Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder with an estimated prevalence of 5-7 people in 100,000. Clinically characterized by impairments in gait, balance, and eye movements, as well as aggregated Tau pathology, PSP leads to death in approximately 5-8 years. Methods: The Health ABC study was queried to identify 296 participants with data on both olfaction (measured using the 12-item Brief Smell Identification Test) and balance-related function (measured using the Romberg test). The relationship between olfaction and balance was investigated using multivariable logistic regression.
The diversity of visual input processed by the mammalian visual system requires the generation of many distinct retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types, each tuned to a particular feature. The molecular code needed to generate this cell-type diversity is poorly understood.
