) of the rINUIBM were considerably higher than those of rINU.

Transnasal endoscopic resection of vascular leiomyomas of the nasal septum.

Objective: Our experience with endoscopic surgery for vascular leiomyomas of the nasal septum was reviewed.

Patients And Methods: All patients with vascular leiomyomas of the nasal septum who were treated with endoscopic surgery from May 1995 to June 2007 were reviewed retrospectively.

Results: Twelve patients had vascular leiomyomas of the nasal septum removed successfully; there were no recurrences or endocrine complications during the 15-62-month follow-up postoperatively.

Optimized total thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.

Background: Total thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy (TLE) has attracted attention with the advantage of better operative field and minimal wound for the esophageal cancer. However, various severe complications are also reported during the TLE such as cervical anastomotic leakage, chylothorax, and tracheal injury. The aim of this study was to introduce a new optimized TLE procedure for the esophageal cancer and assess its safety and clinical effects.

The roles of autophagy in vascular smooth muscle cells.

Autophagy, which is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism and links to several cellular pathways, impacts vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) survival and function. Activation of autophagy by intercellular and/or extracellular stimuli has protective effects on VSMCs against cell death, while on the contrary, overloading autophagy has been recognized as a deleterious process by excessive self-digestion. Alterations in autophagy has been documented in VSMC in response to various stimuli, resulting in modulation of VSMC functions, including proliferation, migration, matrix secretion, contraction/relaxation, and differentiation.

Cutaneous and Subcutaneous Metastases From Atypical Laryngeal Carcinoids: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

The incidence of cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases from atypical laryngeal carcinoids is approximately 20%. However, the pathogenesis and natural history of, and prognostic factors for, the condition remain poorly understood. We reported a 54-year-old female presented with cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases from atypical laryngeal carcinoid.

HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-DRB1 allele and haplotype frequencies of 14,529 Chinese Han bone marrow donors living in Dalian, China.

We investigated the allele and haplotype frequencies of HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-DRB1 loci in Dalian Chinese Han population using blood samples of unrelated marrow donors who live in Dalian. The genetic relationship between Dalian and different regions worldwide was further explored based on HLA status of different populations. A total of 14,529 samples were genotyped at 2-digit level only by sequence-specific oligonucleotide and sequence-based typing methods.
