Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is adapting to continuous presence in humans. Transitions to endemic infection patterns are associated with changes in the spike (S) proteins that direct virus-cell entry. These changes generate antigenic drift and thereby allow virus maintenance in the face of prevalent human antiviral antibodies.

Tropical floodplain lakes are increasingly impacted by human activities, yet their pathways of spatial and temporal degradation, particularly under varying hydrological connectivity regimes and climate change, remain poorly understood. This study examines surface-sediment samples and Pb-dated sediment cores from six floodplain lakes, representing a gradient in hydrological connectivity in the lower Magdalena River Basin, Colombia. We analysed temporal and spatial variations in several sediment biogeochemical indicators: the concentration and flux of nutrients, heavy metals, and organic matter (OM), and redox conditions, flooding and erosion.

MDMA is a promising adjunct to psychotherapy and has well-known abuse liability, although less than other amphetamine analogs. While the reinforcing dopamine (DA)-releasing properties of MDMA are on par with methamphetamine (METH), MDMA is a far more potent serotonin (5-HT) releaser, via the 5-HT transporter (SERT). MDMA-mediated 5-HT release in a major reward center, the nucleus accumbens (NAc), drives prosocial behaviors via 5-HTR activation.

The functional properties of edible insects can be explored by a joint use of novel technologies. This work applied varied pre-treatments (ultra-sound-assisted extraction, UAE; microwave-assisted extraction, MAE; temperature-assisted extraction, TAE; CO2-assisted extraction) and solvents (water, ethanol, water:ethanol) in Tenebrio molitor beetles to enhance the extraction of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. An enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) was performed in wet and treated biomasses to determine the protein hydrolysis.

  • The study explores the differences in gut microbiota and fiber digestion between lower termites (LT), which have cellulolytic flagellates, and higher termites (HT), which do not.
  • It identifies specific bacterial lineages responsible for fiber breakdown, revealing that Bacteroidota and Spirochaetota dominate the lignocellulolytic activity in LT, while Fibrobacterota and Spirochaetota take over in HT.
  • The findings highlight the importance of oxygen in the breakdown of cellulose and lignin in termite guts, suggesting a more complex symbiotic relationship than previously understood.

Nucleus accumbens (NAc) deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been increasingly explored as a treatment modality for refractory neuropsychiatric disorders. Uncovering the accumbens network that is engaged by DBS is a critical step forward in understanding how modulating this important node impacts the broader mesocorticolimbic circuit. Using whole-brain clearing and unbiased, brain-wide neural activity mapping, we found that NAc DBS increases neural activity in a coordinated mesocorticolimbic network in mice.

  • ALS is a serious disease that weakens muscles as people age, and it has different effects on different people.
  • Researchers found that a protein called FGF21 is significantly increased in the muscles of people with ALS, and it seems to help protect nerve cells when there’s stress on them.
  • High levels of FGF21 might mean the disease progresses more slowly and can help people live longer and healthier.

Acetylxylan esterases (AXEs) are essential enzymes that break down the acetyl groups in acetylated xylan found in plant cell walls polysaccharides. They work synergistically with backbone-depolymerizing xylanolytic enzymes to accelerate the degradation of complex polysaccharides. In this study, we cloned the gene axeA, which encodes the acetylxylan esterase from Aspergillus nidulans FGSC A4 (AxeAN), into the pEXPYR expression vector and introduced it into the high protein-producing strain A.

Blood-feeding is crucial for the reproductive cycle of the mosquito , as well as for the transmission of arboviruses to hosts. It is postulated that blood meals may influence the mosquito microbiome but shifts in microbial diversity and function during digestion remain elusive. We used whole-genome shotgun metagenomics to monitor the midgut microbiome in 60 individual females of throughout digestion, after 12, 24, and 48 h following blood or sugar meals.

Tropical river deltas, and the social-ecological systems they sustain, are changing rapidly due to anthropogenic activity and climatic change. Baseline data to inform sustainable management options for resilient deltas is urgently needed and palaeolimnology (reconstructing past conditions from lake or wetland deposits) can provide crucial long-term perspectives needed to identify drivers and rates of change. We review how palaeolimnology can be a valuable tool for resource managers using three current issues facing tropical delta regions: hydrology and sediment supply, salinisation and nutrient pollution.

In the last two decades, several working groups in the international psychoanalytic community have been interested in the development of systematic tools for psychodynamic diagnosis, case formulation and treatment planning. Such psychodynamic diagnostic manuals are efforts to systematically integrate an enormous and rich amount of historically partialized and dispersed information, but which constitute the substantial contribution of psychoanalysis to the field of mental health. The aim of the present article is to provide an updated review on this kind of systematic tools for diagnosis, case formulation and therapeutic planning, designed for the field of psychodynamic approaches.

Epidemiological studies to better understand wheat blast (WB) spatial and temporal patterns were conducted in three field environments in Bolivia between 2019 and 2020. The temporal dynamics of wheat leaf blast (WB) and spike blast (WB) were best described by the logistic model compared with the Gompertz and exponential models. The nonlinear logistic infection rates were higher under defined inoculation in experiments two and three than under undefined inoculation in experiment one, and they were also higher for WB than for WB.
