2,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3[2H]-furanone 6'-O-malonyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside was isolated from a glycosidic extract of strawberry fruit (Fragaria x ananassa, cv. Senga Sengana) by means of countercurrent chromatography and reverse-phase HPLC. Identification was achieved by comparison of chromatographic and 1H, 13C and 2D-NMR, as well as mass spectral data with those of the synthesized reference compound.

In extracts obtained by liquid-liquid extraction and enzymatic hydrolysis from five apple cultivars (Renao; Bedan; Peau de Chien; Noel des Champs; Red Delicious), chiral evaluation of free and glycosidically-bound octane-1,3-diol and 5(Z)-octene-1,3-diol, as well as ethyl 3-hydroxyoctanoate and ethyl 5(Z)-3-hydroxyoctenoate, was performed by multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC), combining a polar achiral column (DB-Wax) with a chiral main column (2,3-di-O-acetyl-6-O-tert. butyldimethylsilyl-beta-cyclodextrin/OV 1701). Comparison of retention times of synthesized optically-enriched reference compounds with isolated diols and hydroxyesters, revealed the (R)-configuration for the free diols in cvs.

As a part of the physical-technical program of the heavy-ion therapy project at GSI we have investigated the nuclear fragmentation of high-energy ion beams delivered by the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS, using water as a tissue-equivalent target. For a direct comparison of fragmentation properties, beams of 10B, 12C, 14N, and 16O were produced simultaneously as secondary beams from a primary 18O beam and separated in flight by magnetic beam analysis. The Z-distributions of beam fragments produced in the water target were measured via energy loss in a large ionisation chamber and a scintillator telescope.

The esterolytic activity of proteinases was measured in the gingival crevicular fluid from healthy and inflamed periodonts using BAEE as substrate. The BAEE-activity was significantly increased in crevices with inflamed periodonts.

The present study shows results aimed at determining whether levels of a trypsin-like protease in gingival crevicular fluid are associated with disease activity as assessed by the level of gingival inflammation and probing attachment loss. Maximum enzyme level was significantly elevated by groups with gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction. In a long-time study we find a decrease of enzyme activity with clinical therapy by scaling and root planning.

Two experiments were carried out with lactating Simmental x Red Holstein Friesian dairy cows. In the first experiment, 8 cows each received six injections at 4-wk intervals of either saline or 640 mg of prolonged-release bST. In the second experiment, 14 of 20 cows received 20 MJ NEL less than their daily requirement for 3 wk.

The isoxazoline derivative HAB 439 was tested for its enzyme inhibiting potency and was found to be an inhibitor of aminopeptidase B (IC50 = 22.5 micrograms/ml). In further immunopharmacological experiments its efficacy to stimulate cell-mediated immunity was evaluated.

A new type of blood pump was tested in calves for 6 hours. The pump consists of a rigid housing with a trochoidal internal surface, an inlet and outlet, and two lateral walls. A two-corner piston rotating on an eccentric shaft, describes a trochoidal path, thus creating a gap seal, the gap measuring a constant 10-35 microns.

In the fourth edition of the UICC guidelines for TNM classification (valid since January 1st, 1987), the organ "maxillary sinus" has been indicated for the first time within the category "head and neck". This decision made by UICC to consider the maxillary sinus alone is insufficient and contradictory--the reasons are discussed. The AO (Working Group for Clinical Oncology)/ORL will therefore maintain its classification considering the functional unity of the organ "inner nose and paranasal sinuses", which has proved its great worth in 1363 cases treated during the period from 1972 through 1987.

The synthesis and antibacterial activity in vitro of 7-(2-heteroarylacetamido)-3-[(2,3- cyclopentenopyridinium)methyl]cephalosporins and of some related compounds with different ammonium functions in 3'-position are described. The 7-[5-amino-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl] and the 7-[4-aminopyrimidin-2-yl] analogues of cefpirome and compounds with 3-aliphatic ammoniummethyl functions have excellent antibacterial activity. Cephalosporins with different N-heterocycles other than pyridine in 3'-position are less active than their 3-pyridiniummethyl analogues.

During a 1-year period, three patients presented with acute traumatic thrombosis of the common or external iliac artery concomitant with a massive crush injury to the pelvis. All had vascular compromise of the involved extremity on initial physical examination, but in two patients with open pelvic trauma, exsanguination, major visceral injury, hypothermia, and a coagulopathy precluded emergency vascular reconstruction. Both required hindquarter amputation for adequate debridement.

7-[2-(2-Aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-(Z)-oxyiminoacetamido]-3-[(s ubs tituted-1-pyridinio)methyl]ceph-3-em-4-carboxylates II are a group of beta-lactam antibiotics with extraordinary high antibacterial activity. The promising member of this group, cefpirome (HR 810, II-1) is a candidate for clinical use. Synthetic pathways to II starting from cefotaxime derivatives I or 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) are described.
