Dietary calcium attenuation of body fat gain during high-fat feeding in mice.

Human epidemiological studies have supported the hypothesis that a dairy food-rich diet is associated with lower fat accumulation, although prospective studies and intervention trials are not so conclusive and contradictory data exist in animal models. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects on body weight and fat depots of dairy calcium (12 g/kg diet) in wild-type mice under ad libitum high-fat (43%) and normal-fat (12%) diets and to gain comprehension on the underlying mechanism of dairy calcium effects. Our results show that calcium intake decreases body weight and body fat depot gain under high-fat diet and accelerates weight loss under normal-fat diet, without differences in food intake.

Inter-laboratory comparison of elemental analysis and gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). Part I: delta13C measurements of selected compounds for the development of an isotopic Grob-test.

This study was directed towards investigating suitable compounds to be used as stable isotope reference materials for gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) calibration. Several compounds were selected from those used in the 'Grob-test' mixture. Oxygen- and nitrogen-containing substances were added to these compounds to allow the mixture to be used as a possible multi-isotopic calibration tool for 2H/1H, 13C/12C, 15N/14N and 18O/16O ratio determinations.

Determination of the geographical origin of green coffee by principal component analysis of carbon, nitrogen and boron stable isotope ratios.

In this study we show that the continental origin of coffee can be inferred on the basis of coupling the isotope ratios of several elements determined in green beans. The combination of the isotopic fingerprints of carbon, nitrogen and boron, used as integrated proxies for environmental conditions and agricultural practices, allows discrimination among the three continental areas producing coffee (Africa, Asia and America). In these continents there are countries producing 'specialty coffees', highly rated on the market that are sometimes mislabeled further on along the export-sale chain or mixed with cheaper coffees produced in other regions.

[Microsurgery of canalicular stenosis].

Retinoic acid modulates the retinoblastoma protein during adipocyte terminal differentiation.

Terminal differentiation is characterized by a permanent withdrawal of cells from the cell cycle. Retinoblastoma protein (RB) has been involved in cell cycle progression. Accumulating evidence also implicates RB in the promotion of differentiation of many cell types.

Microstructural analysis of the effects of incorporation of myelin basic protein in phospholipid layers.

We report an X-ray reflectivity study on the effects of adsorption of myelin basic protein (MBP) on Langmuir monolayers and on deposited Langmuir-Schaefer multilayers of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG). We provide for the first time, direct microscopic evidence on the destructuring effects of MBP leading to plasticity of the DPPG layers supporting commonly accepted models of the stabilizing role of MBP in the myelin membrane. We also show how protein adsorption onto the layer is determined both by electrostatic and nonspecific hydrophobic interactions.

13C and 18O isotopic analysis to determine the origin of L-tartaric acid.

Due to the ever-increasing amount of attention paid to the 'naturalness' of ingredients in food and beverages by both consumers and controlling authorities, the search for suitable methods for the characterisation of origin is of primary importance. Within the European Community the wine production industry is often faced with the problem of origin control of tartaric acid. This has led to the decision that only L-tartaric acid extracted from grapes (therefore natural) should be used.

[Upper cosmetic blepharoplasty and the eye brow].

Upper cosmetic blepharoplasty allows to treat cutaneo-orbicularis excess of the upper eyelid, which is often associated with fat prolapse. Using the same surgical way, it is also possible to treat external heaviness of the brow, mild brow ptosis and glabellar wrinkles. We will describe the most important stages of these different surgical techniques.

Long-term effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with refractory heart failure and "narrow" QRS.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with refractory heart failure (HF) and incomplete left bundle branch block ("narrow" QRS), together with echocardiographic evidence of interventricular and intraventricular asynchrony.

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy has been proven effective in patients with HF and wide QRS by ameliorating contraction asynchrony.

Methods: Fifty-two patients with severe HF received biventricular pacing.

Resistin expression in different adipose tissue depots during rat development.

Resistin is a hormonal factor synthesised by adipocytes that was first thought to be related with the resistance to insulin in obesity, but whose function is not yet completely established. Here we have studied the ontogenic pattern of resistin mRNA expression in different white adipose tissue depots (WAT)--epididymal, inguinal, mesenteric and retroperitoneal--and in brown adipose tissue (BAT), as well as the circulating resistin levels, in rats of different ages (from the suckling period to one year of age). Resistin mRNA was determined by Northern blotting, and serum levels by enzyme immunoassay.

General aspects on the assessment of functional foods in the European Union.

During the last 6 y, the European Union has undergone a profound qualitative change in the focus on food safety problems. In 1997, nine new scientific committees were created, including the Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) and the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), and were put under the auspices of the Directorate General in charge of defending consumer interests and health. The process is foreseen to be completed by the incorporation in 2003 of all food safety activities of these committees into the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Atomic force microscope characterization of a resonating nanocantilever.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) is used as a nanometer-scale resolution tool for the characterization of the electromechanical behaviour of a resonant cantilever-based mass sensor. The cantilever is actuated electrostatically by applying DC and AC voltages from a driver electrode placed closely parallel to the cantilever. In order to minimize the interaction between AFM probe and the resonating transducer cantilever, the AFM is operated in a dynamic non-contact mode, using oscillation amplitudes corresponding to a low force regime.

Differentiation of the geographical origin of durum wheat semolina samples on the basis of isotopic composition.

The identification of the geographical origin of foods is attracting great interest from consumers and producers since it may be used as a criterion for guaranteeing quality and authenticity. Stable isotope techniques can provide useful information on the origin of food products. The natural abundance isotopic ratios of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen were determined and a comparison made between the isotopic content of samples originating from Italy and those of samples originating from other countries (Canada, Turkey, Australia).

Comparison of two different methods for the evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with coronary artery disease.

The evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) may be troublesome in difficult clinical settings in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to compare 2 simple geometrical and nongeometrical methods of LVEF evaluation that could overcome the typical technical limitations of ultrasound examination. The authors studied 26 patients with proven CAD (63+/-10 years) who underwent left ventricular (LV) catheterization and coronary angiography during the hospital stay.

Aneurysmal bone cysts: treatment with direct percutaneous Ethibloc injection: long-term results.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and long-term results of Ethibloc treatment in aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC).

Methods: Thirteen patients with ABC were treated with direct percutaneous Ethibloc injection. Four patients had only one injection and the other nine patients from two to four injections.

Synthesis and inotropic activity of 1-(O-aminoalkyloximes) of perhydroindene derivatives as simplified digitalis-like compounds acting on the Na(+),K(+)-ATPase.

A series of 5-substituted (3aS,7aR)-7a-methylperhydroinden-3a-ol derivatives bearing a 1(S)-(omega-aminoalkoxy)iminoalkyl or -alkenyl substituent was synthesized, starting from the Hajos-Parrish ketol 47, as simplified analogues of very potent 17beta-aminoalkyloximes with digitalis skeleton, previously reported. The target compounds were evaluated in vitro for displacement of the specific [3H]ouabain binding from the dog kidney Na(+),K(+)-ATPase receptor. Some of them revealed IC(50) values in the micromolar range.

Obesity: molecular bases of a multifactorial problem.

Obesity could well become the most common health problem of the 21st century. There are more opportunities to consume large quantities of food: big portions of tasty, varied food, at reasonable prices, are available everywhere. Moreover, our bodies are better adapted to combat weight loss than to combat weight gain, since for thousands of years our species evolved in circumstances where nutrients were in short supply.

Autologous graft-versus-host disease after CD34+-purified autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation.

17beta-O-Aminoalkyloximes of 5beta-androstane-3beta,14beta-diol with digitalis-like activity: synthesis, cardiotonic activity, structure-activity relationships, and molecular modeling of the Na(+),K(+)-ATPase receptor.

A series of digitalis-like compounds with a 17-aminoalkoxyiminoalkyl or -alkenyl substituent was synthesized and evaluated for inhibition of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase and for inotropic activity. The highest inhibition was found with compounds having the substituent in configuration 17beta and the amino group at a distance of 6 or 7 bonds from C(17) of the digitoxigenin skeleton. The presence of the oxime function strengthens the interaction with the receptor, more if alpha,beta-unsaturated, thus mimicking the electronic situation of the unsaturated lactone in natural digitalis compounds.

Turbidite Megabeds in an Oceanic Rift Valley Recording Jökulhlaups of Late Pleistocene Glacial Lakes of the Western United States.

Escanaba Trough is the southernmost segment of the Gorda Ridge and is filled by sandy turbidites locally exceeding 500 m in thickness. New results from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 1037 and 1038 that include accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dates and revised petrographic evaluation of the sediment provenance, combined with high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles, provide a lithostratigraphic framework for the turbidite deposits. Three fining-upward units of sandy turbidites from the upper 365 m at ODP Site 1037 can be correlated with sediment recovered at ODP Site 1038 and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) Site 35.

Quercetin inhibits p21-RAS expression in human colon cancer cell lines and in primary colorectal tumors.

Immunocytochemical studies have revealed that 10 microM quercetin reduced the steady state levels of p21-ras proteins in both colon cancer cell lines and primary colorectal tumors. These findings were confirmed by Western blot and flow cytometric analysis showing that the inhibition of p21-ras expression by quercetin was time- and concentration-dependent. Twenty-four-hour treatment with 10 microM quercetin reduced p21-ras levels to about 50% of control values.
