Background And Purpose: To present the clinical outcomes of two series of patients treated with carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) and definitive photon radiotherapy (RT) for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck (HN-ACC).

Material And Methods: The first cohort of six patients was referred from Oslo University Hospital (OUS) to Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO, Pavia, Italy) for CIRT in 2014-2017. The second cohort included 18 patients treated with definitive photon RT at OUS in 2005-2017.

Background: In a per-protocol analysis of molecularly profiled patients with treatment-refractory, end-stage cancer discussed at the National Molecular Tumor Board (NMTB), we aimed to assess the overall survival (OS) outcome of targeted treatment compared with no targeted treatment.

Materials And Methods: Patients were prospectively included at a single oncological center. Whole exome and RNA sequencing (tumor-normal) were carried out, and cases were presented at the NMTB for discussion of targeted treatment.

Saliva samples offer the possibility to obtain stress-free non-invasive samples, also for home-testing, especially useful when blood collection is either undesirable or difficult. The aim of this work was to develop an LC-MS/MS method to determine clinically relevant steroid hormones cortisol, cortisone, 11-deoxycortisol, 21-deoxycortisol, 17OH-progesterone, aldosterone, corticosterone, deoxycorticosterone, testosterone, androstenedione, DHEAS, DHEA, 17OH-pregnenolone, betamethasone and dexamethasone. A special effort was made to adapt the method to neonatal population with respect to choice of saliva as matrix, low sample volumes, selection of analytes and multiplexing.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with rare lipid disorders have specific sterols that accumulate in their blood, making accurate measurement crucial for diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
  • Existing methods to test sterols can be complicated and time-consuming, limiting access to tests in many areas.
  • A new, simple method using isotope-dilution LC-MS/MS was developed to quickly extract and measure sterols in blood, validated through analysis of serum samples from both healthy controls and patients, showing significant differences in sterol levels linked to various disorders.

Neurodegenerative diseases are often accompanied by neuroinflammation and impairment of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) mediated by activated glial cells through their release of proinflammatory molecules. To study the effects of glial cells on mouse brain endothelial cells (mBECs), we developed an in vitro BBB model with inflammation by preactivating mixed glial cells (MGCs) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) before co-culturing with mBECs to study the influence of molecules released by activated MGCs. The response of the mBECs to activated MGCs was compared to direct stimulation with LPS.
