Comparison of CT findings between basaloid squamous cell carcinoma and non-basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

This study aimed to compare computed tomography (CT) findings between basaloid lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and non-basaloid SCC. From July 2003 to April 2021, 39 patients with surgically proven basaloid SCC were identified. For comparison, 161 patients with surgically proven non-basaloid SCC from June 2018 to January 2019 were selected consecutively.

The Inferior Cerebellar Peduncle Sign: A Novel Imaging Marker for Differentiating Multiple System Atrophy Cerebellar Type from Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

Background And Purpose: The hot cross bun (HCB) sign is a hallmark feature of multiple system atrophy with predominant cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C), typically observed in advanced stages of the disease; however, it can also present in other conditions such as spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), making the differentiation challenging. The middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) sign may be observed in various medical conditions and in healthy individuals. We hypothesized that the inferior cerebellar peduncle (ICP), known to be affected in MSA-C, may exhibit hyperintensity on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging, potentially aiding in differentiating MSA-C from SCA.

Development of eco-friendly pretreatment processes for high-purity silicon recovery from end-of-life photovoltaic modules.

This study examines the efficacy of photovoltaic (PV) recycling processes and technologies for the recovery of high-purity silicon powder from waste solar modules. In order to facilitate the simplification of complex processes, such as the conventional nitric acid dissolution, solvent and ultrasonic irradiation, and solvent dissolution, a variety of mechanical separation processes have been established. These processes are designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the aforementioned processes.

Does the Sequence of Bimaxillary Orthognathic Surgery Affect Accuracy in Skeletal Class III Patients?

Background: It is necessary to determine whether the sequence of maxillary and mandibular surgeries in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery affects the accuracy of surgical outcomes.

Purpose: The study aimed to measure and compare the accuracy among patients who underwent maxilla-first versus mandible-first bimaxillary surgery to correct a class III skeletal pattern.

Study Design, Setting, Sample: This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients treated by a single surgeon at one center using Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy surgery.

Differential diagnosis of cemento-osseous dysplasia and periapical cyst using texture analysis of CBCT.

Background: Radiolucencies found at the root apex in patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) may be mistaken for periapical cysts (PC) of endodontic origin. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of quantitative texture analysis using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to differentiate between COD and PC.

Methods: Patients who underwent CBCT at Wonkwang University Daejeon Dental Hospital between January 2019 and December 2022 and were diagnosed with COD and PC by clinical, radiologic, and, if necessary, histopathologic examination were included.

Effects of Hormone Replacement Therapy on Bone Mineral Density in Korean Adults With Turner Syndrome.

Background: Turner syndrome (TS) is a common chromosomal abnormality, which is caused by loss of all or part of one X chromosome. Hormone replacement therapy in TS is important in terms of puberty, growth and prevention of osteoporosis however, such a study has never been conducted in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to determine relationship between the starting age, duration of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in TS and develop a hormone replacement protocol suitable for the situation in Korea.

Health-related quality of life of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage who were classified as having "good outcomes".

Background: This study aimed to understand the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) classified as having "good outcomes" and determine associated sociodemographic, psychological, and clinical factors.

Methods: Participants were 86 patients with aSAH with modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores of 0-2 in our hospital between February 2003 and April 2014. Participants completed self-report questionnaires examining sociodemographic characteristics and the following self-rating scales: the hospital anxiety and depression scale, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and EuroQoL-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D).

Ceramide synthase 4 overexpression exerts oncogenic properties in breast cancer.

Background: Ceramide, a bioactive signaling sphingolipid, has long been implicated in cancer. Members of the ceramide synthase (CerS) family determine the acyl chain lengths of ceramides, with ceramide synthase 4 (CerS4) primarily generating C18-C20-ceramide. Although CerS4 is known to be overexpressed in breast cancer, its role in breast cancer pathogenesis is not well established.

Early-phase amyloid PET image is reported to be similar to PET image. This study aimed to generate PET images from F-florbetaben PET (PET) images using a generative adversarial network (GAN) and compare the generated PET (PET) with real PET (PET) images using the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Association between intrarenal venous flow from Doppler ultrasonography and acute kidney injury in patients with sepsis in critical care: a prospective, exploratory observational study.

Background: Intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) patterns assessed using Doppler renal ultrasonography are real-time bedside visualizations of renal vein hemodynamics. Although this technique has the potential to detect renal congestion during sepsis resuscitation, there have been few studies on this method. We aimed to examine the relationship between IRVF patterns, clinical parameters, and outcomes in critically ill adult patients with sepsis.

Development and validation of sensitive BCR::ABL1 fusion gene quantitation using next-generation sequencing.

Background: BCR::ABL1 fusion has significant prognostic value and is screened for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) disease monitoring as a part of routine molecular testing. To overcome the limitations of the current standard real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RQ-PCR), we designed and validated a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based assay to quantify BCR::ABL1 and ABL1 transcript copy numbers.

Methods: After PCR amplification of the target sequence, deep sequencing was performed using an Illumina Nextseq 550Dx sequencer and in-house-designed bioinformatics pipeline.

Clinical significance of drug cessation on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients with osteoporosis.

Objectives: Suspending bisphosphonates (BPs) to reduce the risk and severity of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) remains controversial. In this study, we quantitatively evaluated the clinical significance of BP suspension before surgery in osteoporosis patients with MRONJ.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed 24 osteoporosis patients with MRONJ who were treated from 2012 to 2020 at Seoul National University Dental Hospital and compared the treatment outcomes of those who suspended BPs with those who did not.

Background And Objectives: COVID-19-related inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy may increase the bleeding risk and lower the efficacy of revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to evaluate the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS and COVID-19.

Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study of consecutive patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT) between March 2020 and June 2021 tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection.

Normalized CBV, volume transfer constant, and ADC of the nonenhancing T2 high-signal-intensity lesions were evaluated using K-means clustering.

Background: New approaches for the prevention and elimination of malaria, a leading cause of illness and death among infants and young children globally, are needed.

Methods: We conducted a phase 1 clinical trial to assess the safety and pharmacokinetics of L9LS, a next-generation antimalarial monoclonal antibody, and its protective efficacy against controlled human malaria infection in healthy adults who had never had malaria or received a vaccine for malaria. The participants received L9LS either intravenously or subcutaneously at a dose of 1 mg, 5 mg, or 20 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Evaluation of ocular surface parameters in dogs with and without meibomian gland dysfunction.

Background: Interest in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is growing in veterinary medicine. However, research on MGD in dogs is lacking. Methods: Mandibular first molars and incisors were evaluated using CBCT images of 150 patients. Mandibular first molars were classified according to the presence or absence of DLR.

The green rice leafhopper (GRH, Uhler) is one of the most important insect pests causing serious damage to rice production and yield loss in East Asia. Prior to performing RNA-Seq analysis, we conducted an electrical penetration graph (EPG) test to investigate the feeding behavior of GRH on Ilpum (recurrent parent, GRH-susceptible cultivar), a near-isogenic line (NIL carrying ) compared to the donor parent (Shingwang). Then, we conducted a transcriptome-wide analysis of GRH-responsive genes in Ilpum and NIL, which was followed by the validation of RNA-Seq data by qPCR.

Effect of mydriasis with topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

This study aimed to investigate the effect of mydriasis using topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography (ERG) in domestic pigeons (Columba livia). Scotopic mixed rod and cone, photopic cone, and photopic flicker ERG were performed on nine eyes of nine healthy adult pigeons under sedation. Each pigeon underwent two sets of ERG recordings.

Palmar Musculature: Does It Affect the Development of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? A Pilot Study.

 The etiology of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is multifactorial. Static mechanical characteristics of CTS have been described, but dynamic (muscular) parameters remain obscure. We believe that musculature overlying the transverse carpal ligament may have an effect on carpal tunnel pressure and may explain the prevalence of CTS in manual workers.

Decompressive effects of draining tube on suppurative and sclerosing osteomyelitis in the jaw.

Background: Osteomyelitis (OM) in the jaw is an inflammatory disease of osseous tissue that begins in the medullary space and progressively expands to the cortical portion of the bone, the Haversian system, the periosteum and the overlying soft tissue. Despite advances in dental and medical care, OM persists and is of important concern in modern medicine. Active negative pressure is known to prevent post-operative hematoma; decrease the number of bacterial pathogens, accumulation of toxins, and necrotic tissue; and promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis with the use of a draining tube such as the Jackson-Pratt (JP) or Hemovac.

Arsenic trioxide therapy predisposes to herpes zoster reactivation despite minimally myelosuppressive therapy.

Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) is a unique subtype of acute myeloid leukemia that is highly responsive to minimally myelosuppressive therapy with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO). We and others have observed a higher than expected incidence of herpes zoster reactivation in APL patients treated with ATO. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has been using ATO since 1997 in all relapsed APL patients, and more recently has included it in our front-line APL regimens.
