Current evidence suggests that macroalgal-dominated habitats are important contributors to the oceanic carbon cycle, though the role of those formed by calcifiers remains controversial. Globally distributed coralline algal beds, built by pink coloured rhodoliths and maerl, cover extensive coastal shelf areas of the planet, but scarce information on their productivity, net carbon flux dynamics and carbonate deposits hampers assessing their contribution to the overall oceanic carbon cycle. Here, our data, covering large bathymetrical (2-51 m) and geographical ranges (53°N-27°S), show that coralline algal beds are highly productive habitats that can express substantial carbon uptake rates (28-1347 g C m day), which vary in function of light availability and species composition and exceed reported estimates for other major macroalgal habitats.

Harnessing the microbiome to benefit human health requires an initial step in determining the identity and function of causative microorganisms that affect specific host physiological functions. We show a functional screen of the bacterial microbiota from mice with low intestinal immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels; we identified a Gram-negative bacterium, proposed as , that induces and degrades IgA in the mouse intestine. Mice harboring are susceptible to infections and show poor mucosal repair.

The recruitment of eosinophils into lesions is frequently associated with a favorable evolution. A feasible effector for this process is eosinophil cationic protein (ECP, RNase 3), one of the main human eosinophil granule proteins, endowed with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, including parasites. ECP was active on promastigotes and axenic amastigotes (LC's = 3 and 16 μM, respectively) but, in contrast to the irreversible membrane damage caused on bacteria and reproduced by its -terminal peptides, it only induced a mild and transient plasma membrane destabilization on promastigotes.

Largemouth Bass virus (LMBV) first became a concern in Kansas when it was identified as a potential cause of decreased catch rates at Crawford State Fishing Lake in 2007. The discovery of LMBV in eight additional impoundments from 2008 to 2017 increased concern about the prevalence and effects of LMBV in Kansas. In response, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism tested 25 Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides impoundments for the presence of LMBV.
