Recent discoveries of mcr and mcr-like genes in genomes from diverse archaeal lineages suggest that methane metabolism is an ancient pathway with a complicated evolutionary history. One conventional view is that methanogenesis is an ancestral metabolism of the class Thermoplasmata. Through comparative genomic analysis of 12 Thermoplasmata metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) basal to the Methanomassiliicoccales, we show that these microorganisms do not encode the genes required for methanogenesis.

For decades, biologists have relied on software to visualize and interpret imaging data. As techniques for acquiring images increase in complexity, resulting in larger multidimensional datasets, imaging software must adapt. ImageJ is an open-source image analysis software platform that has aided researchers with a variety of image analysis applications, driven mainly by engaged and collaborative user and developer communities.

Background: High costs of hospitalization may contribute to financial difficulties for some families.

Objective: To examine the prevalence of financial distress and medical financial burden in families of hospitalized children and identify factors that can predict financial difficulties.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Cross-sectional survey of parents of hospitalized children at six children's hospitals between October 2017 and November 2018.

Objectives: The aim of this study was investigate the cranium dimensions of adult female rats, who suffered estrogen deficiency during the prepubertal stage, to assess the impact of estrogen deficiency on craniofacial morphology.

Material And Methods: Twenty-two female Wistar rats were divided into ovariectomy (OVX) (n = 11) and sham-operated control (n = 11) groups. Bilateral ovariectomy were performed in both groups at 21 days old (prepubertal stage), and rats were euthanized at an age of 63 days (post-pubertal stage).

Maternal immune activation (MIA) increases risk for neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring later in life through unknown causal mechanisms. Growing evidence implicates parvalbumin-containing GABAergic interneurons as a key target in rodent MIA models. We targeted a specific neurodevelopmental window of parvalbumin interneurons in a mouse MIA model to examine effects on spatial working memory, a key domain in ASD that can manifest as either impairments or improvements both clinically and in animal models.

Background: Bronchiolitis is often described to follow an expected clinical trajectory, with a peak in severity between days 3 and 5. This predicted trajectory may influence anticipatory guidance and clinical decision-making. We aimed to determine the association between day of illness at admission and outcomes, including hospital length of stay, receipt of positive-pressure ventilation, and total cough duration.

Molecular assessments at the single cell level can accelerate biological research by providing detailed assessments of cellular organization and tissue heterogeneity in both disease and health. The human kidney has complex multi-cellular states with varying functionality, much of which can now be completely harnessed with recent technological advances in tissue proteomics at a near single-cell level. We discuss the foundational steps in the first application of this mass spectrometry (MS) based proteomics method for analysis of sub-sections of the normal human kidney, as part of the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP).

Background: Access site complications are among the most common complications following peripheral vascular interventions. Previous studies have demonstrated a reduced rate of complications with ultrasound-guided vascular access (UGVA). The objective of this study is to evaluate the regional use of UGVA within the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI).

As the population ages, there is a growing burden owing to musculoskeletal diseases, such as knee osteoarthritis, and subsequent functional decline. In the absence of a cure, there is a need to identify factors amenable to intervention to prevent or slow this process. The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study cohort was developed for this purpose.

Article Synopsis
  • Zooplankton biodiversity assessment is important for understanding marine ecosystems and monitoring responses to environmental changes.
  • A study comparing metabarcoding to traditional methods in the Venice Lagoon found that metabarcoding identified significantly more taxa (224 vs. 88), especially for meroplanktonic species.
  • Both methods showed similar distribution patterns, but metabarcoding proved to be a faster and effective way to assess biodiversity, particularly in dynamic ecosystems where rapid detection of non-native species is necessary.

A surge of interest has been noted in the use of mobility data from mobile phones to monitor physical distancing and model the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Despite several years of research in this area, standard frameworks for aggregating and making use of different data streams from mobile phones are scarce and difficult to generalise across data providers. Here, we examine aggregation principles and procedures for different mobile phone data streams and describe a common syntax for how aggregated data are used in research and policy.

Aim: To describe the nutritional status of children with cerebral palsy (CP) from rehabilitation and therapeutic centers in Argentina, and to analyze their risk of undernutrition based on their Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level.

Method: This was a cross-sectional study with data collected from 321 children (196 males, 125 females) with CP age 2 to 19 years (mean age 9y 3mo, SD 4y 5mo) from 17 rehabilitation and therapeutic centers in five Argentine provinces. Nutritional status was defined by height, weight, and body mass index for age z-scores using World Health Organization growth charts.

Over 20 years of accumulated evidence has shown that the major female sex hormone 17β-estradiol can enhance cognitive functioning. However, the utility of estradiol as a therapeutic cognitive enhancer is hindered by its unwanted peripheral effects (carcinogenic). Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) avoid the unwanted effects of estradiol by acting as estrogen receptor antagonists in some tissues such as breast and uterus, but as agonists in others such as bone, and are currently used for the treatment of osteoporosis.

"Hands-on" teaching is an important part of sports ultrasound (US) education in sports medicine fellowships. However, physical distancing requirements during a global pandemic have resulted in cancellation and/or postponement of "in-person" educational sessions, ultrasound conferences, and clinical diagnostic and interventional ultrasound cases that enhance ultrasound training. For "hands-on" sports ultrasound teaching to continue during these uncertain times, the educational model must be adapted.

Objective: The number of studies investigating and understanding the disease mechanisms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in human clinical trials have increased substantially over the last decade. Suitable clinical instruments for the measurement of disease progress and drug efficiency are mandatory, but currently not available, especially in the youngest patients. The aim of this study was to detect a reproducible pattern of muscle involvement in early stages potentially preceding evidence of motor regression.

Surgery is the definitive treatment for burn patients who sustain full-thickness burn injuries. Visual assessment of burn depth is made by the clinician early after injury but is accurate only up to 70% of the time among experienced surgeons. Collagen undergoes denaturation as a result of thermal injury; however, the association of collagen denaturation and cellular death in response to thermal injury is unknown.

Despite new advancements in surgical tools and therapies, exposure to immunosuppressive drugs related to non-immune and immune injuries can cause slow deterioration and premature failure of organ transplants. Diagnosis of these injuries by non-invasive urine monitoring would be a significant clinical advancement for patient management, especially in pediatric cohorts. We investigated the metabolomic profiles of biopsy matched urine samples from 310 unique kidney transplant recipients using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Background: Because of the impact of continuous pulse oximetry (CPOX) on the overdiagnosis of hypoxemia in bronchiolitis, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Choosing Wisely campaign have issued recommendations for intermittent monitoring. Parental preferences for monitoring may impact adoption of these recommendations, but these perspectives are poorly understood.

Methods: Using this cross-sectional survey, we explored parental perspectives on CPOX monitoring before discharge and 1 week after bronchiolitis hospitalizations.
