Background: The aim of our present study was to establish new reference intervals for thyrotropin (TSH) and thyroid hormones based on National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) criteria and regular thyroid ultrasonography. We also assessed the effect of potentially confounding factors to modulate the limits of these intervals.
Methods: We investigated 870 apparently healthy persons and excluded, step by step, those with a family history of thyroid disease, pathologic thyroid ultrasonography results, and increased anti-thyroid peroxidase or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies.
Background And Study Aims: The Erlangen Active Simulator for Interventional Endoscopy (EASIE) was introduced in 1997 as a training model for interventional endoscopy. Objective evidence of the benefits of training with this model has not previously been published. As part of two long-term projects, the benefits of a 1-day training course with the "compactEASIE" simulator were evaluated.

We asked ourselves if the suggested prognostic model provides the same predictive power of data from an independent hospital. Furthermore, we investigated whether age itself or age-associated comorbidity causes an unfavorable prognostic effect.

Fifty-nine patients with advanced refractory malignancy (32 breast cancer, 10 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 6 germ cell tumors, 4 Hodgkin disease, 4 ovarian cancer, 2 sarcoma, and 1 unknown primary adenocarcinoma) with a median of 3 prior chemotherapy regimens and a median of 3 organs involved were enrolled. Treatment included docetaxel (150-550 mg/m2 infused over 2 hours on day -6), melphalan (150-165 mg/m2 infused over 15 minutes from day -5 to -3), and carboplatin (1000-1300 mg/m2 as a 72-hour continuous infusion from day -5).

Objective evidence of the benefits of training with these models is limited.

Studies in mice demonstrated that deficiency of protein Z dramatically increases the prothrombotic tendency of factor V Leiden mutation. This finding was confirmed by initial results in humans, indicating that thromboembolism in factor V Leiden patients with lowered protein Z level occurs earlier than in patients with normal protein Z levels.

Marine organisms have attracted much attention as a source of pharmacological tools or potential drugs. We have produced and screened a library of sponge extracts in search of biologically active compounds that may contain useful pharmaceutical lead structures. Sponges were collected from various locations and their aqueous extracts were freeze dried.

Despite low sequence identity, the overall 3D fold of Ngb and Mb is very similar. Unlike in Mb, in Ngb the sixth coordination position of the heme iron is occupied by the distal histidine, in the absence of an exogenous ligand.

Methods: Within a randomised controlled study design implemented at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Dresden University of Technology, 99 general psychiatric patients received conventional inpatient treatment and 92 patients received acute day hospital treatment. At up to four time-points during the index-treatment episode patients were assessed at different levels of outcome: Psychopathology was rated by researchers using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (24-Item-Version), and patients evaluated their satisfaction with treatment (Patientenbogen zur Behandlungszufriedenheit); at admission and discharge patients also assessed their subjective quality of life (Manchester Assessment of Quality of Life).

Purpose: Verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the most effective treatment for age-related macular degeneration, using laser activation of a photosensitizing dye to achieve closure of choroidal neovascularization. Although PDT preferentially affects pathologic vessels, it can also cause collateral damage to the overlying retina. In the current study, it was found that the neuroprotective agent brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) reduces this retinal damage.

In the desert southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, USA; and northern Mexico), there are five species of skunks; four of which can occur in sympatry. To better understand the ecology of skunk rabies in these areas, it is imperative that species be properly identified.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA functional fluorescent neurokinin NK2 receptor, EGFP-NK2, was previously used to follow, by fluorescence resonance energy transfer measurements in living cells, the binding of its fluorescently labeled agonist, bodipy-neurokinin A (NKA). Local agonist application suggested that the activation and desensitization of the NK2 receptors were compartmentalized at the level of the plasma membrane. In this study, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiments are carried out at variable observation radius (vrFRAP) to probe EGFP-NK2 receptor mobility and confinement.

Using the example of Vaska's complex, we present here evidence by NMR that the solvent is not necessary for these reactions to occur. Thus, solid frozen solutions or polycrystalline powdered samples of homogeneous catalysts may become heterogeneous catalysts.

It is most often caused by mutations in the HJV gene and rarely in the HAMP gene. Hepcidin is considered to constitute a negative regulator of iron absorption, and its production is increased in inflammatory states and iron overload.

PPAR gamma ligands, which include the naturally occurring PG metabolite 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-PGJ(2) (15d-PGJ(2)), as well as thiazolidinediones, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity. The PPAR alpha agonists, gemfibrozil, ciprofibrate, and fenofibrate, have an excellent track history as oral agents used to treat hypertriglyceridemia.

Cardiac effects of catecholamines on the L-type calcium channel depend on beta-adrenoceptor subtype (beta(1)- vs. beta(2)-adrenoceptor). Chronic overexpression of these receptors leads to hypertrophy and early death at moderate (beta(1)) or excessive (beta(2)) levels of overexpression respectively.

The following article deals with the different images of modern biotechnology created by the German press in the last decade of the twentieth century. To describe these images we have chosen the theoretical concept of framing, which in general denotes the idea that the media deal with certain issues in different ways and that therefore the coverage offers different perspectives to the reader. We understand a frame as a certain pattern of a text that is composed of several different text elements.
