An understanding of the risk of gene deletion and mutation posed by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is necessary for the identification of etiological reagents for many human diseases. Therefore, the characterization of the genetic traits caused by developmental exposure to EDCs is an important research subject. A new regenerative approach using embryonic stem cells (ESCs) holds promise for the development of stem-cell-based therapies and the identification of novel therapeutic agents against human diseases.

We report a case of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) originating in a rib. A 34-year-old woman was admitted to our medical department for evaluation of left rib pain and an abnormal shadow in the left 7th rib observed on chest radiography. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an osteolytic lesion involving the left 7th rib.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study assessed how accurately SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected in saliva samples, comparing those treated with guanidine and without, against traditional nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) used as a reference.
  • - Results showed that raw saliva had a 100% sensitivity for detecting the virus, while the sensitivity for saliva treated with guanidine-based and guanidine-free inactivators was lower, at 65.9% and 82.9% respectively.
  • - Despite the reduced sensitivity in treated saliva, the study found that these inactivated samples could still provide reliable results for diagnosing COVID-19, which is beneficial for minimizing the risk of virus transmission.

This study aimed to investigate differences in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), at admission and discharge, as well as the medical costs of pyelonephritis in older adults in Japan. Patients hospitalized for pyelonephritis between January 1, 2013 and March 31, 2019, were retrospectively enrolled. The inclusion criteria were urine culture within 48 h of admission with > 104 colony-forming units/mL of and symptoms of pyelonephritis.

Article Synopsis
  • T peripheral helper (Tph) cells are linked to B cell activation and play a role in autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with four defined subsets: Tph1, Tph2, Tph17, and Tph1-17.
  • The Tph1 and Tph17 subsets show high production of IL21, indicating they help B cells, while Tph2 and Tph1-17 produce low amounts of IL21 but have features of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, such as high levels of CX3CR1 and GZMB.
  • In SLE patients, Tph1 and Tph2 subsets are more frequent and linked to disease activity; Tph1

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is considered less safe in patients with reduced ejection fraction (EF), an impression based on older data. Whether the safety and durability of contemporary PCI are different in patients with reduced EF compared with normal EF patients is unknown.

Methods: Patients from the BIOFLOW II, IV and V clinical trials were grouped as normal EF (≥50%) and reduced EF (30%-50%).

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have received considerable attention as ideal biomarkers for kidney diseases. Most reports have focused on urinary EVs, that are mainly derived from the cells in the urinary tract. However, the detection and the application of kidney-derived EVs in plasma remains uncertain.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) can present with extraglandular organs, such as interstitial lung disease (ILD). Anti-SS-A antibody is frequently found in SS cases, whereas anti-centromere antibody (ACA) is detected in some SS cases. Notably, the anti-SS-A and ACA double-positive cases exhibited distinct features with a higher prevalence of ILD.

Background: There have been few reports showing the relationship between blood pressure (BP) measured at clinics preoperatively and BP measured before anesthetic intubation/induction. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between BP measured at different times and settings preoperatively and BP measured before intubation/induction.

Methods: A total of 182 patients who underwent general anesthesia between March 2021 and April 2022 in a university hospital were examined.

Background/aim: The relationship between the severity of cardioembolic stroke (CES) and oral anticoagulant (OAC) treatment before stroke onset in very elderly (≥80 years) patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) at high bleeding risk remains unknown.

Patients And Methods: A total of 364 consecutive patients (≥80 years) with CES and NVAF within 48 h following stroke onset were investigated. High bleeding risk was defined as follows: Bleeding history, renal dysfunction (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min), low body weight (≤45 kg), and antiplatelet or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use.

Background: To clarify the clinical roles of changes in testosterone (T) levels with a cut-off level of 20 ng/dL as predictive factors for prostate cancer patients treated with degarelix acetate.

Methods: A total of 120 prostate cancer patients who received hormone therapies with gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist degarelix acetate were retrospectively analyzed. The predictive values of nadir T levels, max T levels, T bounce, and other clinical factors were evaluated for overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and progression-free survival (PFS).

Background: HIV testing is a critical step to accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART) because early diagnosis can facilitate earlier initiation of ART. This study presents aggregated data of individuals who self-reported being HIV-positive but subsequently tested HIV-negative during nationally representative Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment surveys conducted in 11 countries from 2015 to 2018.

Method: Survey participants aged 15 years or older were interviewed by trained personnel using a standard questionnaire to determine HIV testing history and self-reported HIV status.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined 354 patients with primary small bowel adenocarcinoma (PSBA) in Japan, revealing a median age of 67 years and a majority being male (61.6%).
  • The majority of tumors were located in the jejunum (66.2%) and ileum (30.4%), with over 76% of patients presenting symptoms at diagnosis, often at an advanced stage.
  • The research found that clinical stage was the main predictor of disease-specific survival, emphasizing the importance of early detection for better patient outcomes.

  • The study evaluated the LC16m8 vaccine's safety and effectiveness against the monkeypox virus (MPXV) in 50 healthy adults over 168 days.
  • On day 28, the vaccine showed strong immunogenicity, with 72% to 88% seroconversion rates, although these rates declined by day 168.
  • Adverse events were common but mostly mild, and no serious safety issues or cases of monkeypox were reported during the study period.

  • * This study analyzed a cohort of 101 esophageal cancer patients treated with DCF followed by surgery, categorizing them into four histological groups based on tumor and lymph node status to evaluate survival outcomes.
  • * Results indicated that patients with no lymph node involvement (ypN0) had similar survival rates regardless of tumor presence, while those with positive lymph nodes (ypN+) had significantly worse prognoses, suggesting that lymph node status is crucial for predicting patient outcomes.

  • Patients who are immunosuppressed, like kidney transplant recipients, typically have lower antibody responses after SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations, but responses improve with more doses.
  • In a study of Japanese kidney transplant patients, antibody positivity rates increased to 75.0% after the fourth dose and 81.5% after the fifth dose.
  • Those who developed antibodies after their fourth vaccination had higher body mass index and better kidney function, suggesting that further doses are beneficial for improving immunity against COVID-19.

Background: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), the most common form of hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), currently lacks disease-modifying treatments. Adrenomedullin (AM), a vasoactive peptide with angiogenic, vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative properties, shows potential effects on the neuro-glial-vascular unit.

Objective: The AdrenoMedullin for CADASIL (AMCAD) study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of AM in patients with CADASIL.
