Three-dimensional (3D) core-shell heterostructured NiS@MnOH nanorods grown on nickel foam (NiS@MnOH/NF) were successfully fabricated via a simple hydrothermal reaction and a subsequent electrodeposition process. The fabricated NiS@MnOH/NF shows outstanding bifunctional activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, as well as overall-water-splitting performance. The main origins are the interface engineering of NiS@MnOH, the shell-protection characteristic of MnOH, and the 3D open nanorod structure, which remarkably endow the electrocatalyst with high activity and stability.

New treatment options, such as targeted therapies, are urgently needed for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The current study focuses on demonstrating the therapeutic efficacies of APG-1252-M1 (an active form of the prodrug, APG-1252 or pelcitoclax), a highly potent Bcl-2/Bcl-X dual inhibitor in clinical trials, against CRC and understanding the underlying mechanisms. APG-1252-M1 effectively decreased the survival of CRC cell lines, particularly those expressing relatively low levels of Mcl-1, with the induction of apoptosis.

Reasonable regulation and synthesis of hollow nanostructure materials can provide a promising electrode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, utilizing a metal-organic framework (MOF, ZIF-67) as the raw material and template, a composite of Co S with a carbon shell is successfully formed through a hydrothermal vulcanization and a subsequent high temperature sintering process. The as-obtained Co S (700) material sintered at 700 °C has a large specific surface area, and at the same time possesses a hollow carbon shell structure.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on intriguing magnetic properties of quasiferroelectric orthochromates. Large single crystals of the family of RECrO (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds were successfully grown. Neutron Laue study indicates a good quality of the obtained single crystals.

Polymerization of deoxygenated sickle hemoglobin (HbS) leads to erythrocyte sickling. Enhancing activity of the erythrocyte glycolytic pathway has anti-sickling potential as this reduces 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) and increases ATP, factors that decrease HbS polymerization and improve erythrocyte membrane integrity. These factors can be modulated by mitapivat, which activates erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PKR) and improves sickling kinetics in SCD patients.

Purpose: We evaluated the use of massive transformer-based language models to predict glaucoma progression requiring surgery using ophthalmology clinical notes from electronic health records (EHRs).

Methods: Ophthalmology clinical notes for 4512 glaucoma patients at a single center from 2008 to 2020 were identified from the EHRs. Four different pre-trained Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based models were fine-tuned on ophthalmology clinical notes from the patients' first 120 days of follow-up for the task of predicting which patients would require glaucoma surgery.
