Due to recent technological progresses, Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) are currently extensively studied in order to define their diagnostic, prognostic and predictive value. We review here the different detection techniques and their clinical results in breast cancer patients.

Context: Rurality is associated with a number of direct and indirect causes of eye disease. The direct causes are best described as lifestyle factors, such as exposure to UV light and occupational risks. Indirect factors are those where the occurrence of a predisposition is magnified due to rural population distributions, for example gender and age.

The present study addressed the question whether ExoU, a Pseudomonas aeruginosa toxin with phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity, may induce airway epithelial cells to overexpress tissue factor (TF) and exhibit a procoagulant phenotype. Cells from the human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B line were infected with an ExoU-producing P. aeruginosa strain, pre-treated or not with the cytosolic PLA2 inhibitor methylarachidonyl fluorophosphate (MAFP), or with two ExoU-deficient mutants.

This report addressed the question whether ExoU stimulation of airway epithelial cells may contribute to the inflammatory response detected in the course of Pseudomonas aeruginosa respiratory infections. Infection with PA103 P. aeruginosa elicited a potent release of IL-6 and IL-8, as well as of arachidonic acid (AA) and PGE(2) that was reduced by the bacterial treatment with MAFP, a cPLA(2) inhibitor.

To increase knowledge of the pathogenic potential of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), we investigated the effects of reference strains of the nine BCC species on human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro. B. multivorans exhibited the highest rates of adherence to and internalization by host cells.

Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in the immune response to bacterial pathogens. To investigate the role of this system in the context of leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were treated with the proteasome inhibitor MG132 to assess the levels of apoptosis and cytokine secretion. The results showed that the inhibition of proteasome activity significantly reduced M.

To obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the up-regulation of the Fas apoptotic signaling cascade induced by P. aeruginosa type III secretion system (TTSS), human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were infected with P. aeruginosa PAO-1 or its TTSS-negative mutant PAO-1::exsA.

As Pseudomonas aeruginosa ExoU possesses two functional blocks of homology to calcium-independent (iPLA(2)) and cytosolic phospholipase A(2) (cPLA(2)), we addressed the question whether it would exhibit a proinflammatory activity by enhancing the synthesis of eicosanoids by host organisms. Endothelial cells from the HMEC-1 line infected with the ExoU-producing PA103 strain exhibited a potent release of arachidonic acid (AA) that could be significantly inhibited by methyl arachidonyl fluorophosphonate (MAFP), a specific PLA(2) inhibitor, as well as significant amounts of the cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived prostaglandins PGE(2) and PGI(2). Cells infected with an isogenic mutant defective in ExoU synthesis did not differ from non-infected cells in the AA release and produced prostanoids in significantly lower concentrations.

ExoU PLA2-like activity has been shown to account for membrane lysis and acute death of infected cells. Translocation of effector proteins by the type III secretion systems depends on close contact between microbial and host cells. Our finding that both the ExoU-producing PA103 Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its mutant obtained by deletion of exoU adhered poorly to endothelial cells (EC) led to the hypothesis that, in some cells, the amount of injected toxin may not be enough to induce cell lysis but cells would suffer from a long-term effect of ExoU intoxication.

Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy, invades peripheral nerve Schwann cells, resulting in deformities associated with this disease. NF-kappaB is an important transcription factor involved in the regulation of host immune antimicrobial responses. We aimed in this work to investigate NF-kappaB signaling pathways in the human ST88-14 Schwannoma cell line infected with M.

This research was conducted to identify the most efficient biomass out of five different types of biomass sources for anaerobic treatment of Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW). This study was first focused on examining the selected biomass in anaerobic batch systems with sodium acetate solutions (control study). Then, the different types of biomass were tested with raw OMW (water-diluted) and with pretreated OMW by coagulation-flocculation using Poly Aluminum Chloride (PACl) combined with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2).

We have previously shown that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) can be activated by IFNgamma plus TNFalpha to kill intracellular (IC) Pseudomonas aeruginosa through production of reactive oxygen intermediate, but the cumulative effects of cytokine activation and bacterial infection on host cells has not been extensively addressed. In this study we investigated the fate of IFNgamma plus TNFalpha-activated HUVEC that have harboured IC bacteria for up to 24 h. At 10 h, the endothelial cell killing of P.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common agent of septicemia, enters into human endothelial cellsin vitro but the effects of bacterial infection have not been addressed properly. In this study, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were infected by the noninvasive PA103 and the invasive PAO1 P. aeruginosa strains and the viability of infected cells was assessed by the methyltiazole tetrazolium (MTT) assay.

Purpose: This paper reports the results of a comprehensive noise survey of the Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopter environment and provides an assessment of the hearing protection devices worn by Australian Army personnel exposed to that environment.

Methods And Results: At-ear noise levels were measured at 4 positions in the cabin of the Black Hawk under various flight conditions and at 13 positions outside the Black Hawk under various ground running conditions using the Head Acoustic Measurement System (Head, GmbH). The attenuation properties of the hearing protection devices (HPDs) normally worn by aircrew and maintenance crews (the ALPHA helmet and the Roanwell MX-2507 Communications headset) were also assessed.

Norms for the Arousability Predisposition Scale (APS; S. Coren, 1990) obtained from an Australian university sample are presented. The construct tapped by the APS is reviewed, with state and trait anxiety, sex, and age examined as possible determinants of individual arousability predisposition.

The pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa disseminated infections depends on bacterial interaction with blood vessels. We have hypothesized that in order to traverse the endothelial barrier, bacteria would have to adhere to and damage endothelial cells. To test this hypothesis, we studied the adherence to human endothelial cells in primary culture of the piliated P.

Three groups, with 10 sixty-day-old male rats each, were given dietary levels of technical hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) 0, 0.9 and 900 ppm for 90 days. Observations were made on blood glucose, live glycogen and glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase), organ weights, histology and histochemistry of different tissues.
