Diffuse cortical diffusion changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are characteristically ascribed to global cerebral anoxia, typically after cardiac arrest. Far from being pathognomonic, however, this neuroimaging finding is relatively nonspecific, and can manifest in a myriad of disease states including hypoxia, metabolic derangements, infections, seizure, toxic exposures, and neuroinflammation. While these various conditions can all produce a neuroimaging pattern of widespread cortical diffusion restriction, many of these underlying causes do have subtly unique imaging features that are appreciable on MRI and can be of clinical and diagnostic utility.

Current methods for detecting mutations in Fanconi anemia (FA)-suspected patients are inefficient and often miss mutations. Angelman syndrome (AS) is caused by reduced or absent expression of the maternally inherited ubiquitin protein ligase 3A gene (UBE3A), which maps to chromosome 15q11-q13. UBE3A is subject to genomic imprinting in neurons in most regions of the brain. Expression of UBE3A from the maternal chromosome is essential to prevent AS, because the paternally inherited gene is not expressed, probably mediated by antisense UBE3A RNA.

Eleven healthy subjects received single oral doses of placebo, 2 mg diazepam, 5 mg diazepam, and 10 mg diazepam in a randomized four-way crossover study. Plasma diazepam levels, the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and fraction of total electroencephalographic (EEG) amplitude falling in the sigma plus beta (13 to 31 Hz) frequency range were determined during the 12 hours after drug administration. Peak plasma diazepam concentration and area under the 12-hour curve were proportional to dose; time of peak was independent of dose.

Eye evaluations before and after 24 weeks of treatment with either ibuprofen (Motrin) or aspirin did not show eye toxicity with either drug in a double-blind study of 78 patients with osteoarthritis. The possibility of eye complications resulting from ibuprofen therapy suggested in two earlier reports has not been confirmed in clinical usage in other countries or in clinical trials in the United States.
